LSU football requests NCAA waiver to allow Garrett Nussmeier to retain redshirt in Texas Bowl

LSU football is hoping to play  freshman quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in the Texas Bowl against Kansas State while still retaining his redshirt status, interim coach Brad Davis said Tuesday.

But if things go awry, the Tigers (6-6) are also preparing contingency plans ahead of the Jan. 4 bowl game (8 p.m., ESPN) against the Wildcats (7-5).

"We do have a contingency (if we can't keep Nussmeier's redshirt), we are being very intentional about how we rep our team," Davis said. "We will be able to execute the offense."

LSU has submitted a waiver to the NCAA to request Nussmeier keep his redshirt status, a team spokesperson told The Daily Advertiser on Tuesday. It's unclear whether such waivers have ever been granted by the NCAA.

Nussmeier has appeared in four games this season, which is the maximum allowed in a season while still retaining redshirt status. LSU announced last month that Nussmeier would not play for the remainder of the season in order to retain that status, but plans changed after sophomore quarterback Max Johnson entered the transfer portal on Dec. 7.

Nussmeier is the Tigers' only scholarship quarterback remaining on the bowl game roster. Walk-ons Tavion Faulk and Matt O'Dowd are the other options at quarterback.

Davis said the NCAA has notified LSU of when its decision on Nussmeier's redshirt status will be rendered but declined to reveal the date. Monday was the Tigers' first practice of the bowl season.

Nussmeier has completed 50.9% of his passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns in four games against McNeese State, Central Michigan, Ole Miss and Arkansas. Against the Razorbacks, he saw extended playing time, attempting 31 passes and throwing two interceptions.

I don't believe that the hardship waiver will be granted. The "hardship" was created b/c our starting QB decided to enter the portal. Not a compelling story in my view.  But I really don't know what the standard for granted the waiver is.  We'll have to wait and see.

Back in the day, before the portal, players could not easily up and leave a university, so they didn't.  They had to sit out a year, unless they had graduated like Burrow.

If you reasonably managed your roster, you should not run out of QB's.

NCAA decided to make one transfer easy to do, now many more players transfer.  The NCAA created the problem, they should realize the problem they have created and grant the waiver.

Longer term, they need to evaluate whether some timing restrictions should be placed on when you can transfer.  Maybe have a month after the bowl games, and month after spring practice and any time during fall camp.  Once the season starts, you are on the team until the bowl games are over.

LSU had some concerns on the defensive side of the ball once again in Saturday’s 34-17 win over UCLA, but it was another banner day for the passing offense.

Garrett Nussmeier has been off to a red-hot start so far in his first season as the Tigers’ starter, pacing the SEC in both completions (113) and passing touchdowns (13). His completion mark also leads the nation, while he ranks second in passing touchdowns.

After completing 32 of 44 passes for 353 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers in Week 4, Nussmeier’s been named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week.

Nussmeier’s 32 completions were a career-best and the third-most in a single game in LSU program history.

Nussmeier is impressing so far in replacement of a Heisman-winner in Jayden Daniels, and he could be making a strong case to be a first-round pick despite only starting one season.
