BATON ROUGE – The LSU Athletic Department and head coach Ed Orgeron released statements today regarding the LSU football team not participating in a bowl game this year.

LSU Athletics statement:

“LSU has informed the NCAA and SEC that it will self-impose a one-year postseason ban on its football program for the 2020-21 bowl season, in addition to self-imposed sanctions already declared. LSU leadership made this decision after careful deliberation and review of the NCAA rules violations that have been discovered in the University’s cooperative investigation with the NCAA and IARP.  This decision reflects LSU’s commitment to compliance with NCAA regulations and maintenance of institutional control. We regret the impact that this decision has on our current student-athletes, but we make it in the best interest of the football program and University. LSU will continue to cooperate with the NCAA and IARP throughout the enforcement process.”

Head coach Ed Orgeron statement:

“I respect the university’s decision to proactively address NCAA issues from the past. I share the disappointment of our student-athletes who will not be able to compete this season in a bowl game. I am especially proud of our players' dedication to the program during these unprecedented times in our country. Their pride in LSU will be the driving force as we continue to build a championship program. Geaux Tigers.”

LSU’S SELF-IMPOSED BOWL BAN IS AN ALL-TIMER

Decision-makers in sports sometimes make dumb moves. Take former Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien trading DeAndre Hopkins for a second-round pick and David Johnson for example.

We can label that as a dumb move.

What LSU announced on Wednesday evening — that can only be labeled as genius. Well, maybe we can make words like bold, courageous and inspiring fit too. But genius is where it has to start.

The Tigers are self-imposing a bowl ban for the 2020 season in conjunction with the NCAA’s investigation into violations. Ross Dellenger with SI Now tweeted out the official statement on Wednesday.

Like I said, genius.

LSU is currently sitting with a 3-5 record. The only remaining games left on the schedule are against No. 6 Florida and Ole Piss. At best, the team is sitting at 5-5, but this isn’t going to be a best-case scenario.

Far from it, actually.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Tigers finish the regular season 3-7 — only a year after finishing with a perfect 15-0 record and a national championship.

The typical bowl-eligibility requirements have been lifted for the 2020 season due to the global pandemic. That means LSU was still in position to make a bowl game, even if the record remains under the .500 mark.

And yet, we might see the Tigers miss its first bowl game since 1999.

Is that going to fly with the NCAA? Hard to tell, but Auburn is taking a similar approachwith its basketball program. Might as well give it a shot and see if it sticks.

Either way, this is one of the greatest self-imposed punishments of all time. OutKick owner Clay Travis certainly agrees.
