so there are still 2 SEC games to be finalized for the weekend, but neither will affect our standings this week.

We are currently sitting in 11th place with 3 teams all tied for 12th behind us.

Mizzou (playing right now) can take over 12th to themselves with a win and move to 1 game back of us.
Alabama (playing against Mizzou right now) has a 3.5 game lead over us
KY and UGA have 3 game leads.

Auburn is heating up a little bit, so they will not be a pushover next weekend.  but we absolutely MUST take the series.
We're currently up 2 games on them in standings, so dropping the series would put us in a tie (with them having tie breaker).

but more importantly:

i think we need a minimum of 5 SEC wins down the stretch to squeeze into a regional.

***4 wins gets us to 13  - really close to no chance we get a bid with 13. I don’t care how good our RPI is, the chance of us getting a bid at 13-17 is less than 10%

5 makes things interesting.  at 14-16 we’re 50/50 at getting in.  Our SoS and RPI is high enough to push in as one of the last bubble teams.  Probably get a CRAPTASTIC draw and have to travel to Cambodia to play the ‘27 Yankees, but we likely get in.

6 wins and finish at 15-15???
Ruston, here we come. And we win that regional! and somehow found a way to end up in a damn Super this year.

***NOTE: regular season record will be moot if we win whole thing in Hoover to take SEC auto bid.

That's what happens when you sneak in.  Obviously, our biggest issue in my view if we make a regional is pitching.  At a minimum you have to win three games in a row to advance. Lose one along the way and there is more.  We are barely suited to win 3 games.  We have 2 starters who have to go deep to give us a chance to win and a third game is Johnny Wholestaff and you just never can predict what shows up to pitch.  Beyond that  ....  The good news for this season is that we have gotten some young pitchers some good experience.

SIDE NOTE:  We would be in much better shape if Hill and Beck would have been healthy the entire season.

some combination of Hilliard, Hellmers, Edwards can get us through a game 3.

problem is the committee will not gift us a trip to Ruston.
they sending us to either Austin or Fort Worth.

John Cohen is chair of committee this year.
we ain’t getting any favors.

So, we have officially clinched a spot in Hoover
But let's look bigger picture ... REGIONALS

IMO, seven SEC teams are locks to get into a regional.

  • Tennessee
  • Vanderbilt
  • Florida
  • So. Carolina
  • Arkansas
  • Ole Miss
  • Miss St.

I'm thinking the absolute MOST the conference gets in is 9, but most likely will be only 8.
there are 4 teams battling for that last spot (or 2)

  • Alabama         12-14    (vs. Miss St.)
  • Kentucky        11-16    (@ Vanderbilt)
  • Georgia           12-15    (vs. Ole Miss)
  • LSU                   11-16    (@ A&M)

First, the good news
we have series wins vs 2 of the 3 teams we're battling
we, by far, have the easier weekend ahead of us

Now the bad news
we have to sweep. period.
there is roughly ZERO chances in deepest darkest pits of hell that we get in with only 12 conference wins.
13 wins, and there is a chance.
14? i think we're in

It will help LSU if Bama loses its series with Moo State this weekend.  Our RPI is 18, up from 20. RPI doesn't mean much if you don't win games though.  Think the SEC is strong this year? 8 teams in the SEC have an RPI of 20 or lower.

i think we have to finish with more wins than them. to jump them.

which basically means we have to be 2 better than them this weekend.
