Random stuff I like

I'm not as into music as most who post in this topic, but I listen at night, cruise around youtube and listen to all kinds of stuff, rock, country, pop, pop opera, broadway, but not much into heavy metal or grunge.

I came across this tonight, and I've heard it on the radio for year, but I really liked this stripped down version.  Pretty good lyrics.

I'm not a huge classic rock fan.  Songs that I like, I can listen to them 10 times in a row and enjoy it just as much, marvel at the singers voice each time.  Generally classic rock does not do that for me.  But, I was cruising around youtube and hit this old Stones song, and I really liked it.  The black lady who sings, the comments say she is Lisa Fischer, she really adds a lot to the song in her spots, she hits some amazing notes.  I read Keith Richards wrote the song in 1969, in 20 minutes.  They talk about war, murder, clearly this is around the height of the Vietnam war and race riots in major US cities.  This looks like a good performance.

Jim Croce night.

This guy spent years singing in bars across the US, writing his songs.  When he got discovered, he had number one hit after number one hit and became a major star overnight.  He was red hot for two or three years, then he died in a plane crash in '73.  His lyrics were phenomenal.  I used to complain to my kids about how rap music lyrics were horrible.  I was spoiled by Jim Croce.  You've probably heard parts of songs, but listen to the lyrics, very meaningful.

I'll have to say I love you in a song

tomorrow's gonna be a brighter day

His son AJ Croce, much like his Dad.

Jim died after doing a concert up in NW State University, a good friend of mine went to that concert. He woke up the next morning, with his roommate telling him, Croce had died. My friend rode out to the crash site, saw the wreckage.

Jim only had one #1 hit during his lifetime, Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. Everything else was after his death. Jim’s first album was with his wife, I use to have that album.

fun fact about that show.

the original show there was cancelled (don't remember the reason), but Jim swore he'd reschedule and make it happen.
In the time between cancellation and this show, he broke through and was now a much bigger name.
Jim kept his word, and performed that show at the original agreed upon price even though he could easily have either cancelled or demanded more.

Somewhat the same thing happened at LSU with Lee Greenwood.

AJ will be playing in Woodstock, Ga Saturday night, looks like I’m heading there soon from BTR.

Kristofferson was a great song writer, but not a great singer.  People liked his singing because he was so sincere.  It was like he had lived those lyrics.  I liked the song a little back in the day, but I came across this duet with Johnny Cash, who could sing.  It's the best version I have heard.

One of the greatest guitar songs ever played. I have a Gibson almost exactly like the one he is playing there. It was my grandfathers so I'd have to say its ~1967 model. The one I have is in much worse shape than AJ's because it spent its whole life in pool halls and bar rooms but man does it ever sound amazing. I had a guy offer to trade me for a brand new Martin a few years ago and I told him no way in hell.

So I've found my opinion to be unpopular, but I much prefer Kris' version of "Bobby Magee" over Janis Joplin's.

I saw Janis perform at some of the clubs in SW Louisiana in the mid 60s.  I don't think I ever saw her perform sober.

I like the "got talent" shows, and here are a few underdogs who did well.  Kevin Skinner won his season, put out an album, then fell on hard times and has not been heard from in a decade.  Tate Stevens won his season, cut an album, made some money, seems comfortable now.

Laudua won his season.  Last I heard, Landau is making a living as a singer so he did well.

Linda Ronstadt

She was the dominant female performer in the 1970’s, and she enjoyed a 50 year career.  She is the most versatile performer that I know of, and everything she attempted, she was outstanding.  Enjoy, and don’t miss the last one, a Grammy winner.

She earned 11 Grammy’s, 2 academy of country music awards, an American Latin Music Association award, and nominations for a Tony and Golden Globe.  She earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, she’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and she is a Kennedy Center Honoree.

Ronstadt sings traditional US hits from the 1940’s.  She asked female singers from that time to coach her and said the techniques were some of the most challenging to learn.

Mexican Songs, 1987, Linda wanted to return to her roots, she began singing with her family in Arizona.

Duet, Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt, 1990 I don’t know much, won Grammy for best pop duet or group.

Aaron Neville is Catholic, with a devotion to St. Jude, to whom he has credited his success and survival. He wears a St. Jude Medal as a left earring.

I just happened across this one.  Tom Jones is 84, this was posted a year ago, could have happened a year before that.  Not his best vocal, but you can see he is feeling the song, and he makes you feel it too.  The crowd is silent and by the end, the judges are moved as Tom explains why he likes the song.
