LSU Football: Analyst says Tigers could win national championship in 2021

One national analyst believes LSU footballcould be in for a massive rebound season in 2021.

247Sports’ Josh Pate recently discussed the most dangerous teams in college football for this upcoming season.

LSU was one of the programs that Pate named.

“LSU to me is the most dangerous team in college football this year fitting these parameters, cause there’s no ceiling,” said Pate (via 247Sports).

And not only does Pate believe the Tigers will be “dangerous” in 2021, he believes if everything goes just right that LSU could win it all.

Pate’s belief that LSU could win a national championship is rooted in the Tigers’ strong recruiting over the last several years.

“There’s no ceiling because the roster is so good, they’re literally capable of winning a national championship if everything were to go right,” explained Pate.

“This is the most dangerous team in America this year,” added the 247Sports analyst.

The Tigers’ last three recruiting classes have all finished ranked in the top five in the country, so there’s absolutely plenty of talent on LSU’s roster.

When you combine the talent with the coaching staff additions that Ed Orgeron made this past offseason, it’s easy to see why the ceiling is so high for the Tigers in 2021.

New offensive coordinator Jake Peetz is expected to bring a Joe Brady style of offense back to Baton Rouge this season. Passing game coordinator DJ Mangas, who also worked under Brady with the Carolina Panthers, will aid Peetz’s efforts.

LSU also has two quarterbacks with starting SEC experience in Myles Brennan and Max Johnson who are equally capable of leading the Tigers’ offense in 2021.

It could certainly be a fun bounce-back season for LSU this season. The rest of the SEC West should be on high alert.

Hmmm.  Natty contenders?  A long shot.  Ask Bama, Fla., Auburn, and aTm.  I'm thinking aTm lost a lot and we take them this year.

But, two new coordinators and lots of new coaches.  Will they pull it all together quickly?

I think we'll find a QB, but our running backs have never lived up to their press, Emery and Davis-Price.  There is a flash now and then, but not the every down contribution.  We need two receivers to step up and take pressure off of Boutte.  Will Kole Taylor emerge at TE?  He was OK as a frosh, but we need a lot better to be a top 10 team.

One kid I read very good things about is WR Chris Hilton.  It will be nice if he has some chemistry with the QB's this summer.

I saw one rating service pick LSU 9-3, but I'll go 10-2.

LSU All-America cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. and Eli Ricks have been named to the watch list for the 26th annual Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to college football’s defensive player of the year, the Maxwell Football Club announced.

Stingley and Ricks are looking to join past LSU winners of the Bednarik Award in Patrick Peterson (2010) and Tyrann Mathieu (2011).

Stingley, who prepped at Baton Rouge’s Dunham School, goes into the 2021 season looking to join Tommy Casanova as the only three-time first-team All-American in LSU history. Casanova, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, earned first team All-America honors as a defensive back from 1969-71.

Stingley, who started all 15 games as a true freshman during LSU’s 2019 national championship season, earned consensus All-America honors that year followed by first team All-America recognition from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) in 2020. Stingley was also voted as the SEC Newcomer of the Year in 2019 after leading the league in interceptions with six, including two in the SEC Championships Game win over Georgia.

In two years with the Tigers, Stingley has recorded 65 tackles, six interceptions and 26 pass breakups. He’s also recovered two fumbles and forced another.

Ricks, a Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native, made an immediate impact during his rookie season a year ago as he led the Tigers and ranked second in the SEC in interceptions with four. Ricks returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns – the first in a win over South Carolina and the other coming in the upset of sixth-ranked Florida.

Ricks earned Freshman All-America honors and was named third team All-America by the Associated Press. He was also named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Earlier this summer both Stingley and Ricks were named preseason All-Americans by Walter Camp.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former standout at the University of Pennsylvania and with the Philadelphia Eagles. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of ’69 and the NFL Hall of Fame’s Class of ’67.

The Bednarik Award watch list is comprised of 90 candidates on the defense.
