Jaguars Reportedly Void Leonard Fournette's Contract Guarantees

Adam Weinrib31 DEC 2018

Amazing news if you love discord in Jacksonville!

Just a few hours after Tom Coughlin publicly called out RB Leonard Fournette for being publicly disrespectful at the tail end of a let-down season, the team informed the 'back that his suspension earlier this season voiced $7.1 million worth of guarantees that lingered in his rookie deal.

Yeah, that's quite a devious little suspension, huh?

Fournette has spent all of 2018 jawing with fans, pouting on the sidelines, and nursing various maladies, so it's no shocker that he's going to cap it all off by losing $7 million dollars, a MASSIVE sum of money.

Though the news is only leaking now that the campaign is done, it appears Fournette may have been informed a few weeks back, probably after his one-game fighting suspension against the Bills officially registered. Perhaps that's why he's been so disgraceful lately?

If there's a silver lining here (there's not), it's that there's no way the Jags will draft his replacement with the seventh overall selection this April. After all, who would waste a pick that high on a RB?

Oh. Never mind. Sorry I brought that up.

Dad, while voiding the GUARANTEE, it sounds like they continue to owe LF the money if he stays on the roster.  So, to avoid actually paying him, they would have to cut him or trade him?  If they trade him then the team they trade him to would pay all the amounts due if he stays on their roster, just no guarantee?

I know you don't know his contract specifics, but absent that knowledge, from what is written, that is how I guess that would work.  But, for Jacksonville to suspend him and use that to void his guarantee, that has to drive a wedge in the relationship between Fournette and the Jags.  Sounds like they don't want him around, or they are plumb stupid and are working real hard to demotivate him.  Sounds like it just makes it a cheap deal to cut him.

Um, not sure they're the ones being stupid

It is possible that both sides are being stupid.  Jags not exactly known for their football intelligence.  But without a passing attack last year, and the whole offense being LF, and all teams keying just on him (ok, that's a little exaggerated, but not much), he gained over 1,000 yard and led them to the playoffs.  This year he's been hurt.  All of the Jag o-line is hurt.  LF does not have a good season.  I am not sure Tom Coughlin can relate to younger players, he's pretty old, and older school.

So the Jags are 5-10 going into the Texans game, woefully behind during the game, LF has been notified weeks ago that the Jags are trying to void his guarantee of 7 million.  And he's out injured and sitting on the bench laughing with TJ Yeldon.  Maybe LF sees the handwriting on the wall, they are giving up on him after 2 years, one quite good, the second not so good, and they are voiding his guarantee.

Now LF going across the field and getting in a fight with an opposing player (for which he got suspended by the NFL) is not very smart, he's supposed to be a professional player.

But with a 5-10 record and falling way behind, and they voided his guarantee weeks ago, I can see LF not being too interested in the last game.

Panthers Wire 2018 end of season awards: Donte Jackson wins best rookie

By: Isaiah Houde | January 8, 2019 8:00 am ET

Best rookie: CB Donte Jackson

Donte Jackson showed much promise as a rookie while playing all 16 games and recording four interceptions. He finished the season with 74 tackles, one sack, four tackles for loss, and nine passes deflected as well. He has blazing fast speed and solid ball skills. He demonstrated them both on his pick-2 on Drew Brees in Week 15’s Monday night matchup.

Jackson did have some communication issues and pass coverage lapses late in the season but overall he was the most effective rookie and has potential to replace James Bradberry as the No. 1 cornerback some day.

This is a Panther Team Award.

Jan. 17, 2019 -

Former LSU and St. Augustine High School running back Leonard Fournette initiated a formal challenge to the Jacksonville Jaguars' voiding of $7 million in salary Fournette was owed, according to a report from Pro Football Talk.

The Jaguars voided the $7 million in guaranteed money after a Nov. 25 scuffle with the Buffalo Bills' Shaq Lawson in which Fournette left the sideline and exchanged blows with Lawson.

Fournette was suspended for one game after the Buffalo ejection, which became the basis for the Jaguars voiding the $7 million.

An arbitrator will decide whether the team will be able to convert more than $2.9 million in 2019 and more than $4.1 million in 2020 from fully guaranteed to not guaranteed at all.

According to another Pro Football Talk report, Fournette’s contract guarantees can be voided for not playing or practicing due to reasons other than a football-related injury. The contract does not specifically say anything about suspensions being the reason for the missed time.

