Alabama Insider Has Update On Kickoff Time For LSU Game

There can be little doubt that the biggest matchup of this college football season will be the annual game between Alabama and LSU, currently the No. 1 and 2 team in the country. But if you’re planning on freeing up your Saturday night to watch the game, you probably won’t need to bother.

According to Michael Casagrande of AL.com, there does not appear to be any effort to move the game to primetime on November 9. The game will likely be broadcast by CBS at 3:30 p.m. The network would need to contact the SEC to negotiate moving kickoff.

The less-than-primetime start stems from CBS’ decision to designate Georgia-Notre Dame as its allocated primetime game. Usually CBS’ reserves a primetime slot for the Alabama-LSU game.

Even though they’ve played at night every year since 2010, the prospect of showing Georgia-Notre Dame was too good to pass up, as CBS rarely has the chance to show the Fighting Irish.

It just so happens that LSU has emerged as a national title contender in the same year.

Assuming Alabama and LSU stay undefeated heading into their November 9 game, it will be the first time that they enter ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively since 2011. That year, as Casagrande recaps, CBS found itself in the same situation, and made the decision to go ahead and negotiate with ESPN and the SEC to move it to primetime.

Its broadcast rights deal with the SEC allowed for one primetime game — a slot it used on Alabama’s game at Florida on Oct. 1 of that year — but a new monster was looming. The Crimson Tide’s home game with LSU was shaping into a No. 1 vs. No. 2 game dubbed the Game of the Century.

Since the network already had first pick for SEC games every week, it wasn’t a matter of if it would air the game. They wanted to control the when. So, in a unique move, CBS negotiated a deal with ESPN to allow that 2011 Alabama-LSU game to be moved to primetime.

As of now, it is expected (though not confirmed) that the game will be played at 3:30 p.m. EST on CBS.
