CHARLES BARBRE OBITUARY

Charles Stephen Barbre, 75, a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, passed away September 16, 2022 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty-seven years, Betty Bellard Barbre; children Mark Barbre with wife Nikki and Karen Barbre Ullo with husband Michael, all of Baton Rouge; grandchildren Michael Arthur Ullo, Jr., Blaise Ullo, Benjamin Barbre, and Anthony Barbre; and siblings Mary Ann Clark of Ellicott City, MD; Bobby Barbre of Soddy Daisy, TN; and James Barbre of Tucson, AZ. Born February 14, 1947, Charles was a graduate of Catholic High School ('65) and LSU ('72). He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. Known as "The Rooster," he spent much of his career in local sports broadcasting on both radio and television, including as the host of Sports Talk TV. He was the first person to televise local broadcasts of High School Football Games of the Week, LSU baseball, LSU women's sports, and high school baseball and basketball. He was also the author of LSU: A Legacy of Leaders. Always active in his community, he was the founder and first president of the South River Oaks Civic Association and a two-term president of the Greater Baton Rouge Federation of Civic Associations. He also served at the recovery of the World Trade Center after 9/11. A lifelong Catholic, Charles cherished a particular devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Holy Rosary, and produced a video about praying the rosary with his daughter Karen. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council at St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church, who voted him Man of the Year in 2020. He was very active in local pro-life activities, and spent many years praying for the lives of the unborn. A wake will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 9:30am-11:00am at St. Jean Vianney Church, with rosary at 11:00am and a funeral Mass at 11:30am. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Mark Barbre, Michael Ullo, Bobby Barbre, BJ Barbre, Paul Barbre, and Jason Jacob. Honorary pallbearer will be Kirk Bellard.
