LSU's Derek Stingley is the 247Sports True Freshman of the Week

ByCHRIS HUMMER 5 hours ago

All-American kick returner Savon Scarverdrew one-on-one coverage, which made Utah State quarterback Jordan Love's diagnosis rather easy: A back-shoulder throw. Love took the snap, quickly looked left before moving his head right and delivering a strike at the end zone’s pylon.

A NFL-caliber QB, Love threw a solid pass. He could have pushed it a little further outside, but it looked like a perfectly catchable throw. That meant it was also in Derek Stingley’s radius, and the freshman corner went up and got it.

Stingley could not have played that better.

He had ideal position the entire way on Scarver’s inside shoulder, and Stingley went up and made a play on the ball at its highest point. Keep in mind, Scarver is one of the fastest players in America. He ran a 21.51 200-meter dash in high school. Then again … Stingley ran a 4.3 40-yard dash in high school and pairs that with a 42-inch vertical leap.

Advantage: Stingley.

The five-star freshman finished the afternoon with two tackles and his second career pick. Overall, he allowed just two receptions for 26 yards on six targets, good for an 8.3 passer rating, according to LSU Sports. Love, who is considered a potential early-round draft pick, finished the day just 15-for-30 with 150 yards and three interceptions.

Given that performance, Stingley is the 247Sports True Freshman of the Week.

If we’re being honest, this is a bit of a composite award for Stingley. There have been high-level performances by true freshmen through six weeks. Nobody’s been better than Stingley. A Day 1 starter for one of the nation’s best secondaries, Stingley’s made an early argument as one of the best overall corners in college football.

Yes, the whole thing.

Stingley had an 86.2 overall PFF College grade entering the week, which was the third-best among all corners nationally. LSU’s given up yards at an unusual pace this season, but that’s not on Stingley. For the year, Stingley’s allowed just 10 receptions on 27 targets, according to PFF College. That means opposing QBs are completing just 37 percent of their attempts against Stingley.

Elite.

Stingley, who slotted at No. 2 in the 2019 Top247, is the highest-rated cornerback in cornerback in Top247 history. He’s showing why early this season. There just aren’t many corners with his combination of size (6-foot-1, 190), speed and leaping ability. Throw in elite instincts and ball skills – he had 11 picks as a high school junior – and you have the framework of a future top 5 pick in the NFL Draft. Go ahead and mark him on your 2022 big board.

He’s that good.

Stingley is already one of the nation’s top corners after five career games. He’s more than well deserving of this True Freshman of the Week honor.
