2020 Tigers In The NFL

Sep. 22 -TAMPA — Few are privy to the interactions in a football huddle. Following Sunday’s 31-17 Bucs win, running back Leonard Fournette gave us all a glimpse.

In the third quarter, with the Bucs clinging to a one-possession lead, Fournette said he told his offensive line: “Y’all give me an inch, I’ll take it a mile.” Then he delivered, sealing the game with a 46-yard touchdown run inside the game’s final two minutes

Fournette, who took advantage of an expanded role in the offense after joining the team less than three weeks ago, gave Tampa Bay a big ground gain that it hasn’t seen often.

Dating to the beginning of the 2017 season, Fournette’s run was just the Bucs' second of more than 40 yards. Ronald Jones had a 49-yarder against the Texans last season.

And according to guard Ali Marpet, Fournette’s words definitely sparked the offensive line, which did a solid job of run blocking Sunday.

“I loved it,” Marpet said. “(It was) a little bit of a burst of energy. I’m going to try to give him more than an inch, but if that’s all he needs — it got me excited (and) I think it got the rest of the offensive line excited and fired up. The best part about it is he backed it up. He brought it.”

Joe Burrow Just Made NFL History In Today’s Game

Joe Burrow throws a pass for the Cincinnati Bengals.CLEVELAND, OHIO - SEPTEMBER 17: Joe Burrow #9 of the Cincinnati Bengals passes against the Cleveland Browns during the first quarter at FirstEnergy Stadium on September 17, 2020 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images)

The Joe Burrow era in Cincinnati appears to be on the verge of its first win. The Bengals are leading the Jaguars, 30-16, midway through the fourth quarter.

Burrow, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, has made league history. Burrow has thrown for 300 yards, one touchdown and one interception today. That is three straight 300-plus yard games for the former LSU Tigers star.

No rookie in NFL history had ever thrown for 300-plus yards in three straight games until Burrow did it on Sunday.

Well done, Joe.

Burrow is playing behind a shaky (at best) offensive line and the Bengals had the No. 1 overall pick last year for a reason. Still, the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner has shown a lot of promise early in his NFL career. Burrow has certainly given Bengals fans a lot to be excited about moving forward.

Burrow is already making the kind of throws that Bengals fans haven’t seen in a while. If you can protect him with a good offensive line, watch out moving forward. Cincinnati should be really dangerous in a year or two.

If the Bengals can hold on today, they’ll improve to 1-2-1 on the season. Cincinnati is coming off a tied game against Philadelphia.

You won't see La'El Collins on the field in 2020. The Dallas Cowboys starting right tackle has been nursing multiple issues since the offseason and the biggest one has now ended his season without it ever starting. Collins was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury ahead of Week 1, with the hopes he'd have a shot at returning once the mandatory three-week IR period expired, but the prognosis quickly turned from optimistic to bleak as the team began prepping for their Week 4 battle with the Cleveland Browns. He has now decided to undergo surgery this week to repair the injury, sources confirm to CBS Sports, starting a road to recovery that will stretch into spring 2021.

Not Tigers, but interesting.  In the off season, Bill O'Brien of the Texans got crossed wise with Deandre Hopkins (WR for the Texans, and an all Pro).  He traded Hopkins to the Cardinals for a running back, not producing at Hopkins level.  Texans are winless.  JJ Watt leads player revolt and gets O'Brien fired.

No doubt 2019 was magical.  Can't expect that to happen very often.  We're back in the real world again this year.

WHAT EVERY FORMER LSU PLAYER DID IN NFL WEEK 5

JoeBurrowsacked.jpg Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow gets rocked from behind by a hit from former LSU teammate and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen. Burrow fumbled and Queen recovered. PHOTO by Tommy Gilligan/USA Today

If there was a betting pool among former LSU defensive stars in the NFL who would be the first to sack Joe Burrow, Patrick Queen won it Sunday.

Queen, a Baltimore Ravens linebacker, had plenty of highlights in the Ravens’ 27-3 win over former Tigers’ teammate Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals.

He had 9 tackles, including 6 solo, and a 53-yard TD return off a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter.

But 9:30 left in the second quarter, he got credit for a sack, a QB hit, a caused fumble and a fumble recovery when he steamrolled a scrambling Burrow with a blindside hit.

“Joe’s a great quarterback, he’s been putting up some great numbers, so we had to get after him,” Queen said in a postgame TV interview.

“LSU prepped me for this. The standard is real high at LSU.

Joe Burrow makes NFL history again vs. Browns

So far, Joe Burrow is having the greatest season a rookie QB has ever had in NFL history.