-------------------------------------------------

I still don't get the Jags on this one.  They MAY have the right to void his guarantees (he needs a better lawyer), they may win arbitration.  But, do they really want to cut Fournette, who was their whole offense in 2017 (1,000 yards when everyone keyed on him) and carried them to the playoffs while they were essentially without a passing attack?  He's not a bust.  He did not have a good 2018, but he was injured a lot.  The $7 mil is chump change compared to what they already paid him, he's actually in the reasonable price years of his contract, the signing bonus (18 mil) was the big deal.  They may be able to trade him, but to cut him seems really stupid.  And they have put a lot of bad blood between Fournette and the front office.  I don't see how this help the Jags, essentially wasting a first round pick.

Eagles CB Jalen Mills forced lowest completion % in red-zone this season

Mills-Finger-1024x9999.png

Despite his struggles on covering the deep-ball this past season, Eagles cornerback Jalen Mills was exquisite when covering in the red-zone.

Mills was the one that saved the Eagles from losing on a game-winning touchdown against the Falcons in the Divisional Round of the playoffs in 2018.Jalen-Mills.jpg?resize=940%2C755&ssl=1

Unfortunately, his season came to an end against the Jaguars after suffering a foot injury.

Eagles could’ve really used him against the Saints, last week.

Kwon Alexander working hard to return from knee injury

By: Luke Easterling | January 22, 2019 9:05 pm ET

One of the most important decisions the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have to make this offseason will be whether or not to bring back linebacker and defensive captain Kwon Alexander.

Alexander, a former fourth-round quick who quickly earned a starting job and established himself as one of the team’s most vocal and unquestioned leaders, suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Cleveland Browns back in October.

His rookie deal has now expired, making him an unrestricted free agent.

For Alexander’s part, he’s doing everything he can to get himself back to full strength, updating his progress along the way on social media:

The Bucs would be wise to bring back Alexander, who would give new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles a valuable weapon in his new, more aggressive scheme.

Latest news out of Jacksonville on Fournette.  Things sounding better.  I have always heard that hamstring injuries can be hard or tricky to come back from.  I still think voiding $7 million guarantee was an excessive penalty, even or getting in a fight and suspended one game (I think if the league suspends for a game, you lose your pay for that game which is a big hit for Leonard).  Anyhow, sounds like Leonard is working hard to get in great shape.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to sign linebacker Kwon Alexander to a four-year contract worth $54 million.

A person familiar with the contract said the sides came to an agreement Monday, soon after teams were allowed to contact pending unrestricted free agents. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal can’t be finalized until the new league year starts Wednesday.

Alexander entered the league as a fourth-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2015 and made the Pro Bowl his third season. But he tore the ACL in his left knee last October and played just six games. That didn’t stop San Francisco from rewarding him with the richest deal ever for an inside linebacker.

Report: Giants trade Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns

ByJOSH EDWARDS 8 minutes ago

The Cleveland Browns have acquired wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in a trade with the New York Giants according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

theOBR has been on top of the trade discussions all week within our 'Rumor Central' board. Terms were discussed publicly for the first time Wednesday afternoon. Don't miss any more insider tips by signing up for VIP access today!

The LSU product has been viewed as one of the league's rising stars since entering as the No. 12 overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. His temperamental on-field demeanor has drawn the ire of those across the league but there has never been any denying his talent. Since entering the league, he has been fined or suspended 12 times but only once since the 2016 season concluded.

The 26 year old signed a five year deal worth $90 million, including $65 million guaranteed in August of 2018. Almost immediately, the trade buzz resumed and they have persisted over the past year.

His cap hit hovers around $20 million annually over the next five seasons. Over the next two years, his dead cap hit drops dramatically from $35.5 million to $8 million.

Cleveland was a logical choice for him due to the connections. His former LSU teammate and good friend Jarvis Landry was acquired by the Browns last off-season. The team hired Beckham's former LSU and Giants wide receivers coach, Adam Henry, to serve in the same role. A relationship with quarterback Baker Mayfield began forming last off-season. Beckham took part in a summer throwing session alongside Mayfield, Landry, quarterback Tyrod Taylor, tight end David Njoku and several others.

The three time Pro Bowl selection has missed 21 games during the regular season over the course of his career. He missed 12 games during the 2017 season after suffering an ankle injury on a controversial hit by defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun, who the team is expected to part with this off-season, in the preseason against the Browns. In 2018, he recorded 77 receptions for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns. Over his four seasons in the league, he has amassed 390 receptions for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns. The wide receiver has averaged 51 receptions per season over the last two seasons. In the previous three seasons, he had averaged 96 receptions per season. Is his production tied to the decline of veteran quarterback Eli Manning?
