With the season less than three weeks away, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has announced a shift to his current staff.

On Thursday, sources told the Geaux247 staff that the defensive line coach for the 2019 season will be Bill Johnson, a Monroe native who spent 2001 to 2018 as a defensive line coach in the NFL, most recently coaching the Los Angeles Rams last season. Johnson had spent 2009-2016 as a defensive line coach with the New Orleans Saints, which included a Super Bowl win during the 2009-2010 season.

The move to add Johnson to the staff as the 2019 defensive line coach comes after defensive line coach Dennis Johnsonsuffered a recent double-knee injury, which has forced him into a wheel chair as fall camp begins. With Johnson unable to be on the field coaching, Orgeron had taken on a big role working with the defensive line during fall camp, with assistance from analyst Kenechi Udezeand graduate assistant Christian LaCouture.

Johnson, who has coached both outside linebackers and the defensive line under Orgeron, will continue in his role with the defensive line in the film room and at practices as an analyst this fall, but (Bill) Johnson will now coach the defensive line on the field during games this fall. With Johnson rehabbing his knee injuries, Orgeron had previously said that would likely fall on Udeze and LaCouture.

(Bill) Johnson graduated from Neville in Monroe (La.) before playing college football at Northwestern State. He then joined the program as a graduate assistant in 1980 before becoming the team's defensive ends and linebackers coach in 1982. He went on to a two-year stop at McNeese State before joining the Miami Hurricanes in 1987, the year before Orgeron joined the program as defensive line coach. Johnson also followed up Orgeron as the defensive line coach with the Saints, while Orgeron took the associate head coach, defensive line and recruiting coordinator job at Tennessee. He then become a defensive line coach at the college level with stops at Texas A&M, Arkansas and Louisiana Tech before moving into the NFL in 2001, where he had remained since.
