4-star Texas defensive end gives LSU first 2021 commitment

Andrew Olson | 3 hours ago

LSU is on the board for the class of 2021.

Hutto (Texas) DE Landyn Watson announced Monday night that he has committed to the Tigers. Listed at 6-3, 240 pounds, Watson is a 4-star recruit on the 247Sports Composite, rated the No. 11 weak-side defensive end, No. 33 Texas product and No. 176 prospect overall nationally for the 2021 class. He already has 15 scholarship offers, including Notre Dame, Michigan State, TCU and Vanderbilt in addition to Louisiana State.

BOOM! 2021 Stud Landyn Watson Commits

LSU nabs its first recruit for the class of 2021 out of Texas.

By Corey Poche  Jul 29, 2019, 7:41pm CDT

EArn26GUEAAViKC.0.jpg@jtschoenemann

It’s one thing to have defensive line momentum going for one class. It’s another for that to carry into another, but that is what appears to be happening as four-star defensive end/rush linebacker Landyn Watson became the first member of LSU’s 2021 class.

Watson took a visit to Baton Rouge today, and it was enough for him to commit over the likes of Notre Dame, Baylor, TCU, Washington and Oklahoma State. The Hutto, Texas, recruit is right out of the Longhorns backyard (or front yard depending on how you look at it geographically), something that may come back to bite them in the long run.

Listed 6-3 and 240 pounds, Watson comes off as a slim 240 based on the video, but that could benefit LSU in sculpting that frame into what they want compared to adding on weight like others who have arrived in Baton Rouge. The one thing that jumps out is his speed, along with his burst off the snap, which is more apparent on inside rushes compared to coming off the edge. While the ability is definitely there, you can also see his youth and rawness even in the highlights. If Watson can learn to use his hands more to disengage from his blockers instead of running right into their body, he can spend even more time in the backfield than he already does.

Not to come out and say he will make the same jump, but K’Lavon Chaisson, another edge rusher out of Texas, was ranked in the 200s after his junior season, where Watson is ranked at 190 coming into his junior year.

Just for reference: Chaisson’s SENIOR film:

Punter Peyton Todd of West Monroe is a LSU commitment

By Mike Scarborough
August 1, 2019

LSU's special teams has been very special over the years and it went next level with the addition of coach Greg McMahon.

McMahon arrived on the LSU coaching staff and found specialists Cole Tracy and Avery Atkins so he has an eye for great talent.

After months of scouting and contact with Class of 2021 punter Peyton Todd‍, the LSU offer arrived and the commitment was accepted.

“I’ve been in contact with Coach Mac, the special teams coordinator, for a couple months now within legal contact periods of course and when Coach O called my head coach yesterday morning I had already had my mind made up,” Todd said.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Todd gives LSU their second commitment for the class of 2021.

“LSU is where I’ve wanted to be my entire life and I dont see any other school changing my mind so why not take it?,” Todd said. “I’m really blessed to be presented this opportunity and I’m gonna do my best to make the most of it!”

Teddy Rydquist | 2 hours ago

Running past the Ole Piss Rebels, 58-37, on Saturday, the No. 1 LSU Tigers made some noise on the recruiting trail on Sunday.

Initially receiving his offer on the first day of May, 2021 Booker T. Washington (Miami, Florida) three-star defensive tackle Anthony Hundley verbally pledged to the Tigers.

Hundley announced his decision on Twitter:

The No. 31 defensive tackle in the cycle and the No. 63 player in the talent-rich state of Florida according to 247Sports, Hundley also held reported Power Five offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Miami and Syracuse.

Becoming the third member of the Tigers’ 2021 class, he joins West Monroe, Louisiana punter Peyton Todd and Hutto, Texas four-star defensive end Landyn Watson.

The first prospect from Florida that Ed Orgeron and his staff have landed in the class, LSU currently has two commits from the Sunshine State in their 2020 haul.

