Buying MORE Dirt

A girl I dated in HS's grandfather raised cattle and made his own hey.  He was free labor for 2 years LOL.  I showed up the first time in short pants and short sleeves and recall him laughing under his breath when I showed up. NEVER made that mistake again. Fun times.

My son in law in Victoria keeps a Taurus Judge pistol snub nose around, shoots .45 long colt ammo (costs a fortune) and .410 short version shotgun shells.  He likes the .410 for snakes.  This takes the 2 1/2" shells for the .410.

I ain't killing these gopher killers!

Plus it gives the cats something to target

Dear God there's no better smell

fully agree! i miss it.

when my papa would cut and bale alfalfa, i would sit at the edge of the field and just relax from the smell. that's true aroma therapy.

one summer, my father decided that on top of all the other things i did to earn my keep, i was to drive the hay truck so he didn't have to spare any of the guys loading. the clutch was really sticky, and i weighed all of 90 pounds, and struggled with it. i kept hearing the guys yell and a wee bit of cursing. turned out i kept throwing them off the back of the truck.

my dad fired me. apparently, they threatened to quit, and it was them, or me. so... me.

I haven't talked to the friend that rents mom's pasture land, which includes a hay field, but from what i have seen from here, the conditions are MUCH better than last year. last year i traded our portion of what little hay he got from it for some dirt work, because the drought had him hurting for hay for his cattle. this year should be much better from what I can tell. having a little bit of hay income into the trust will be nice.

some pretty hay ya got there. do you sell it it local ranchers? i know a guy down your way starting a cattle operation.

And to the neighbor that drove by today and offered cash for a couple bales lol.

He has 15 acres of hay and no time to cut and bale his, so he needed a couple bales. I'm like, just let your cows and horses out lol

I am not surprised. Last year was slim pickins. My friends in oklahoma are layin' in what they can for winter, and hope they can get more, and better quality, than last year.

So the locals (messicans) always say if you kill a rattlesnake, hang out on the fence and it'll rain.

Picture above shows I complied, and here's my radar at about midnight. Helluva storm blew through about 1...

Guess the non-messican version of that is wash your car??

Well by Thursday we may find out if it will rain for the next 40 days:

Quote
Today, June 8th, is St. Medard’s Day, or pronounced in Cajun French “Sam-e-da“. Never heard of it? Well, study up, because it is supposed to let us know whether it’s going to be raining around here for a while.
St Medard lived in 5th & 6th Century France and is the patron saint of weather and rain.
According to www.saints.sqpn.com, “Legend says that when he was a child, Medard was once sheltered from the rain by a hovering eagle. This is his most common depiction in art, and led to his patronage of good weather, against bad weather, for people who work the fields, etc.
Legend has it that if it rains on his feast day, today, the next 40 days will be wet; if the weather is good today, the next 40 will be fine as well

Wow, I have not heard of "sam e da" in 40 or 50 years!  My mother used to mention it once a year when I was a kid.  Nice memory!  I didn't know the origin, thanks Hatch!

My Mom was real old school, and living in the country near Cankton, we had some real old school remedies.  I had some warts on my leg as a child and Mom went looking for a "traiteur" to take them off.  Luckily she could not find a traiteur in the neighborhood.  I had them removed by a dermatologist.

Then there was the time I stepped on a rusty nail, on the ball of my foot.  Someone told her to keep it moist with a piece of bacon, and the salt in the bacon would prevent infection.  So, every morning, she got the scissors and cut 1/3 of a slice of bacon, put in on the little hole in the skin, wrapped it with a strip from an old sheet she cut up, then put a sock on it.  I walked around with that strip of bacon on my foot all day (it was summer so no shoes).  All was good, I got a fresh strip of bacon every day, and it did heal up!
