Help Mac Pack!

Good article on the end of Cholly Mac's tenure at LSU.  Not saying it wasn't time for him to go but we really didn't get the "right" coach in place until 2000 when we hired Saban.  TN still hasn't gotten "the coach" after firing Fat Phil Fulmer years ago. Interesting that if we had beaten Florida State in 1979, there is a good chance Bobby Bowden would have taken the job.

Had LSU won that game, Bowden likely decides that he cannot win it all at Florida St and takes the LSU offer on the table. Instead, the win in Tiger Stadium convinced him that FSU really could win anywhere against anyone. LSU dominated the first half, outrushing FSU 139-23, but went into the break down by a point.

I was convinced Mac had to go, like I was convinced that Miles had to go.  Mac had a problem at QB, he had trouble signing the great one after Bert Jones.  What I heard at the time was that great high school prospects didn't want to go to LSU because Mac platooned his QB's, and the great Bert Jones didn't get most of the snaps until his Sr. year.  People thought Jones should have been "the guy" at least in his Jr. year, but he shared time with a much less talented QB (Lyons).  Mac had some bad luck in there also, Trey Prather was killed in Vietnam, and Mike Miley was killed in a car wreck, two touted QB's.

Now come on Hatch, Arnsbarger was a good coach, too bad he just stayed here 4 years.  And we don't know how Bo Rein would have done, but we were positive regarding his hire, he ran a good offense as I recall.  Stovall stepped in when Rein died, and did a good job for a couple of years, but when Mac Brown left his offensive staff, they had two bad years that cost Jerry the job.  I will not speak of the '90's, too painful.

Was here 3 years 1984-1986. Never won a bowl game. I do consider him a good coach though. He wasn't the answer at the time as he moved on.  If he had decided to stay, who knows.