Looking to remain unscathed, the Tigers (10-0) will host the Arkansas Razorbacks (2-8) on Saturday at 7:00PM ET on ESPN.

Nation's top 2021 QB prospect announces he'll be at LSU's regular-season finale vs. Texas A&M

Adam Spencer | 2 hours ago

LSU’s offense became more quarterback-friendly overnight when the Tigers hired offensive assistant Joe Brady away from the New Orleans Saints.

While it might be costly to retain Brady after this season, quarterback prospects around the country have noticed the LSU offense this season.

In fact, top 2021 QB prospect Caleb Williams will be in attendance at LSU’s regular-season finale against Texas A&M on Nov. 30, he announced via Twitter on Monday night:

I will be at the LSU game Nov 30th vs Texas A&M. #GeauxTigers

Williams is a 5-star prospect. The 247Sports composite rankings have him as the No. 16 overall player in the 2021 class, the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback prospect and the No. 1 overall recruit from the Washington D.C. area.

He’s considering Georgia, Oregon, Penn State and other colleges, as well, but LSU could certainly work its way into the mix.

Anthony Hundley Commits to LSU

LSU adds its third commit to the 2021 class

With the 2020 class coming down the homestretch and spots getting limited, the LSU staff did the next best thing: looked towards the future. The defensive line has been a focal point for the 2020 class, and it would appear 2021 is no different with Anthony Hundley joining Landyn Watson on the line. Hundley, once a Miami commit, left the Hurricanes class in August, taking an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge for the Northwestern State game.

At 6-3 and 275 pounds, Hundley is a strong presence on the line for Booker T. Washington, one of the premier schools in Miami, giving him a lot of solid experience at the high school level. However, highlights of Hundley are sparse for whatever reason. It’s hard to provide a true scouting report based off the limited film on Hudl, but you can see his ability to navigate through the line and make a play int he backfield.

It does seem a little odd of a take this early on, but I’ll err on the evaluations from Orgeron and Aranda on this one. The 2020 and 2021 defensive line classes for LSU could be monumental in building towards the future and creating that mayhem in the backfield we were accustomed to seeing.

Class of 2021 defensive end Landyn Watson‍ committed to LSU in July but he's now decided to pull back and reopen his recruiting process.

That was quick.  But those commitments that are over a year out are often rather soft and subject to change, especially out of state kids.

Many times kids want to take visits.  LSU will often tell them, take your visits, make sure. Then you get some kids, give you a verbal, then do a secret visit, or think no one will find out. One of the LSU Coaches called a kid, asked what he was doing. The kid gave a BS story. The staff knew where he was, they dropped him.

Character counts.  I once hired a person who I knew lied about their salary on job app.  I offered what I thought they were worth, and they took the offer.  I found out they lied during their work tenure with the company, no promotions and eventually they quit.  I never hired another person who I knew lied to me.  Lesson learned, it is just not worth it.  Character counts, and it starts at the top.

Deion Smith, the nation's No. 16 wide receiver, per 247Sports, announced Sunday evening that he was flipping his commitment from Mississippi State to LSU's 2021 recruiting class.

"I want to thank Coach Joe Moorhead and the entire Mississippi State Football Staff for giving me the opportunity to play for a great school and for all my fans that have supported me," Smith wrote. "After prayer and talks with my parents and my mentor, it is in my best interest to decommit from Mississippi State University & Commit to Louisiana State University."

Smith is the No. 2 overall recruit in Mississippi (wide receiver Isaiah Brevard is committed to Ole Piss), and he joins Florida defensive tackle Anthony Hundley (No. 36 DT) and West Monroe punter Peyton Todd as the third player to commit to LSU's 2021 class.

Smith first committed to Mississippi State on April 3, and he also holds offers from Auburn, Ole Piss and Tennessee.

