Report: 2 LSU players, including key RB, enter NCAA transfer portal

Keith Farner | 18 minutes ago

LSU’s roster has taken more hits recently as RB Chris Curry and DL Nelson Jenkins have entered the transfer portal.

That report came from Brody Miller of The Athletic, who noted that Jenkins opted out earlier this season. Curry played in nine games this season with 45 carries for 145 yards. His best game was the win over Florida with 17 carries for 64 yards.

Entering this season, Curry had played in 18 games with one start. His best game came in the College Football Playoff semifinal last season against Oklahoma when he started in place of an injured Clyde Edwards-Helaire and had his best game with 89 yards rushing on 16 carries. Four of those carries went for first downs. The sophomore was a 4-star prospect coming out of high school, and is from Lehigh Acres, Florida.

As for Jenkins, the sophomore lineman who is 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds opted out earlier in the season, but then also said he would return in 2021.

“I will be staying at LSU! I have a goal to achieve and a chip on my shoulder😤!! In Only God I trust,” he tweeted in September.

Tiger bait.

He was my man crush, but we need absolutely zero prima donnas on LSU's roster.

We'll do just fine without him.

I understand Chris Curry leaving.  Josh Williams was getting some playing time and Tre Bradford also.  Curry came in as a 4*, I wanted to see him succeed.  He seems strong, but not very fast.  He made a play sometimes, but not often enough to warrant more carries.  I wish him well, probably the correct move for Curry and the team.  Then we signed Kiner coming in at RB.  Just seems like it needed to happen.

Being reported on twitter (LSU odyssey acct) that TJ Finley is transferring

Does not surprise me.  I guessed at this after Johnson got the starting role and looked good.  Johnson has the mobility, and TJ does not.  TJ's arm is impressive, a little stronger than Max, but Max accuracy seemed better, and perhaps his reading of the defense and knowing where to go with the ball.  Look ahead to Brennan coming back, Johnson, and Nussmeier coming in, there is good spacing except for TJ and Max.  It looked like something had to give there.

TJ should succeed wherever he goes.  LSU is full up at QB now.  TJ with 5 games under his belt, and real film for schools to evaluate, they will know what they are getting.

Ray Thornton enters NCAA Transfer Portal

BySONNY SHIPP 95 minutes ago

Several LSU seniors decided to take advantage of the NCAA’s rule where the 2020 season would not count towards a player’s eligibility. Reserve linebacker Ray Thornton is the latest, however, it looks like he will do so at another school as sources confirmed he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Thornton, who has one year of eligibility remaining, signed with the Tigers as part of the 2016 class, ranked as the No. 15 weak-side defensive end in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, and the No. 32 overall prospect in Texas out of Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas. 247Sports tabbed him two spots lower in the Lone Star State and No. 189 overall in America.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder bounced around from outside linebacker to defensive end but never made the impact many anticipated out of high school. He finished his career with 45 tackles in 41 games with 3.0 sacks. His most memorable play may be the fumble he recovered on the opening drive in 2019’s win at Alabama hat halted a Crimson Tide possession inside the LSU 10-yard line.

Low roster numbers plagued the team this past season, but several seniors have already announced they would return for an extra year. The group includes starting defensive linemen Andre AnthonyNeil Farrell and Glen Logan, wide receiver Jontre Kirklin, center Liam Shanahan and offensive tackle Austin Deculus.

Safety JaCoby Stevens and tight end Tory Carter revealed decisions to turn pro, as did seniors like linebacker Jabril Cox,wide receiver Racey McMath, and punter Zach Von Rosenberg. Safety Cameron Lewis and cornerback Darren Evans are the only two seniors who have yet to announce their intentions.

In late December, just days after his team’s season ended with a 53-48 win over Ole Piss, LSU running back Chris Curry made the decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Now we know where he will continue his college playing career.
