College football guru Phil Steele releases preseason Top 25

Phil Steele, widely recognized as one of college football’s leading experts, has released his preseason Top 25 for 2020 via his annual season preview magazine.

Steele ranks 8 SEC teams in his preseason poll. Alabama leads the way, checking in at No. 3 behind Ohio State (No. 1) and Clemson (No. 2). Some SEC fans will likely be surprised by the two teams that follow the Crimson Tide. Texas A&M is No. 5 coming off an 8-5 season in 2019. Defending national champion LSU, which replaces 14 starters and 2 key assistant coaches, is next at No. 6 overall. The full Top 25, which  also includes Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee, can be viewed below:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Clemson
  3. Alabama
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Texas A&M
  6. LSU
  7. Georgia
  8. Notre Dame
  9. Oregon
  10. Penn State
  11. USC
  12. Texas
  13. Florida
  14. Wisconsin
  15. Michigan
  16. North Carolina
  17. Miami
  18. Virginia Tech
  19. Auburn
  20. Tennessee
  21. Kentucky
  22. UCF
  23. Iowa
  24. Oklahoma State
  25. Memphis

Steele’s rankings differ from some of the other major preseason polls. Both Sporting Newsand CBS Sports ranked Georgia ahead of LSU and Texas A&M in their polls. ESPN’s Football Power Index, a simulation-based ranking as opposed to opinion-based publication polls, ranks the top SEC teams as such: No. 3 Alabama, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 LSU, No. 9 Auburn, No. 12 Florida and No. 15 Texas A&M.

We’ll be getting even more rankings between now and the kickoff of the 2020 season, hopefully.

Oklahoma at #4 and aTm at #5 both seem to high.  OK has to prove they can play defense.  aTm gets rid of Clemson and Ga. from their schedule this year and will probably notch two more wins, but they still have to play InbredGumps, LSU, and Auburn, well all of the SECW.  Mond will still be the QB, and unless he does a Burrow transformation, he will limit what they can do.  Jimbo is recruiting well and the team should be improved, but #5, I don't see it.  LSU at #6 seems about right, Brennan just needs to play well.  If Brennan surprises to the upside, well ................ that would be fun.

Mond is the best QB in the SEC, just ask him! 😂

Mond will make one good play, then 5 bad ones, he has to show me. They return a bunch, but much of the same. We put up great numbers on them, they couldn’t cover anyone that night. We took the foot off the gas. That was a total beating, not even close.
I can see Bo’s defense giving Mond fits.

Phil Steele discusses LSU's potential in 2020

ByAUSTIN NIVISON Jul 25, 8:06 PM

After losing more than a dozen productive players from its 15-0 national championship team, LSU faces some challenges as it sets out to defend its title this fall. While the Tigers may not be as dominant as they were in 2019, there is still some elite talent on that roster.

In an interview with 92.9 The Game in Atlanta, college football expert Phil Steele discussed the Tigers’ potential in 2020. Despite losing countless stars, including quarterback Joe Burrow, the program will not need to undergo any kind of rebuild. There is still a great roster in Baton Rouge, but things may not go as smoothly as they did in 2019.

“They are going to reload as opposed to rebuild,” Steele said. “But, we are not going to see a 15-0 LSU team that just dominates teams on a weekly basis and blows away teams in the playoffs."

There’s no denying that change will be the name of the game for LSU this year. Outside of star players, the Tigers also lost passing game coordinator Joe Brady and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda in the offseason. Because of that, there will be new faces all over the place.

"They have only three returning starters on offense and they are breaking in a new quarterback and new offensive line,” Steele said. “Defensively, they will be good. They have five starters back. They also have a new defensive coordinator on defense in Bo Pelini who is changing schemes a little bit."

In his preseason rankings, Steele had LSU slotted in at No. 11. That said, he certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see them finish higher than that simply based on the raw talent Ed Orgeron has at his disposal. Of all the teams that could be most negatively affected by the lack of spring practice, it could be the Tigers, who may need to adjust on the fly in 2020.

"There is some difference there at LSU,” Steele said. “They have the talent to actually be higher than I picked them. I picked them at No. 11 in the country coming into the season. But, the inexperience and lack of the spring will set them back a little bit."

Despite all the losses his team has suffered in the offseason, Orgeron is ready to press on and see other players step up in 2020. He still believes the Tigers have one of the best teams Baton Rouge has seen in quite some time.

“Next man up,” Orgeron said. “We don’t blink. This is a great opportunity, and we’ve got a lot of hungry guys on this football team. We have a great roster right now. We have as much talent as we’ve had in any year I’ve been here -- except the quarterback position. That is going to be the position that is going to have to show up in order for us to have success."