LSU lands in Top 5 for 2021 five-star offensive tackle

ByBILLY EMBODY Dec 4, 6:17 PM

One of the top players in the country dropped his Top 5 schools as the regular season comes to a close for many high schools prospects. 2021 Ft. Worth (Tex.) All Saints offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer included LSU in his Top 5 along with Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Texas, who is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite.

The 6-6, 283-pound lineman ranks on the industry-generated 247Sports Composite as the No. 3 overall prospect in the country, No. 1 offensive tackle and No. 1 overall prospect in Texas. The five-star racked up plenty of offers from other programs including Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford and others.

LSU hosted Brockermeyer, the son of former Texas and NFL offensive lineman Blake Brockermeyer, who is a defensive analyst at SMU, for the Auburn game and he came away impressed with the trip. His brother and fellow 2021 LSU offensive line target James Brockermeyer also went with him on the trip to Baton Rouge.

"I had a blast at the game last night! The atmosphere was insane," Brockermeyer said at the time. "Offensive looked great! Offensive line was playing very well. Definitely one of top offenses in the country."

Brockermeyer is recovering from an injury that has kept him out his entire junior season, but recovery is going well after he had surgery over the summer.

“The injury is healing very well,” Brockermeyer told 247Sports earlier this season. “It’s such a long process, but I’m definitely getting stronger. I can feel my movement coming back and I’m excited to keep on rehabbing it and hopefully get back into the action soon.”

Here's a look at his 247Sports recruiting scouting report, which compares him to former Texas A&M standout and current Atlanta Falcons lineman Jake Matthews:

"Big-framed offensive tackle with outstanding football pedigree. Possesses requisite height and frame potential for elite tackle prospect. Plays with active feet and encouraging leg drive. Shows better than expected pad level and leverage relative to height and frame length. Plays with a high motor and displays block-finishing ability. Gets to second level well.

"Owns a very high ceiling as a pass-blocker and true left tackle potential. Occasionally plays with too much forward lean. Can get too far out over his feet. Hand placement consistency could use work. One of the top offensive tackles nationally in the 2021 class. Possesses early round NFL Draft potential."

Stick with Geaux247 for the latest on Brockermeyer's recruitment.

Garrett Nussmeier, son of former Alabama, Florida OC Doug Nussmeier, lands latest SEC offer

It would appear Doug Nussmeier can not only coach players, but he can also develop them. Literally.

The latest evidence of that comes from his son, Garrett Nussmeier, who keeps landing Southeastern Conference scholarship offers to play quarterback. Garrett Nussmeier announced the news of Georgia’s offer on Friday.

Kirby Smart’s Georgia program is the latest SEC program to offer the 2021 Texas native following a recent visit to Athens for a camp. The Bulldogs now join the likes of LSU, Missouri, South Carolina and Vanderbilt out of the SEC to offer the son of the former Alabama and Florida offensive coordinator.

The 6-foot-1, 177-pound Marcus High School product is currently ranked as a three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle by 247Sports Composite Rankings, but judging from his growing list of scholarship offers, his rating could be boosted by the time his junior season of high school football is complete. During his sophomore season, Nussmeier threw for 1557 yards with 12 touchdowns and only five interceptions.

His father, Doug, was the offensive coordinator at Alabama during the 2012 and 2013 seasons and was later hired to run Florida’s offense from 2015 through 2017.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Coley is the nation's No. 16 safety of the 2021 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports. He joins Mississippi wide receiver Deion Smith (No. 16 WR), Florida defensive tackle Anthony Hundley (No. 37 DT) and West Monroe punter Peyton Todd within LSU's committed class.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron started the first day of the new year with a commitment from the top outside linebacker of the 2021 class.

California native Raesjon Davis announced his commitment to LSU on Twitter. Davis is now the fourth player to commit to the Tigers' 2021 class, which ranks 28th nationally according to 247Sports.

"I would like to announce that I'm Committed to THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY!" Davis wrote in note posted on Twitter, along with the message, "Happy New Years!"

