LSUDad
Kevin Mawae, it’s his Birthday. “The Knock!” “The Ring!” Hall of Fame Speech! Buddy King was the OL Coach at LSU when Kevin was there, but his last year, he had one of the better coaches in the game, Larry Zierlein. During most of those years, I had an open pass to practice. A field pass for home games, or sitting with the coaches families in the stadium. At practice, Kevin and Gabe Northern would jaw back and forth. Kevin is now at Arizona St. united with Herm Edwards. Former LSU DC Phil Bennett was on that staff before retiring. I remember when the Jets made Kevin Mawae, the former Seattle Seahawk, the highest-paid center in the National Football League. The 6-foot-4-inch, 305-pound Mawae signed a five-year, $17 million contract that included a $5 million signing bonus. One more Tiger I want to see in the Hall, Alan Faneca. On March 1, 2008, the New York Jets signed Faneca to a five-year, $40 million contract, with $21 million in guarantees. The contract at that time, made Faneca the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

A finalist five times before, Faneca finally punched his ticket to Canton on his sixth try when he was selected as a member of the Class of 2021 on Saturday night. Faneca also played two seasons for the New York Jets and one with the Arizona Cardinals. He was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection during his 13-year NFL career. The Class of 2021 will be enshrined during induction ceremonies scheduled for Aug. 5-9 in Canton, Ohio. The 2020 class and a special centennial class also will be enshrined after the coronavirus pandemic forced postponement of those ceremonies last summer. That group includes three Steelers: Troy Polamalu, Bill Cowher and Donnie Shell.