By Jason Marcum@marcum89  Updated Oct 25, 2020, 6:59pm EDT

Syndication: The EnquirerSam Greene via Imagn Content Services, LLC

The Bengals may be losing, but Joe Burrowcontinues to have a rookie season for the ages, and he’s done so thanks to two big games vs. his new in-state rival.

When the Bengals and Browns faced off in Week 2, the top pick of the 2020 NFL Draftmade NFL history by completing 37 passes, which is the most by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. He nearly topped that mark in the second matchup with the Browns, as he completed 35/47 passes for 406 yards and three scores with one pick while running for another touchdown.

In the process, the former LSU TigersHeisman winner became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for 400+ yards and three scores in a single game. He also became just the fourth rookie in NFL history to have 5+ games of 300+ yards passing in a single season. The record is six held by Colts quarterback Andrew Luck

It included what nearly was the game-winning touchdown to Giovani Bernard with one minute left.

This is also the 25th time in NFL history that a quarterback has thrown for 300+ yards in five of his first seven games.

Burrow also narrowly missed on becoming the all-time rookie passing leader through his first seven career starts, a mark held by Cam Newton from his rookie year with the Panthers

Unfortunately, both games ended in losses, the latest being a last-second 37-34 loss to the Browns after losing 35-30 in the first matchup. If he had any semblance of a defense, the Bengals would have a winning record right now.

Instead, the Bengals are now 1-5-1 heading into their Week 8 matchup with the 5-1 Titans, then hit a bye before a Week 10 clash with the 6-0 Steelers

Based on how the season has gone thus far, Burrow will need to keep having historical performances for the Bengals to have any hope of winning.

What every former LSU player did in NFL Week 8

joeybtitans.jpg

If anything, former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow loves a seemingly impossible challenge.

Playing a revamped offensive line because of injuries featuring four new starters and without his best running back, Burrow staked his Cincinnati Bengals to a 24-7 lead and eventually gave the Tennessee Titans their second loss of the season with a 31-20 victory Sunday.

Burrow completed 26 of 37 for 249 yards and two TDs as the Bengals improved to 2-5-1.

Also worth noting, former LSU tight end Stephen Sullivan, a seventh-round draft choice by Seattle in last April’s NFL draft who was cut in August and re-signed to the Seahawks’ practice squad, made his pro debut Sunday as a defensive end. Report: Kwon Alexander traded to New Orleans Saints

ByBILLY EMBODY 64 minutes ago

LSU fans will get jacked up about one of the latest NFL trades as the San Francisco 49ers agreed to trade former Tiger Kwon Alexander to the New Orleans Saints, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday. The 49ers landed a conditional 5th round pick and a likely a player in exchange for Alexander.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the player traded by the Saints is linebacker Kiko Alonso.

Over the summer, Alexander was reportedly on the trade block for the 49ers. That was in part due to some cap issues San Francisco was facing as they tried to move Alexander's big money deal.

The Saints are coming off an overtime win against the Chicago Bears to remain tied atop the NFC South with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who play on Monday Night Football against the New York Giants this week. New Orleans got the win thanks to kicker Wil Lutz' game winning field goal.

Alexander was in his second season with the NFC West franchise, who signed him last offseason for a four-year, $54 million contract with $25.5 million in guarantees. The 49ers lost in the Super Bowl to Kansas City in February thanks to a comeback led by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Alexander suffered a torn pectoral muscle during the season that he eventually recovered well enough from to play in last year's NFC Divisional round. In the Super Bowl, he suffered a bicep injury. The bicep injury required offseason surgery.

“I just love the team. I love the game,” Alexander said last year. “It’s hard to take me away from the game. It wasn’t my leg. It wasn’t my ACL or my knee, so I was able to move around. It didn’t hurt that bad after surgery. So everything was cool. I was able to get around and stay around my teammates and keep them hyped and keep this thing going, as they’ve been doing. They’ve been holding it down so far."

Alexander has played in 59 games between his time with the Buccaneers and 49ers since he entered the NFL. He has totaled 444 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 36 tackles for loss, 26 passes defended and eight forced fumbles.

20COMMENTS

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Alexander in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of LSU after he chose to forgo his senior season. In three seasons at LSU, Alexander totaled 167 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and one and a half sacks. He led the entire LSU defense with 90 tackles in 2014.

Joe Burrow sets a midseason mark for rookie completions

Posted by Mike Florio on November 2, 2020, 6:20 AM EST

Bengals rookie quarterback Joe Burrow is the real deal.

