LSU, Texas spread continues to shift

BySHEA DIXON 21 hours ago

The betting line for the Top 10 matchup between LSU and Texas continues to shift - and does so towards the Tigers.

With 72 hours until kickoff between No. 6 LSU (1-0) and No. 9 Texas (1-0), SportsLine has the spread set with LSU as 6.5-point favorites, shifting another half-point towards LSU on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams will meet at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sep. 7 in Austin, Texas.

LSU was originally favored to win by three points, but the first week of August Westgate LV Superbook’s released updated odds that had the game as a coin flip, meaning LSU’s trip to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium was projected as a pick ‘em.

Since then, LSU opened the season with a 55-3 win over Georgia Southern, showing off a new-look passing attack and a stingy defense and crisp special teams effort.

Joe Burrow hit 23-of-27 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns in a little more than two quarters of work and spread the ball around to nine different players receivers in the first half and 14 for the game.

Defensively, LSU held Georgia Southern to 98 yards of total offense, marking the second fewest total yards allowed by an Orgeron LSU team.

Texas posted a 45-14 win in the season opener against Louisiana Tech behind a big outing from the quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who connected on 28-of-38 passing for 276 yards and four touchdowns with another 34 yards rushing on eight carries. Keaontay Ingram added 78 yards and a score on 11 totes for a depleted Longhorns running back corps, and Devin Duvernay led the team in receiving with nine catches for 55 yards and a score.

"Obviously we're going to face a great opponent in Texas this week on the road," said LSU head coach Ed Orgeron. "It's going to be a very good challenge for our football team, but we're going to be up for it.

"This is a very well-coached, good football team. Going into Austin, Texas, we have to practice the noise this week. It's going to be a loud stadium. We're playing on the turf. We're going to get there early, get ready to go. Will be a tremendous challenge for our football team."

The two programs have met 17 times with Texas holding a slim 9-7-1 advantage in a series that dates back to 1896.

The Longhorns won the last meeting in the Cotton Bowl, 35-20, on New Year’s Day following the 2002 campaign. Prior to that, the two teams had not met since the 1963 Cotton Bowl, which was the last time both teams entered ranked in the Top 10.
