LSU baseball head coach Jay Johnson has reportedly made an important hire. The Tigers are bringing in Terry Rooney as Director of Recruiting and Program Development, according to Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.

Rooney is joining the LSU program after spending last season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Purdue. He was also the pitching coach for the Boilermakers in 2023.

Rooney was previously the head coach at UCF. This marks the second time in his career that Rooney has been on staff at LSU.

A former LSU assistant coach under Paul Mainieri is apparently back with the program under Jay Johnson.

Terry Rooney, who spent the past two seasons as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Purdue, has been hired as LSU’s director of recruiting and player development, according to D1Baseball.com.

Rooney replaces Josh Simpson, who left LSU to join former Tigers’ pitching coach Wes Johnson at Georgia, where he is now head coach. Simpson, who was LSU’s director of operations, will be Georgia’s recruiting coordinator.

Rooney, 49, was pitching coach at Notre Dame under Mainieri from 2004-06, then followed him to LSU in 2007. Rooney spent two seasons at LSU, helping the program land the nation’s No. 1-ranked recruiting class and reach the 2008 College World Series before leaving to become head coach at UCF in 2009.

Rooney went 261-210 at UCF, leaving in 2016 before going to Alabama for one season, which included a stint as interim head coach in 2017.

Rooney then moved on to the University of Houston, where he was pitching coach from 2018-21, before taking the job at Purdue. His previous coaching stops took him to George Washington, James Madison, Old Dominion and Stetson.
