Cincinnati steakhouse names dish after Joe Burrow

ByCLINT BUCKLEY Jan 18, 1:43 PM

It hasn’t even been a week since Joe Burrow capped a historic season with a national championship victory over Clemson, but already he is having food named in his honor.

Burrow, who is widely presumed to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in April’s NFL Draft, now has a dish named after him at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse, which is headquartered in Cincinnati and has additional establishments in Columbus, Ohio, Lexington, Ky., Louisville, Ky., and Nashville.

The steakhouse will also donate a portion of the proceeds to the Athens County Food Pantry, which is located in Burrow’s hometown of Athens, Ohio.

The Jeff Ruby Culinary official Twitter account announced the news with a photo of the entree. The tweet read, “Introducing Steak Burrow: a 16oz Blackened Prime Ribeye w/ Creole Crawfish Sauce created in honor of likely @Bengals #1 draftee and his commitment to food insecurity in SE Ohio. We'll donate $9 for each steak sold to the Athens County Food Pantry! @TheRealJeffRuby @Joe_Burrow10."

During Burrow’s Heisman Trophy acceptance speech in December, he acknowledged the struggle people from his community endure.

“Coming from southeast Ohio it’s a very impoverished area and the poverty rate is almost two times the national average,” Burrow said. “There’s so many people there that don’t have a lot and I’m up here for all those kids in Athens and Athens County that go home to not a lot of food on the table, hungry after school. You guys can be up here, too.”

As a result of Burrow’s speech, donations poured into the food bank. The online fundraiser, powered by Facebook, has already raised more than $509,000 of the stated goal of $550,000 in the last 35 days.

Burrow signed with Ohio State in 2015, but after being buried on the quarterback depth chart, decided to transfer to LSU after earning his bachelor’s degree. Following a modest debut season with the Tigers in 2018, Burrow emerged as the face of college football with a 2019 season for the ages.

The senior set the NCAA’s single-season record for touchdown passes with 60, completed more than 76 percent of his attempts, passed for 5,671 yards, won the Heisman by the widest margin in history and was the triggerman for a team that went 7-0 against teams ranked in the AP Top 10.

Burrow shined the brightest in the biggest of games. Against the seven ranked foes, he passed for 2,783 yards and 27 touchdowns. And in LSU’s two CFP playoff wins over Oklahoma and Clemson, Burrow accounted for 14 touchdowns, including a seven-touchdown first half against OU in the Peach Bowl.

Most experts believe Burrow is a lock for the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft.

“I think the improvement was, not just significant, it was off-the-charts phenomenal,” said ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. during an appearance earlier this week on SportsCenter. “You go from 58 percent completion percentage to 78, you’re over 71 percent in every game. To play a tough, brutal schedule – six teams were ranked in the top 10 when they played them – no cupcakes. I think when you look at it, the majority of those teams they played had athletes on that defensive side. He lit them up last night, he did it all year, there was never a hiccup.

“And whenever they were challenged, he answered. He’s super competitive, he’s super smart, he’s tough. He slips and slides and dips in that pocket, he’s accurate, and he’s got a chip. He’s going to play with that chip probably throughout his career even though he’s going to be the No. 1 pick overall.”

The Bengals were 2-14 last season, the organization’s worst finish since 2002. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati’s starting quarterback since 2011, will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2020 season.

Sounds disgusting 🤮  Cold spaghetti, topped with chili that is topped with unmelted shredded cheese.