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Davis is the No. 1 outside linebacker of his class, according to 247Sports, and he is the No. 19 overall recruit in the nation.

The five-star joins Mississippi's Deion Smith (No. 20 wide receiver), Florida's Anthony Hundley (No. 36 defensive tackle) and West Monroe High punter Peyton Todd as players who have committed to the class.

Davis attends Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, California, which is the same high school LSU signee Elias Ricks attended before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Ricks, the nation's No. 2 cornerback of the 2020 class, signed with LSU on the first day of December's early signing period.

Davis is the first five-star recruit to commit to LSU in the 2021 class, and he also holds offers from schools like Southern Cal, Ohio State and Oregon.

LSU lands commitment from 5-star California linebacker

Keith Farner | 5 hours ago

LSU’s successful 2019 season has allowed the Tigers to extend their recruiting footprint, and that paid off with a pledge from a 5-star linebacker from California.

Raesjon Davis has reportedly committed to LSU, according to Greg Biggins of 247Sports. Davis is the No. 1 outside linebacker in the 2021 class, and the No. 19 player in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s from Santa Ana, California (Mater Dei). He has a reported 19 offers and reportedly picked LSU over Southern Cal. He’s listed at 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds.

Biggins described Davis this way: “It’s rare to find someone who can rush the passer, play in space, hit like a truck and drop in coverage like a safety but Davis can do all those things and do them well. He’s a natural pass rusher, a physical hitter but it’s his ability to cover down the field that really makes him special. You don’t see too many linebackers flash during 7v7 play but Davis makes impact plays every time we have seen him because of his athleticism and cover instincts.”

This is his evaluation from 247Sports: “An every-down linebacker who does everything well. Extremely good in coverage and has shown the ability to run with running backs and even receivers down the field. Is a very good pass rusher as well, and shows a great burst off the edge and excellent closing speed. Can break down and play in space, has very good lateral mobility and can change direction like a safety.

Is a big hitter and loves contact. Plays with an edge to his game and is difficult to play against because of how physical and aggressive he is. Projects as a weak side ‘backer because of how well he covers but we can see him playing any of the ‘backer positions. Projects as an impact, upper-tier Power 5 starter and future high-round NFL draft pick.”

Here are his highlights from Hudl:

LSU makes the cut for four-star safety Kaine Williams

ByBILLY EMBODY Jan 18, 9:00 AM

2021 Marrero (La.) John Ehret safety Kaine Williams announced his Top 6 schools on Friday via Twitter, including LSU in the mix along with Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

"I want to thank all the schools who have recruited me so far," Williams wrote in the tweet. "Please respect my decision as these are MY Top 6 schools I feel are best for me at this time. My recruitment is still open. Lets Eat."

The industry-generated 247Sports Composite ranks the 6-2, 195-pound defensive back as a four-star prospect, coming in as the No. 88 overall prospect in the country, No. 3 safety in the nation and No. 5 overall prospect in Louisiana. 247Sports ranks him even higher, coming in at No. 72 nationally, No. 3 safety in the country and No. 4 overall prospect in Louisiana.

In addition to his Top 6, Arkansas, Auburn, Miami, Tennessee and others offered Williams, who notched 50 tackles, 10 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and four interceptions as a junior. The 247Sports Crystal Ball has on prediction in for Williams to land at LSU.

Last March, Williams clocked a 4.38 pro-shuttle and a 32-inch vertical at The Opening Regional in New Orleans. Here's Williams' 247Sports scouting report according to analyst GabeBrooks:

"Big-framed safety with good height and plenty of space to continue adding bulk in college. Instinctive in coverage. Patrols a lot of territory at the back end. Ballhawking safety who's constantly around the ball. Provided terrific production as a sophomore (73 tackles, six interceptions). Dangerous with the ball and becomes a threat to score after the INT.

