BATON ROUGE ― LSU football defensive line coach Jamar Cain is leaving for an assistant coaching position with the Denver Broncos in the NFL, defensive lineman Jacobian Guilloryconfirmed Saturday after the team's practice.

Cain will be a pass rush specialist coach in Denver, according to NFL Network. He told the team before Saturday's practice that he was leaving, Guillory said.

"He always told us, like, 'My goal is getting to the league.' He got his goal. You can't even be nothing but happy for him," Guillory said. "I'm just glad to be coached by coach Cain."

"Last year ... we (would) bump heads so much every day, yelling at each other. I was like, 'Nah, I can't stand this guy,' " Guillory said. "And now I'm like ... I don't know if I want to be coached by anyone else.

"Man, what weren't we bumping heads about? (It was) about me being lazy. Me being fat."

After several media reports surfaced Saturday morning LSU defensive lineman Jacobian Guillory confirmed after Saturday’s practice that Cain had informed the team of his intentions to join the staff of head coach Sean Payton as a pass rush specialist.

“He told us today,” Guillory said. “He didn’t want to tell us. He was choking up telling us. This is a goal he’s always wanted. Why can’t you be happy for that. I’m just excited for him to take that next step and be in the league and do what he’s always been doing. Bless his heart. I can’t wait for the next defensive line coach to get in so we can get rolling.”

The 42-year-old Cain, a native of Sacramento, California, was an integral part of Kelly’s first coaching and recruiting staff at LSU. He’s a 17-year coaching veteran at the collegiate level with recent stops at Fresno State, Arizona State, Oklahoma and LSU where he served last season as the Tigers defensive line coach and run game coordinator.

The move to Denver, where Payton will be in his first season after a successful run with the New Orleans Saints which included a Super Bowl, represents Cain’s first full-time job at the NFL level. He previously served summers with the Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders as part of the NFL’s Minority Internship.

Denver also added LSU athletic trainer Beau Lowery to its staff under Payton.

Matt House has been in coaching a long time, college and the NFL, mostly college.  I bet he knows some folks, and BK knows some folks also.  LSU is building, BK position is secure, so I think the LSU job is attractive to many.  I hate to see Cain leave, but I think we can make a quality hire.  The setup looks good to candidates.

No question about it.

Defensive Line Options, What’s Kelly Looking For?

LSU will have Gerald Chatman as the interim defensive line coach for the rest of spring camp, but as for the hiring process, Coach Kelly knows what he’s looking for.

“Coach Chatman, as you know, is a well-credentialed, experienced defensive line coach,” Kelly said on Thursday. “He is obviously coaching the interior defensive linemen during the spring. We feel great about that. Then Coach Jancek is coaching the JACK.

“We will go through the spring, and we are putting together our thoughts on whether we hire within or we go outside [for the hire]. All our options are on the table. It’s important that this is a position where we examine all options. We have outstanding coaches here, so we want to get through the spring and go from there.”

There are a few names being thrown around, but Kelly is prepared to do his due diligence when it comes to filling the void of Jamar Cain, who elevated the position group significantly.

LSU reportedly closing in on hire of defensive assistant from SEC school

LSU is reportedly looking to make a late hire of a defensive line coach from an SEC program, and it could be wrapped up by this weekend, according to FootballScoop.

LSU is targeting South Carolina defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey, and the 2 sides could reach agreement very soon. This would be the second staff move by Brian Kelly this offseason after he moved special teams coordinator Brian Polian into an off-field role commonly described as a general manager. Jamar Cain at LSU is currently listed as run game coordinator and defensive line coach.

Lindsey has coached the Gamecocks’ defensive line since 2021, after previously coached at Illinois. The former Chattanooga player and coach also has a number of non-Power 5 stops on his career arc.

Lindsey came to Illinois after 3 seasons at Western Kentucky where he worked with Gamecock defensive coordinator Clayton White. Lindsey was the Hilltoppers’ defensive line coach in 2017, before he coached the defensive ends and serving as the recruiting coordinator in 2018 and 2019.

