LSUDad
Coach O signs new 6-year, $42 million contract (Source: SEC/WAFB) By Jacques Doucet | January 24, 2020 at 8:53 AM CST - Updated January 24 at 9:00 AM BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Fresh off of a historic season and a national championship, LSU has rewarded head coach Ed Orgeron with a new contract. Orgeron and the Tigers have agreed to a six-year, $42 million extension. More: Ed Orgeron, coaching staff to earn big payday for LSU’s national championship victory This marks the second straight year in which Coach O has received an extension from LSU. His deal in 2019 added two years to his contract and increased his annual salary to $4 million. The 58-year-old Larose native took over on an interim basis early in the 2016 season after Les Miles was fired.

Fishhead
So nobody is really discussing this here, but I've seen/heard others discussing Coach O's new contract. Most I've heard say he's earned it, some question it. I mean, I guess everyone agrees he's earned it, but the question is, can he keep it going to warrant this salary. Here's my take. Based on his results thus far as HC of LSU, he's been grossly UNDERPAID so far. And this is how it works. He started his job based on his assumed value at the time. He has GREATLY exceeded that value, having compiled a 40-9 record (improving every single season) and sporting the best record of ANY coach vs Top 10 opponents. So now, he's reaping the reward of those accomplishments. What does this make him? The 4th or 5th highest paid SEC coach? I honestly don't know, just assuming. Kirby? He's 2-0 against him winning both games by 3 TDs. Not even close. Gus? He's 3-0 against him. Enough said. Jimbo? Yeah, Jimbo got him in 2018. Then we took Jimbo behind the woodshed in 2019. Coach O is winning more than 80% of his games while Jimbo is averaging about 7-5 or thereabouts at A&M. Saban, OK, yeah...Saban is up 2-1 against O. 3-1 if you count the interim year. Which is fine, since his record includes it. But......Saban's salary far exceeds O's and O made it a goal to compete with InbredGumps, and we just beat em. Long story short, anyone who thinks this contract is out of line, state your reasons and back em up with factual evidence. This is the market, and quite frankly, considering who is being paid more than O right now, it's possible he's being UNDERPAID. Oh, and BTW, Dabo Swinney is reportedly the highest paid coach in the country. Scoreboard, bishes And Harbaugh...lol. STFD
Nutriaitch
you and i hashed this out through text, but i’ll do it publicly too. ive said multiple times the man deserves A raise. 6 years at $7mil GUARANTEED however is overkill. and the vast vast vast majority of people i see defending this particular contract are the same ones that said A&M was stupid for paying $7.5 for a guy that “never won anything without his other worldly Heisman winning QB”. I was actually against the raise/extension last year. Because at that time he had not accomplished anything above what got his predecessor fired. However i think some thing closer to what he was given last year $4.5 for 5 but not all guaranteed and with a buyout that was at least manageable for LSU would be more fitting. using Auburn or Michigan as examples of Stupidity does not mean we have to follow suit. Auburn would love to get rid of Gus, but can’t because they gave him a stupid contract. Dabo didn’t get Stupid money until he won a second ring and proved himself as a permanent fixture in the playoffs.
LSUDad
To bring Auburn into this, a school that at one time, was paying 3 Head Coaches at one time. Might have been 4, hard to keep up. I know Alleva in his write-up stated Jimbo, wasn’t the same Jimbo. A friend of mine asked Jimbo, why certain coaches from Fla St didn’t follow him to aTm? His reply, we had been together too long. One coach, Rick Trickett, his OL, that has had a number of stops with Jimbo. Jimbo’s S&C Coach at Fla St, he’s now back working at LSU with Tommy Moffitt. Some things just didn’t set well with so folks I know. The jury is still out on him right now. When Woody was at aTm, he put together the contract. One thing aTm has is money, lots of it. Look at the number of Head Coaches, they too have bounced around. Jimbo has the win in 2018, but what’s was done in that game, some questions. When friends I know that played and coached at aTm, tell me, y’all got screwed. Jimbo, staff and players were taken to the woodshed. Back to the question, I have no problem with the raise and contract, we all know O was under paid, is this a catch-up? Right now, O is doing his job, being paid market value. Right now, not many can argue the results. Getting what you paid for. Just look at the money taken in by the university.
dachsie
I am not unhappy with it but I think I would have been ok if it had been $6 million instead. I think O earned a pay raise but I also still don't see other schools coming for him, or him wanting to go anywhere else.

Fishhead
And there's 6 coaches active with a natty. O is obviously the most recent. I'm not certain of every coach's salary, but I know for a fact he makes less with this new contract than 3 of them. I assume les ain't pulling that kinda money at Kansas. It's commensurate with his accomplishments and facts back that up. Nootch, you like comparing him to Les. I agree his first two seasons were nothing different than what got Miles fired. Here's the thing. During those seasons, he was paid less. And he's improved every season. Now he's far exceeded ANY season Miles had...undefeated 15-0 National Champs. His recruit won Heisman and every QB award, Biletnikoff, Thorpe, e.t.c.... He earned THIS contract.

LSUDad
I know this is last seasons pay, but this might help in the discussion. The Highest-Paid College Football Coaches in 2019, Ranked ByLANCE CARTELLI Oct 28, 2019 Share1 Comments It's a good time to be a football coach in the NCAA. While the student-athletes aren't getting paid yet, the coaches are handsomely rewarded for their services. The elite leaders — such as Alabama's Nick Saban and Clemson's Dabo Swinney — earn more than many NFL coaches, while even the good-but-not-great coaches pocket millions each season. But who are the highest-paid college football coaches in the nation? Every year, USA Today publishes a database that lists the salaries of 130 FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) football coaches. Here are the 50 college football coaches who make the most money in 2019. SLIDE 1 of 50 50. Herb
This is what the market rate is. And...it might actually still be a little bit low. I understand the "do we pay this based on a single season" argument. But when you compare Orgeron's contract to Saban, Swinney, and others who have had their programs at an elite level for multiple years, it is in-line. When you look at the article Dad posted above, Orgeron is being paid in line with Kirby Smart and Gus Malzhan. Those programs may be a thorn in the side of LSU at times, but I don't see them eclipsing LSU anytime soon. This is the state of the NCAA payscale for elite FBS schools (plus Northwestern for some reason). If this is overkill and Orgeron proves to be a flash in the pan, we will know when the contract is more than half over and at that time the buyout balance will be palatable, but by that time the inflation of FBS HC salaries will probably mean that this is what we'd need to pay for a new head coach (and that will probably be the salary floor for the going rate at that time).

houtiger
The guy that surprises me is Will Muschamp, how is that guy still a head coach, and making the money he's making??? He failed miserably at Florida and had no success after that prior to USCe making him their head coach. And he is failing there also. He should be a DC IMO.