"Shows encouraging ability to break on the ball. Flashes impressive closing speed against the run. Generally delivers some pop upon arrival. Needs to improve consistency with tackling technique. Often a shoulder tackler instead of a wrap-up hitter. Will need to continue to fill out to maximize strength and close-quarters power. Owns strong safety frame potential but may better fit center field-type free safety role. Bona fide high-major prospect with long-term potential to reach top half of the NFL Draft."

Earlier this fall, Williams said he hoped LSU could bring home a National Championship to Louisiana and that area recruiter Mickey Joseph and safeties coach Bill Busch impress him.

"They always have a good program. It's DBU," Williams explained. "Coach Mickey is like family. I'm talking with him almost every day. Coach Busch is a nice guy. He's smart and knows what he's doing. I like how they come down to the ball and make plays on the ball in the air."

Currently, LSU has four 2021 commitments in punter Peyton Todd, defensive tackle Anthony Hundley, linebacker Raesjon Davis and wide receiver Deion Smith. The class ranks No. 16 in the country on the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

Ed Orgeron checks in on another five-star prospect

ByBILLY EMBODY 21 hours ago

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron was in the Houston area to check in on one of the nation's best 2021 prospects in Katy (Tex.) Thompkins defensive end Tunmise Adeleye, a five-star prospect on the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

The 6-3, 260-pound defensive end ranks on the 247Sports Composite as the No. 26 overall prospect in the country, No. 3 strong-side defensive end nationally and No. 5 overall prospect in Texas. On 247Sports, Adeleye ranks as a four-star prospect, coming in as the No. 70 overall prospect in the country, No. 7 strong-side defensive end in America and No. 11 overall prospect in Texas.

As far as where he'll attend college, the 247Sports Crystal Ball has Oklahoma as the favorite with 50 percent of the picks while Alabama and Texas each hold a pick each. Auburn, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas A&M, Washington and others have offered him.

This season for Thompkins, Adeleye racked up 53 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks and one forced fumble. His 2018 season was even more impressive, making 56 stops with 12 tackles for loss, eight sacks and one safety.

LSU's 2021 class has four commits on board with four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis, four-star wide receiver Deion Smith, defensive tackle Anthony Hundleyand punter Peyton Todd. The class ranks No. 17 nationally on the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting rankings.

Here's the 247Sports scouting report on Adeleye:

"Stout defensive lineman who could potentially provide position flexibility. Thick core and thin-ankled. Possesses adequate to above average height and solid build. Owns virtually college-ready size as a four-man end, but could slide inside with added bulk. Flashes impressive strength at the point of attack.

"A bull in the phone booth who can drive offensive linemen into the pocket. Consistently gets hands inside blockers to steer where he wants. Shows power to punch and shed in the run game. Plays with good pad level and leverage. Strong tackler and closes fast in pursuit. Improve explosiveness as a junior. Active, violent hands, but still learning how to use them.

"Can be more consistent in get-off quickness. Can also improve body control, particularly in pursuit. Potentially position- and scheme-versatile defensive lineman who could fit multiple roles and fronts. Legitimate high-major recruit with long-term potential to reach top half of the NFL draft."

When meeting with the media after the National Championship, Orgeron said he was looking forward to finishing the 2020 class off strong with a National Championship to sell to recruits.

"The guys are phenomenal. Obviously guys are texting us, we're texting them back," Orgeron told reporters. "We have a couple guys to sign left. But the guys that are out there have given us a tremendous response. It's going to be a fight. Everybody is after these guys.

"We plan on finishing this recruiting class strong. We have already a strong recruiting class. I'm so excited about the guys that we do have. So let's see what happens."

SU hosting 5-star, No. 1 RB in America

One week ago, LSU dipped into the Lone Star State and landed one of the nation's best running back prospects when four-star Kevontre Bradford committed to the Tigers, and he now plans to sign with the program on Wednesday.

While National Signing Day for the 2021 class is still in the distance, the Tigers are already focused on making a big splash at running back next cycle.

