BATON ROUGE, La. – Former LSU shortstop Josh Smith has been promoted to the Texas Rangers active roster, and he will join the club in Arlington, Texas, Monday night for its game versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

Smith is the 82nd Major Leaguer in the illustrious history of LSU Baseball. He was the second-round selection of the New York Yankees in the 2019 MLB Draft and was traded last July from the Yankees to the Rangers.

Smith is the third former LSU player to reach the big leagues in 2022, joining infielder Kramer Robertson of the St. Louis Cardinals and catcher Michael Papierski of the San Francisco Giants.

He is rated among the top 10 of all Rangers prospects, and he made his debut at the Triple-A level this season, hitting .273 in 191 plate appearances for the Round Rock (Texas) Express.

Originally drafted as a shortstop, Smith has split time between shortstop, third base and center field this season in Triple-A.

Smith, a Baton Rouge native, played at LSU from 2017-19, and he was the Tigers’ starting shortstop in 2019 after missing most of the 2018 season with a stress reaction in his vertebrae. He was the starting third baseman for LSU’s 2017 College World Series runners-up team, earning Freshman All-America and Freshman All-SEC recognition.

Texas Rangers put Brad Miller on IL; prospect Josh Smith tallies 3 hits in MLB debut

ESPN News Services6:12 PM ET2 Minute Read

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers prospect Josh Smith dazzled in his major league debut, accounting for three hits in Monday's 9-5 winover the Tampa Bay Rays.

He is the sixth Texas player with three hits in his MLB debut and the first since Nomar Mazara in 2016.

Smith, who played Monday's game at third base, was called up from Triple-A Round Rock after versatile infielder/outfielder Brad Miller was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hip impingement.

Texas acquired Smith from the Yankees in the six-player trade last July that sent slugger Joey Gallo to New York. Smith was a second-round pick by the Yankees out of LSU in the 2019 amateur draft, and went into this season rated as one of the top 10 prospects for the Rangers.

Smith hit .273 with four homers, eight doubles, two triples and 29 RBIs in 40 games at Round Rock. He has started 17 games at third base, 14 at shortstop and nine at center field.
