LSU forward Kavell Bigby-Williams played a vital role in the Tigers’ wins against Ole Piss and South Carolina last week, earning him his first SEC Player of the Week honors, the announced Monday morning.

The 6-foot-11 native of London, England, averaged a double-double (13 points, 10.5 rebounds) in the two games that likely launched the Tigers into the updated Associated Press Top 25, scheduled to release later on Monday.

“It’s a great honor,” Bigby-Williams said. “I just want to thank God for putting me in the situation and my teammates for helping me and allowing me to be player of the week.

“It’s a great achievement. There are a lot of great players in this league. It’s a great opportunity. I’m really pleased.”

Bigby-Williams kicked the week off with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in LSU’s 83-69 victory against No. 18 Ole Piss before tallying 12 points and 11 rebounds against the Gamecocks in another statement win.

The performances came after a disappointing outing in LSU’s overtime win against Arkansas in which he was virtually a non-factor against Razorbacks forward Daniel Gafford, going 0 for 2 and tallying just one block with no rebounds.

After responding to that with a statement and award-winning week, Bigby-Williams now averages 7.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, and he’s tallied a team-high 38 blocks on the season.

“He did a great job,” LSU coach Will Wade said of Bigby-Wiliams’ performance last week. “He kind of got out of himself against Arkansas. He got a little to caught up in the one-on-one matchup with “Gafford” and he didn’t really play to his strengths.

“When he plays to his strengths the way he’s done in three of the four SEC contests, he’s one of the best big guys in the SEC with his energy and how hard he plays and how hard he runs. It’s really just as simple as being (himself).”
