Following a long-needed eye procedure, John Emery’s sky-high potential may finally come into focus

His career, his livelihood, his future, it’s all been dependent on vision. His ability to see the hole, to read the defender, to catch the ball, it all comes down to how well his eyes work before his talents even come into the picture.

But John Emery has hardly been able to see out of one eye for as long as his parents can remember.

Emery, LSU’s five-star freshman running back, was diagnosed as legally blind in one eye early in his high school career, his father John Emery Sr. said. But he kept playing. They found short-term fixes, like wearing a special contact in one eye. He became the No. 1 running back in the country despite limited vision.

That was until last week, when he called his father post-surgery.

“Pop, I can see!” Emery yelled.

Emery underwent successful LASIK eye surgery last week to fix his vision, his parents told The Athletic, marking one of many changes to Emery as finishes his first season in Baton Rouge.
