Devin White wins Corbett Award

Former LSU linebacker Devin White has been named the 2019 Male Corbett Award winner.

The award is given annually by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Committee to the top amateur student-athlete in the state.

LSU gymnast Sarah Finnegan took home the 2019 Female Corbett Award.

Below is more on White’s honor provided by LSU Sports Information with a look at Finnegan’s career.

White along with Finnegan, gymnastics co-head coach D-D Breaux and former LSU football player Billy Truax will be presented on Saturday, August 10, as part of the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Banquet at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Corbett Awards are presented annually to the top male and female amateur athletes in the state of Louisiana. A total of 26 individuals, including this year’s Hall of Fame class, and two teams will be honored at this year’s banquet. All of the honorees are selected by the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

White was selected fifth overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2019 NFL Draft. His selection marked the highest drafted linebacker in LSU history and the first Tiger selected in the first round since 1989 when Eric was picked No. 10 overall.

One of the best players in school history, White was the first LSU player to win the Butkus Award, which is given to the top linebacker in college football. He totaled 286 tackles in his three seasons in Baton Rouge and was selected as the team MVP in both 2017 and 2018.

White earned consensus All-America status in 2018 after earning first team All-America honors from Walter Camp, Associated Press, Sporting News and American Football Coaches Association.

Forty-one LSU student-athletes have been honored by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Committee with the Corbett Award with the addition of White and Finnegan in 2019. White joins LSU greats Aaron Nola, Sam BurnsLeonard FournettePatrick Peterson, Seimone Augustus, Shaquille O'NealTodd Walker, Chris Jackson, and Pete Maravich as previous winners of the award.

Finnegan won the SEC all-around title and was named the Central Region Gymnast of the Year in both 2018 and 2019. She was honored with the AAI Award, which goes to the top senior gymnast in the nation and considered the sport’s Heisman Trophy.

The Lee’s Summit, Missouri, native rewrote the LSU history books in her four years in Baton Rouge with 95 individual wins in 212 routines competed in that span. Finnegan became the first LSU gymnast in school history to win an NCAA championship on bars when she did it in 2017.

Finnegan finished her career as a 23-time All-American to tie for the most in school history. One of the best beam workers ever at LSU, Finnegan set the career record for titles on the event with 27.

A five-time SEC champion, Finnegan won three tiles at the league meet earlier this year. She finished her career tied for the most in school history. Finnegan earned six perfect scores in her career – two on bars, beam and floor. She is the second gymnast in school history to earn a perfect score on three events.

Finnegan save her best performances for 2019 as a dominating force in the all-around all year. Finnegan competed all four events in 16 of 17 meets and earned 14 wins to shatter a new school record. She also set the LSU single-season record for beam titles with 11.

One of the most remarkable records of her illustrious career is the 49 individual titles in 2019. The original record was set by Sandra Smith in 1980 and tied in 2010 by Susan Jackson. No other LSU gymnast since Jackson has won more than 30 titles in a season.