Burrow completed 26 passes on Sunday, giving him 221 completions through eight games. Per the NFL, that’s the most completions by a player in his first eight games in NFL history.

It was also Burrow’s sixth game of 25 or more completions, one short of the all-time record for a rookie, set by Eagles quarterback Carson Wentzin 2016.

With 249 passing yards on Sunday in an upset win over the Titans, Burrow remains on pace to break the rookie passing yardage record, set by Colts quarterback Andrew Luck in 2012.

“You hear about it,” Burrow told PFT by phone on Sunday regarding the fact that he’s on pace to set multiple rookie records. “It’s tough not to hear about it when you’re talking to the media all the time and it’s a part of your job. I’m doing the best I can to put those numbers and those records behind me and focus on wins and getting better every day.”

It’s working, because he — and the team — are improving. At 2-5-1, they’re not done yet. And they could make things interesting down the stretch.

Former Tigers named to 2021 Pro Bowl

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD.com) – The NFL announced the rosters for the 2021 Pro Bowl, and four players made the cut. Most notably, rookie wide receiver Justin Jefferson earned the the honor.

Jefferson has broken multiple Minnesota Vikings records during his rookie campaign. The St. Rose native leads the team with 73 receptions (a Vikings rookie record), and he has six 100-yard games, which is the most for a Minnesota rookie. Jefferson also joins Randy Moss as the only rookies in the team’s history to break the 1,000-yard mark; he currently has 1,182 receiving yards in the 2020 season.

The other three Tigers in the Pro Bowl were all graduates of DBU.

Jamal Adams, Tyrann Mathieu and Tre’Davious White have been named to the their respective squads. Mathieu is third in the NFL with six interceptions, and Adams’ 8.5 sacks are a record for most sacks in a single season in NFL history.

That's incredible!  And he was injured and missed a couple of games.

Mathieu continues to amaze me.  He seems small for an NFL safety, but I guess in the passing era, you need more of a cover guy than a big thumper like Ronnie Lott.  His one season in Houston, they talked about how day one he made the defense better, wow.  They said he was an instant leader of the defense, and he's great in the locker room.  Andy Reid has had good things to say about him in KC.

Andy Reid touts Tyrann Mathieu's impact with Chiefs, hints Honey Badger is in the long-term plans

It doesn't appear that the Honey Badger is leaving Kansas City anytime soon

Jul 7, 2020

Tuesday's virtual press conference was largely focused on discussing Patrick Mahomesrecord-setting contract that will keep him with the Chiefs for the next decade, but that wasn't the only topic of discussion. And while Chiefs coach Andy Reid appropriately took the time to throw compliments at his quarterback, he also made sure to reference another player that was key to Kansas City's first Super Bowl run in 50 years.

"The Honey Badger is part of this too," said Reid, who was referring to Chiefs strong safety Tyrann Mathieu. "He was the first guy that texted myself and [GM Brett Veach] when the deal got done. He just said, 'Hey, what a great thing you did.' But both those two make our jobs very enjoyable. Being able to come to work and having two great leaders like that along with the other guys that love to play the game."

"I'll second that," added Mahomes. "The Honey Badger has texted me like five times. He's messaged me on Twitter. The dude's hyped up, for sure."

The 69th overall pick in the 2013 draft, Mathieu developed into an All-Pro player during his five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. After refusing to take a pay cut, he was released by the Cardinals heading into the 2018 season. Mathieu played well enough during his "prove it" season with the Houston Texans to land a three-year, $42 million contract with the Chiefs that included $26 million guaranteed.

During his first season with the Chiefs, Mathieu earned All-Pro honors for the second time in his career. While Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense understandable received the majority of the credit, Kansas City's vastly improved defense played a big factor in the team's success during the second half of the 2019 season. After allowing 225 rushing yards in their Week 10 loss to the Titans, the Chiefs' defense held five of their final nine opponents to under 100 rushing yards. In their rematch against the Titans in the AFC Championship Game, Kansas City held Derrick Henry (who had been on a roll up until that point in the postseason) to just 69 yards rushing in the Chiefs' 35-24 victory. Kansas City's pass defense also rose to the forefront, allowing just 210 passing yards against the Titans and 49ers

A large reason for the Chiefs' second half success on defense was Mathieu, who recorded four interceptions along with 12 pass breakups during the regular season while making an additional 18 tackles during the postseason. Mathieu was so good last season that he was recently tabbed as the top safety in the NFL by CBS Sports NFL writer Patrik Walker.
