New Baseball Coach Search

Lots of names being floated out there.  Strong rumor that Pat Casey the old Oregon State coach interviewed but will not be offered the job.  Too much baggage with that pitcher from a few years back and he already retired, who's to say he doesn't "retire" again next year. We need some younger blood. Florida's coach came out and professed his support for his current job which probably means he knew he wouldn't be offered the job.  He may be a good coach but I'm not a fan of the way he handles himself during the game. Others being talked about include Cliff Godwin, East Carolina , Dan McDonnell, Louisville and Mike Bianco, Ole Miss.  The knock on Bianco is that he has only coached his team to Omaha one time in 2014 (Ole Miss At Home Again).  People are talking about Tom Corbin at Vandy.  Why would he leave there, he's got a good thing going. And I'm not interested in that punch face coach at Tennessee.  With the supers being completed today, we could hear something as early as tomorrow.  I certainly don't have any connections, however, you would expect something to have leaked out by now.  This guy Kendall Rogers, who is well-respected in college baseball, leaked Casey as the leading candidate last week only to announce the next day that nah, not gonna be him.  I'm no aware of any official predictions since that.  If the team remains intact, the new coach will be inheriting a good bit of talent, 5 of our top 6 hitters were underclassmen.

Can't say I've read about or talked to anyone who mentioned Bakich as a candidate.  Doesn't mean he isn't though.

someone would have leaked his name by now if we was. or at least i would think so.

Honestly, the LSU fan in me wants to see Bianco get the job and absolutely kill it. I just don't know if he's the guy.

I can say you the suspense.
he’s not that guy.

two full decades at Ole Miss. one trip to Omaha.  And the rebel shark bears sink money and resources into that program. So  there really is no excuse.

Yes that's most of the people I talk to agree on.  Look how bad Alabama football was when they tried to hire coaches with some connection to Bear Bryant / Alabama.  Friend of mine is adamant that's its your guy McDonnell.  At some point they have to announce the new coach.

Kendall Rogers "reporting" that its Bianco or Godwin, Advocate essentially reporting the same thing.  Not sure if either has a credible source.  If it is either of those two, we should know something pretty soon.

both reported it was O’Sullivan.

they also both reported it was Casey.

Also,  if that really is the 2 names we're down to, I must say I'd be extremely disappointed in Scott Woodward.

Dude has a History of going out and hiring National title winning coaches with very little/ no direct ties to the programs they're being asked to run. Just people at the top of the profession.

But for LSU Baseball, the 2nd biggest money maker on campus, he narrows it down to 2 guys with a combined 28 years of Head Coaching experience  that have a total of one more win in Omaha than I do.   And I've never even stepped foot in that state.

Bianco with his resume would likely not even be mentioned as a candidate had he not played here.
Godwin with his resume would likely get an interview, but not sure how high up the list he would be had he not been an assistant here.

From Scott Long this morning, I trust him on this. There is always lots of poor information floating around new hires.   Somebody hears something and runs with it.

Reports surfaced yesterday suggesting that our top-two vote-getters, Godwin and Bianco, have become the focus of LSU’s search. Also, former Tiger great Todd Walker told The Fletcher Show that he’s heard Bianco has already been on campus and interviewed for the job. Walker, arguably the greatest player in LSU baseball history, also said that if Bianco is hired, he would love to be his hitting coach. Bianco served as an assistant coach at LSU during Walker’s 1993 and 1994 All-American seasons.

That said, a trusted source I heard from who is very connected to the matter assures me that there is no truth to those reports. Last week, we saw the same type of overreaching by some in the media about Pat Casey and Kevin O’Sullivan, so I implore you to take such information with a grain of salt.

More from Scott this morning.

Turning to baseball and LSU’s coaching search, I heard from a few of you yesterday who asked me to clarify something I had in Wednesday’s writeup. I said then that I had spoken to a trusted source who assured me that there was no truth to Tuesday’s reports stating that Cliff Goodwin and Mike Bianco had become the focus of LSU’s search. What I intended to convey is not that Goodwin and Bianco are not serious candidates — I think they are — but that as of Tuesday night, LSU had not narrowed its sights on just those two men. Also, my source confirmed on Tuesday night that Bianco had not interviewed for the job and no coach had been offered the position, contrary to some reports out there. That said, yes, I do consider those two men and others to be candidates for the job, and I would not be surprised if they interview for it. As I learn more, I will pass it along.

LSU baseball coach job board 3.0: With Mike Bianco out, are Tony Vitello, Jay Johnson favorites?

