LSU athletic director says Coach O was being ‘too transparent’ in discussing COVID-19 cases among football players

LSU Athletic Director says discusses Coach O's comments on COVID-19 cases among players, gameday procedures

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A day after LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron revealed “most” of his players tested positive for COVID-19 at some point, Athletic Director Scott Woodward says the coach was being “a bit too transparent."

“Coach O is totally transparent and honest to a fault. It’s a great thing,” Woodward said. “This is very similar to what we’re seeing across all schools that have been doing this.”

Citing privacy concerns, LSU has not reported how many athletes have tested positive for COVID-19, though Woodward says he believes the current number is in the single-digits. Repeatedly noting that he’s not an epidemiologist, the second-year athletic director said he believes the players caught the virus away from football activities.

“Coach O was a bit too transparent and a bit too forthright,” Woodward said. “I’m very pleased with where we are.”

Woodward noted that LSU athletes get top-notch medical care, and praised the university’s staff for the safety protocols that are in place.

“It doesn’t tell the whole story and I’m not going to get into talking about everyone’s medical history. [President Tom Galligan] hears it all the time from me. It’s a great Benjamin Disraeli quote: ‘There’s lies, damned lies, and statistics.’ We’re very careful with it,” said Woodward.

Trevor Lawrence reportedly tests positive for COVID-19

Trevor Lawrence has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a report Thursday night from NFL Network.

Lawrence would be the highest-profile player yet to test positive for the virus.

If confirmed — and Clemson will certainly commission second, third and fourth tests to make sure Lawrence is positive — he would miss the Tigers’ game with Boston College on Saturday. The ACC does not have an option for Lawrence to “test out” of quarantine, meaning Lawrence could not pull a Nick Saban, assuming the positive result is confirmed.

The No. 1 Tigers are slated to visit No. 4 Notre Dame next Saturday, Nov. 7. Counting Thursday as Day 1, next Saturday would fall within the 10-day isolation period required for all positive cases, meaning he would miss one of the biggest games of the season as well.

The presumptive No. 1 pick in next spring’s draft has completed 70.7 percent of his passes for 1,833 yards (9.6 per attempt) with 17 touchdowns against two interceptions while rushing for four more scores. He ranks 12th nationally in passing efficiency.

Lawrence is backed up by DJ Uiagalelei, a 5-star true freshman from Inland Empire, Calif. Uiagalelei has appeared in five of Clemson’s six games to date, hitting 12-of-19 throws for 102 yards.

Dabo Swinney’s program is in the midst of an ACC record 31-game conference winning streak. The Tigers have not dropped a game outside the College Football Playoff since Oct. 13, 2017.

To be clear 1/13/20 v. LSU 42-25.  Maybe its karma rearing its ugly head. Praying catfish will be fine but he shouldn't have been blowing kisses to LSU fans in the 1Q.
