It’s game day for the Tigers as they take on the New Mexico Lobos in Tiger Stadium. LSU looks to extend their win streak to three games after back-to-back victories over Southern and Mississippi State before their schedule ramps up.

The final tune up game for LSU, they’ll be without All-American wide receiver Kayshon Boutte who will be tending to a personal matter. His absence should open opportunities for a number of the playmakers on this squad and give some in-game touches to some of the youngsters.

We’re just hours away from kickoff with LSU and New Mexico getting things going for 6:30 PM. Here are a few pregame notes and stories to read to get you prepped for this evening:

Pregame Notes (Provided by LSU)

LSU enters the New Mexico game having won 10 straight and 59 of its last 60 games against non-conference opponents in Tiger Stadium.

LSU safety Jay Ward earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Mississippi State (11 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1 interception).

In his LSU debut, Daniels became first QB in school history to pass for 200 yards and rush for 100 yards in a game decided in regulation.

In 3 games as LSU’s starting QB, Jayden Daniels has accounted for 8 TDs (6 pass, 2 rush) and he’s completed 69.5 percent of his passes (57-of-82) for 556 yards, 6 TDs and no interceptions. He also leads the team in rushing with 225 yards and 2 TDs on 35 carries.

8 players have been credited with at least a half-sack with LB Harold Perkins, DE BJ Ojulari and DE Saivion Jones leading the way with 1.5 each.

Thru 3 games, 14 players have earned their first start in an LSU uniform (vs. Florida State - QB Daniels, LT Campbell, LG Frazier, RB Cain, CB Richardson, CB Garner, and Nickel Brooks; vs. Southern – RB Goodwin, TE M. Taylor, LB Little, DE S. Jones, DB Bernard-Converse; vs. Miss. State – RT Emery Jones, Jr., DT J. Guillory).

The Tigers are 7-1 against current members of the Mountain West Conference. Colorado State, Fresno State, San Jose State, and Wyoming were all members of the WAC when LSU faced them, but they have since joined the Mountain West.

LSU’s only loss to a current member of the Mountain West Conference came in 1992 when Colorado State beat the Tigers, 17-14, in Tiger Stadium.

Nussmeier seemed to do a little better this game.  He threw a great pass to Nabors who should have caught it but he wasnt even looking (ahem).  Maybe he did better because he wasnt getting pressured but he was definitely more in control.

Daniels tweaked his back but was able to go back in if needed.  He seemed to be doing a bit better reading the field and throwing too.  He didnt run nearly as much as in previous games.

O-line seemed to be getting a little better too.  The Lobos were feisty.

Defense did well altho not sure where everyone was on that long pass they got.

Lost a couple of TDs on crappy penalties - I still dont understand the PI one.

Overall, it was a good game that I hope helps them next week with Auburn.

I got home from Seagrove at 8 pm so only saw the second half.  A few quick observations.  NM is not a good team so it is hard to make any judgments for real.  Daniels rushed 9 times, Nuss did not take off and run.  Does Daniels not see the field well?  Is he afraid to throw into tight windows, and has more confidence in his legs to gain 8 or 10 yards, than in has ability to fit the ball into a tight window?  Nuss showed out much better than his last opportunity, but the defense he was playing was poor.  I again liked Nuss's arm talent, he has zip on the ball and he went 9 out of 10 so his accuracy is good (against a poor defense).

Noah Cain looked good, but our o-line should dominate NM.

The defense got a good scrimmage and they are having an opportunity to learn how to play the defense in game situations.  They are doing well.  Harold Perkins is as advertised, probably a star in the making.

The next 4 weeks we play Auburn, Tennessee, Florida and Ole Miss.  I think Auburn will tell us a lot, although they are not the Auburn of old either.

thanks to a food/Abita induced coma, I actually watched very little of the game.  I do plan to catch a replay before the podcast if i can though.

QBs will almost always fall back to their security blankets.  Every one.

Nuss' blanket is thinking he can rifle it anywhere, anytime, through any hole.  So that's what you see him doing.  He can run, but is much more comfortable throwing it. Even at times when the throw isn't there.

Daniels' security blanket is his legs.  He KNOWS he can make the play with his legs, so rather than risk a pass into coverage, he tucks and runs. Because of this, he still has a tendency to do it too quikly at times and doesn't see an open WR.

other recent QBs we've had.

Mett was more similar to Nuss, but from day one here had a better mental grip on the game and wasn't as reckless.
Lee used the old high school teenager "pull and pray" method
Jefferson tucked into a ball and sucked his own thumb.
Jamarcus threw it deep and had someone run under it.

um, he played SOUTHERN his last opportunity.
Southern is a terrible FCS school. As in the bottom tier of a lower division.

While nobody is going to confuse New Mexico with Alabama anytime soon, their defense is about middle of the FBS pack.  In fact there are a couple of "brand name" SEC schools still to come on our schedule that are worse on that side of the ball than the Lobos are.

no matter how shitty those cousin-fornicating redneck assholes are, a night game a Jerks-in-here Stadium is never easy.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The first time Brian Kelly’s Tigers were big favorites they handled their business and dominated the underdog Southern Jaguars.

Can they do it again against the Lobos of New Mexico?

LSU legend Skip Bertman, who knows all about being expected to “win big” all the time, gave his thoughts about Kelly and the direction of the Tiger football program.

LSU and top-ranked Georgia are the only two SEC teams that won’t be on television on Saturday, Sept. 24. Both of those games will be available via streaming on SEC Network+.

Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte won’t play in the game. Perhaps running back John Emery will see more reps against the 3-3-5 defense that the Lobos run, which is the same the Tigers just saw last week against Mississippi State.