LSU athletics director Scott Woodward's search for a baseball coach is nearing a month after coach Paul Mainieri announced his retirement on May 28.

Woodward's early target was Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan, but he lost interest and O'Sullivan did not receive an offer.

Then it was former Oregon State coach Pat Casey, followed by Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco. Casey and Bianco both interviewed, but neither received an offer and Woodward moved on. Bianco removed his name from consideration on Sunday night.

East Carolina coach Cliff Godwin has also interviewed and has not been offered, but remains in contention.

Tennessee Head Coach Tony Vitello walks off the field after losing 9-0 to Virginia in Game 3 of the NCAA Men's College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. on Sunday, June 20, 2021.

Tennessee's Tony Vitello

Tony Vitello, 42, has dramatically turned around the Volunteers' program in just his fourth season and has the Vols in their first College World Series since 2005. Tennessee lost to Virginia, 6-0, on Sunday.

A St. Louis native and former Missouri player, Vitello was an assistant coach at Missouri (2003-10), TCU (2011-13) and Arkansas (2014-17) before becoming Tennessee's coach prior to the 2018 season. After going 29-27 and 12-18 in the SEC his first season, Vitello put the Vols in their first NCAA regional since 2005 in 2019 at 40-21 and 14-16 in the SEC. Tennessee swept a super regional from LSU to reach Omaha this season.

Before Vitello, Tennessee had 12 straight losing SEC seasons from 2006-2017 with one finish higher than fifth in the East.

Arizona's Jay Johnson

Jay Johnson, 44, has the Wildcats in the CWS for the first time since his first season as coach there in 2016 when they reached the championship series before losing to Coastal Carolina.

Pac-12 champion Arizona lost to Vanderbilt, 7-6, in 12 innings in its CWS opener on Saturday.

Johnson has no ties to the SEC or the region. A native of Oroville, California, near Sacramento, he played at Shasta College in Redding, California, and at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego, where he started his coaching career as an assistant in 2001 and became coach in 2005. He was an assistant at San Diego from 2006-13 and coach at Nevada in 2014 and '15.

Vanderbilt head baseball coach Tim Corbin is greeted by fans as they leave their hotel before the game against Arizona in the NCAA Men’s College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park Saturday, June 19, 2021 in Omaha, Neb.

Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin

Tim Corbin, 59, is the most accomplished coach on LSU's list with two national championships (2014, '19), a runner-up finish (2015) and five CWS appearances in the last 11 years with other trips in 2011, '19 and this year.

Corbin interviewed for the LSU job after the 2006 season with then-athletic director Skip Bertman, but he was not offered the job. Bertman, unsure, requested a second interview that Corbin turned down.

Before Corbin's arrival at Vanderbilt after the 2002 season, the Commodores had five straight single-digit win SEC seasons and 22 straight losing campaigns in the league.

A native of Wolfesboro, New Hampshire, who graduated from Ohio Wesleyan, Corbin was an assistant at Clemson (1994-2002) and coach at Presbyterian in Clinton, South Carolina, from 1988-93.

Louisville's Dan McDonnell

Louisville coach Dan McDonnell, 50, is one of the top coaches in the country when you consider the program he inherited.

Before his arrival prior to the 2007 season, Louisville had never reached Omaha. He has taken the Cardinals there five times, including his first season and in 2019. Louisville had reached one NCAA postseason before him. He has gone 12 times.

Ole Miss would have been interested in McDonnell, who was a Rebels' assistant from 2001-06, had LSU hired Bianco.

"My desire and belief is we can win a national championship at Louisville," he said. "And I'm enjoying the chase."

A native of Rye Brook, New York, McDonnell was an assistant at The Citadel, where he played second base from 1989-92. McDonnell played against LSU in the 1990 CWS, losing 8-2 and and 6-1.

East Carolina's Cliff Godwin

Cliff Godwin, 43, just reached his third super regional in seven seasons at East Carolina.

The Tigers' hitting coach in 2007 and '08, Godwin is a favorite candidate among former LSU players.

Godwin has been an assistant at three SEC schools.

A native of Snow Hill, North Carolina, who played at East Carolina, he coached at UNC Wilmington (2003-04), Vanderbilt (2004-05), Notre Dame (2005-06), LSU (2007-08), Central Florida (2009-11) and Ole Miss (2011-14) before getting the East Carolina job in 2015. In his last season with the Rebels, they reached the CWS for the first time since 1972.
