After allegations that former Vanderbilt athletic director Malcolm Turner misused funds with unnecessary spending, he was forced to resign in February of 2020 after just one month of work. However, new 2020 tax records acquired by The Tennessean show that he still made $1.6 million.

The report also indicates that Vanderbilt paid Malcolm Turner nearly $2.2 million in 2019.

Because Vanderbilt is the only private university in the SEC, it is not required to disclose employee salaries in the same way their rivals must. However, they still must file tax documents within 18 months of the calendar year, allowing news outlets to acquire a glimpse at the numbers.

The breakdown of Turner’s salary includes $147,832 in base pay, $7,463 in retirement and $4,877 in nontaxable benefits. The other $1,512,470 in payments is reported under “other reportable compensation.”

Other numbers shown in the tax document include interim athletic director Candice Lee, who took over after the resignation. She became the first Black female athletic director in SEC history, making $477,634 in base pay, $90,000 in bonuses and $719,936 in reportable compensation.

More details revealed at Vanderbilt

In addition to some of the notable members of the athletic department, Vanderbilt is required to disclose the five highest-paid employees each year in the tax return. The coaches who filled out the list include former football coach Derek Mason, men’s basketball coach Jerry Stackhouse and baseball coach Tim Corbin.

Before eventually parting ways with the program, leading the school to hire new coach Clark Lea ahead of the 2021 season, Derek Mason made $3.1 million in base pay and bonuses. That number came down from $4.3 million in 2019.

Jerry Stackhouse also earned $3.1 million after earning $2.2 million in 2019. Meanwhile, Tim Corbin’s total compensation reached over $1.6 million, slightly down from the $1.7 million he made the previous year.
