LSU Transfer Portal 2022

Burrow was a graduate transfer and did not come through the portal.

The SEC network has a funny Dr. Pepper commercial dealing with the portal.  A big burly LB goes into the portal and the coaches look sad.  Then poof, a scrawny kid pops in and asks if anyone needs a punter.  They look dismayed, then say "nah, we good...".   Made me laugh.

Lots of SEC West starting QBs in the portal Zach Calzada, Bo Nix, Max Johnson and Myles Brennan.  We are going to have to adjust to the portal.  I'm seeing some chatter on Twitter re Bo Nix to LSU.  Don't see that happening. He's been serviceable and has had some bright moments. Reminds me of Bo Wallace honestly. EDIT: Just looked at the stats, Wallace has the better stat line but both were up and down.

I laughed earlier because I couldn't help but imagine Nootch's reaction

Regarding Trey Palmer, I don't get it.  He was playing and playing well.  He should be looking at increased playing time next year, he just needs to work hard and earn it.

It's the same deal he is going to get at any other major program.  Unless he thinks LSU just has too many talented receivers, and that alone will limit his playing time.

We did recruit some very good receivers last year, to go along with Boutte who should claim a spot.

An important rule change on the transfer portal goes into effect in 2022.

Quote
  • In 2022 and beyond, the deadline to transfer to a new school will be May 1st for fall and winter sports and July 1st for spring sports if athletes want to compete in the next season. However, because the May 1st deadline is coming up soon, this year, the deadline will July 1st for all sports during the 2021-2022 cycle.
  • Exceptions would be made for a head coach leaving or a scholarship being canceled.
  • Athletes who are transferring to a new school must meet certain academic requirements, including being academically eligible.
  • Tampering, or the lack of tampering, is a listed point. Both the coach of the new school and the transferring player must certify that no tampering took place during the process. This is sure to be a point of contention as the ruling moves forward.
  • If student-athletes don’t meet or follow the requirements to qualify for a one-time transfer without sitting out, they can still transfer under the old rulings.

It looks like those rules were put into effect in April 2021, so the deadline for the portal this past season was really July 1st. Because Orgeron and LSU parted ways, it opened the exception up for Eli Ricks and others to enter the portal.

The interesting thing to watch will be the tampering certification. In the case of Ricks does Orgeron certify that no tampering took place or does Kelly?  Seems to me they should bump that up to the AD level.

The reason I ask this about Ricks is because there was chatter when he 1st entered that Ohio State had NIL sponsorships already lined up for him, then they backed off suddenly. That seemed like an eyebrow raising event (at least to me).

Deep snapper Slade Roy commits to LSU

By Mike Scarborough
December 30, 2021

Former East Carolina deep snapper Slade Roy has announced on Twitter that he's committed to LSU.  He entered the transfer portal after one season at ECU.

The 6-foot-3, 216-pound specialist will have three years of playing elibility.  He prepped at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Roy tells TigerBait.com that he was recruited to LSU by special teams coach Brian Polian and Brian Kelly.  “When they offered it was a no-brainer”.

He arrives on campus January 15.

“My parents are excited,” he added.