On Saturday, Garland (Texas) five-star Camar Wheaton arrived in Baton Rouge for an unofficial visit, giving LSU an early shot at making an impression on the No. 1 running back in the country on the 247Sports Composite.

In December, one prediction was made on Wheaton's 247Sports Crystal Ball for the Oklahoma Sooners, while the lone other prediction has gone "foggy".

Translation: Wheaton's recruitment is very much still wide open, and LSU's one of the teams making a big push ahead of his senior season.

This past season, Wheaton rushed for 1,142 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior at Lakeview Centennial.

Wheaton ranks as the nation’s No. 6 overall prospect, regardless of position. His offer list already includes some heavy hitters with LSU, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and in-state Texas and Texas A&M having extended early scholarship offers.

With several 10.6 100m times under his belt, the two-sport standout is already making a big name for himself as part of the 2021 class.

“Best thing about him is his speed,”assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Ant Saincilaire stated.

“His vision, he has very good vision. He knows what he’s doing. Very knowledgeable, he’s not a guy that says I got the ball and ran right, everything is for a reason. He’s intentional about taking things he’s learned from drills into the game. The feel he has, he can take things and go.”

In 2019, Wheaton was named the District 10-6A Overall MVP as a junior, which followed up a 2018 campaign when he was named the unanimous District 10-6A Offensive Sophomore of the Year. In 2017, the Lone Star State standout was named the District 10-6A Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.

Here's what 247Sports analyst Gabe Brooks said about what Wheaton brings to the field.

"Dynamic running back prospect with requisite body type. Adequate height with close to prototypical frame relative to projected position. Long-striding sprinter in the open field who can shorten steps to elude tacklers in the hole. Dangerous one-cut player with explosive straight-line acceleration. Flashes outstanding top-end speed verified on the track (10.67 100 as only a freshman). Slippery strong. Not afraid of contact. Shows encouraging balance upon contact. Serious home run-hitting ability. Displays encouraging patience to allow blocks to materialize. Gears down a bit when asked to change direction or string moves together. Sometimes runs high and presents a bigger target. Among the top offensive prospects in Texas for the 2021 class. Possesses early-round NFL Draft potential thanks to physical profile and legitimate track speed."

LSU Football: Ed Orgeron outlines recruiting plan for 2021

LSU football wrapped up National Signing Day with the nation’s No. 4 rated recruiting class.

LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron just wrapped the 2020 recruiting cycle (minus any potential transfers), which means he’s already making plans for the Tigers’ 2021 recruiting class.

On Wednesday, Coach O spoke at length about LSU’s 2020 recruiting class.

After discussing the players the Tigers signed on Wednesday, Orgeron shifted his attention to LSU’s 2021 recruiting class and how he plans to attack it.

Coach O told reporters that he hopes to sign at least 21-22 players during the early signing period next December (and every December moving forward).

Orgeron says ideally he'd like to sign 21-22 on the first signing day moving forward, with just three or four left on the last signing day.

I think this is a good approach by Orgeron. Get all the heavy lifting done in December, and then leave a few spots open for highly rated players who didn’t sign in December.

This approach also allows Orgeron and his staff to address any potential departures to the NFL with a transfer option. Buy Now!

(Side note: LSU has three spots remaining in their 2020 recruiting class and Orgeron is looking to add three transfers — center, linebacker and the best player available.)

Orgeron also mentioned on Wednesday that he plans to recruit Louisiana, Dallas and Houston hard over the next year.

Ed Orgeron says the 2021 class should be excellent for Louisiana talent, as well as Houston and Dallas.

"We're going to concentrate in those areas, then we're going to go nationally."

That shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Those are areas that LSU is always going to recruit hard.

For now, the Tigers only have four players committed to their 2021 recruiting class.

But I imagine we’ll see that number change drastically in the next few months, as players start to commit during spring visits.
