They were the grunge group from Seattle scene that was supposed to break through to the main stream, but their lead singer, Andrew Wood, died of an overdose in 1990. Lots of the grunge sounds we knew and loved were directly inspired by Wood. "Say Hello to Heaven" by Temple of the Dog "Would" by Alice in Chains "Far Behind" by Candlebox were all written in his memory. the entire Temple of Dog album was also written, recorded, and released as a tribute to Wood. Chris Cornell was a former roommate of his. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament (of Pear Jam fame) were in Mother Love Bone with him. Temple of the Dog got their band name from the first verse of this song:
