LSU Lands Commitment From 2022 Top-50  Player Tyrell Ward

Ward one of the top forwards in 2022 class, Matt McMahon continues phenomenal job of putting roster together

Coach Matt McMahon continues to put in astonishingly great work on the recruiting trail, landing another huge commitment from 2022 forward Tyrell Ward on Saturday.

Ward, a top-50 player in the class on multiple recruiting outlets, is the second player to commit to the Tigers this week out of the 2022 class, joining 6-foot-10 forward Jalen Reed and center Corneilous Williams as the third freshman of the class. The addition of Ward to the class now gives the Tigers 10 total players for the 2022 roster, leaving three left for McMahon to fill.

A versatile offensive player with great touch and the ability to create for other, Williams is an absolute menace at the rim as he can finish through contact and can guard multiple positions with his 6-foot-7 length.

“It is another special day in Baton Rouge as we welcome Tyrell Ward to the LSU family,” said Coach McMahon. “Tyrell is a very skilled guard at 6-7 who can score the ball at all three levels. We love his three-point shooting combined with unique ability to finish at the rim in a variety of ways. Tyrell has a great basketball IQ and is passionate about becoming the best player he can be. We can’t wait to coach him at LSU.”

McMahon has also brought in Murray State transfers Justice Hill and Trae Hannibal as well as Mississippi State's Derek Fountain, NC State’s Cam Hayes and Northwestern State’s Kendal Coleman. The Tigers have also talked Mwani Wilkinson and Justice Williams to return to the program after losing 11 commits since the coaching change.

Guard Adam Miller, who is currently in the transfer portal, also released his top two in the last day and has LSU and TCU as the final schools he's considering.

“We're gonna invest a lot of time with our players. I want people who want to be here, want people who want to be a part of something special because that's what we're gonna build here," McMahon said at his introductory press conference. "My favorite part of the job is not only seeing the best player they can be but the best man they can be. It's my responsibility to grow leaders here at LSU and that's what we're gonna work to do."

7-foot four-star center Shawn Phillips commits to LSU

Four-star center Shawn Phillips out of Glendale (Ariz). Dream City Christian has committed to LSU, he tells On3.

Standing at 7-feet tall and weighing in at 255 pounds, they don’t call Phillips “Baby Shaq” for nothing. In a lot of ways, Phillips is a similar player to the legendary LSU alum, Shaquille O’Neal. Besides the comparable measurables and physical attributes, Phillips is also an old-school type of big man. He uses his size to overpower defenders while remaining mobile and light on his feet. He’s gotten in much better shape towards the latter half of his high school career and runs the floor well for a player of his size. Phillips can protect the rim, clean up the glass, and will fight on the low block. He can rebound out at a high level, and his improving jump shot can expect to about 15 feet.

Phillips chose LSU over a final group of Kansas State, Georgetown, Miami, and the Overtime Elite league. Less than a month ago, the big man decommitted from NC State.

The On3 Consensus – a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies – ranks Phillips as the No. 123 overall prospect in the country, and the No. 19 ranked center. On3’s evaluators are even higher on Phillips, ranking him the No. 101 overall prospect in the class.

Phillips talks commitment to LSU

Once Phillips reopened his recruitment last month, LSU was one of the first schools to jump on him. He set up official visits with Kansas State, your very own Tigers, and Georgetown. K-State received the first visit. After his visit to LSU, Phillips canceled his visit to the Hoyas, knowing he’d found his home in Baton Rouge.

“LSU just gave me that feeling,” Phillips said to On3. “The coaching staff was cool, and people on campus were cool. It was just a vibe and they made me believe in them to get me better every day.”

Phillips joins a loaded group down in Louisiana, formed by newly-hired head coach Matt McMahon and his coaching staff. The Tigers have now landed a ten-man recruiting class. Headed to Baton Rouge from the high school ranks is four-star PF Jalen Reed, four-star SF Tyrell Ward, and three-star PF Corneilous Williams. Arriving via the transfer portal is a trio from Murray State; Justice Hill, Trae Hannibal, and KJ Williams, to go along with Cam Hayes from NC State, Derek Fountainfrom Mississippi State, and Kendal Coleman from Northwestern State.

The Tigers will also return Adam Miller, Justice Williams, and Mwani Wilkinson.
