Football Enrolled Early For 2019 Season

I'm excited about Stingley.  I wonder how much having Fehoko on the team influenced Ika to come to LSU?  I imagine the coaches will try to get him on the same diet as Shelvin, get him down a few pounds.  For Shelvin, I'm guessing that with Alexander leaving and the playing time he got in the second half of the season, it provides motivation to keep his weight under control.  It would be frustrating to have to watch your diet, do the cardio, and not see the result of your playing time go up.

I realize it is still early and his book hasn’t been written, but Shelvin has all the looks of another 5* bust. I see a guy like Rashard Lawrence, how highly he was rated, how hard he tries, his leadership, his willingness to play through injury.... Yet with all that going for him his play has still not lived up to the hype. If a guy like that struggles to be a game changing player, how will a guy like Shelvin fare?

Some guys, it just takes sometime to click, so hopefully that will be the case. And being out of shape will make anyone look bad in a sporting competition. I’ll hold out hope, but you would have thought Shelvin was All World from his press clippings. Beating up on kids 100+ lbs lighter than him.

True Lawrence has not broken through to "all american" status, but he is a starter, an every down contributor.  I expect he asked for his NFL scout letter grade, and it came back 3rd round or lower, and he thought if he came back for his Sr. year, he could improve that with another year of training at LSU.  I hope he's right, he has the brains, the character, he could be the whole package for a team.

LSU welcomes the early-enrollees

The LSU football staff signed 19 prospects in the Early Signing Period last month, and that group included four early-enrollees who are now with the team to begin the spring semester.

On Tuesday, cornerback Derek Stingley, tight end T.K. McClendon, defensive tackle Siaki Ika and offensive lineman Charles Turner were are all enrolled in classes at LSU. Ika was the final name to arrive to campus following his high school graduation in Salt Lake City this month.

At 6-foot, 188 pounds, Stingley is currently ranked as as the No. 1 cornerback prospect in the country on the 247Sports Composite. He checks in as the No. 3 overall prospect, and the No. 2 overall prospect on 247Sports. The rankings will make one final shuffle by recruiting sites.

The Dunham School (Baton Rouge, La.) standout is projected by 247Sports as a future NFL first round selection, and his verified 4.30 40-yard dash, 4.28 shuttle and 42-inch vertical back up his talent on the field.

“Physically advanced with a developed and muscled up build,” 247Sports national analyst Charles Power said of Stingley. “Good height and length for the position. Among the best athletes in the 2019 cycle and has eye-popping combine testing numbers to his credit. A fluid mover with a long stride length. Utterly dominates inferior competition at the high school level both in coverage and as a return man. Shows outstanding downfield anticipatory and tracking skills. High interception total and turns into an offensive player with the ball in his hands. Primarily plays in off coverage, so will need to continue honing his press-man technique. Could also continue to improve his level of physicality and take-on strength as a tackler and run defender. Has one of the more advanced and unique corner skill sets in recent recruiting cycles. Projects to make an instant impact at the college level and has the talent to be a three-and-done early round draft pick.”

Stingley is expected to be a potential day one starter for the Tigers, where he would line up opposite Kristian Fulton as the team’s starting cornerback. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron also said Stingley would see action on special teams in the return game, including on punts. Stingley already began practicing with the team ahead of the Fiesta Bowl, where he drew positive reviews from teammates and coaches for his performance as a 17-year old tossed into the mix with the veterans.

With Foster Moreau and Jacory Washington both graduating, the Tigers top two returning tight ends are both coming off injuries that kept them sidelined the entire season, with Jamal Pettigrew rehabbing a torn ACL and Thaddeus Moss rehabbing a lingering foot injury. With the addition of a junior college prospect in McClendon, the staff is hoping he will help boost the tight end spot after Moreau carried the torch there this season.

The two new linemen on campus are Ika and Turner, giving LSU an early-enrollee on both the defensive and offensive lines.

Ika was one of the final additions to LSU’s Early Signing Period crop, making his announcement to play for LSU on the same day the Tigers landed Mississippi four-star cornerback Raydarious Jones. Utah’s No. 1 overall prospect is expected to contribute early in his career for LSU, where he will join Tyler Shelvin and Dominic Livingston as the team’s nose tackles for the 2019 season.