Shane Beamer hasn't lost many coaches from his inaugural staff at South Carolina, with the only coaches to depart being Outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson and tight end coach Erik Kimrey in the 2021 offseason and offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Marcus Satterfield back in late November. Now for just the fourth time since the official beginning of his tenure, Coach Beamer will be searching for a new on-field assistant as per On3's Matt Zenitz, interior defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey is leaving to take the same position with the LSU Tigers.

While not the coach who brought in Zacch Pickens and Jabari Ellis, Lindsey played a key role in their development, which led to Ellis signing an UDFA contract with the New York Giants after the 2022 NFL Draft, and will likely lead to Zacch Pickens being selected between the second and fourth roundsof the 2023 NFL Draft.

Where Jimmy Lindsey's loss will be felt the most is through the Gamecocks recruiting efforts, as the North Carolina native was the primary recruiter for 2023 blue-chip signees Xzavier McLeod and Elijah Davis, and assisted in helping South Carolina land Jalon Kilgore, Vicari Swain and current 2024 commit Josiah Thompson.

In other staffing news, The Athletic reports that LSU will pay new defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey an average of $750,000 per year on a two-year contract and will pay his $300,000 South Carolina buyout. Lindsey was set to make $475,000 this year at South Carolina.

Wow, 50% raise to get a new d-line coach!  The price inflation for football coaches among the top 10 teams is astonishing, over the last 10 years.

For years all of the money went to head coaches and assistants were paid on a par with AAA minor league baseball players (which I understand is not much).  I'm glad to see assistants make a good living if they are good.

Football is the Cash Cow. You have to spend money to make money. Woody and Kelly know what they want, so often LSU beat around the bush. But so much money is from behind the scenes. One former Tiger handled a buyout. A big money donor handled getting a certain guy to LSU.

Even I could remember when LSU couldn’t handle Pat Sullivan’s buyout.

My how have things changed for the better.

LSU defensive coordinator Matt House had a strong first year in Baton Rouge. He helped keep Bryce Young in check and against Ole Miss, his unit shutd own Lane Kiffin’s offense in the second half.

After getting an extension and a raise last month, House is now earning more praise with On3’s Matt Connolly ranking him as the sixth-best defensive coordinator in the sport.

“The Tigers went from being ranked No. 64 in total defense in 2021 to No. 41 last year in House’s first year,” Connolly wrote.

Brian Kelly got a good one with House, whose last college coaching experience was at Kentucky before taking a position coach job with the Kansas City Chiefs.

LSU’s lucky to keep House after at least a couple of programs evaluated him for head coaching roles. With another good year, House could be right back in those discussions.

The good news for LSU: Kelly’s track record of hiring defensive coordinators is a good one.

Tigers coach Brian Kelly announced on Wednesday that Lindsey is stepping away from the team to deal with a "personal health matter."

Assistant John Jancek will shift to defensive line coach.

"Our prayers are with Coach Lindsey and his family, and we ask that their privacy be respected," Kelly said in a statement. "We look forward to his return to the program."

Diaco, who was the head coach at UConn from 2014 to 2016, was most recently the New Jersey Generals defensive line coach in the USFL.

On Wednesday afternoon, coach Brian Kellyshared the sad news that defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey will be stepping away from the program as he deals with a personal health issue.

John Jancek will be moved to coach the defensive line in the absence of Lindsey, who was hired earlier this offseason. Meanwhile, Bob Diaco becomes the newest member of the on-field staff, as he will be elevated from an analyst role to replace Jancek as outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.

Diaco is a former FBS head coach, spending 2014-16 at UConn where he compiled an 11-26 record with one bowl appearance. Since then, he’s served as the defensive coordinator at Nebraska, Louisiana Tech and Purdue while also coaching linebackers at Oklahoma.

Prior to joining the Tigers’ support staff, Diaco was the defensive line coach for the New Jersey Generals of the USFL for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Former LSU safety JaCoby Stevens has returned to the team as a staff member and was working with the defensive coaches on the first day of preseason practice Thursday.

Stevens played at LSU from 2017-2020, helping the Tigers win a national championship. He wore No. 7 as a senior before being drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stevens was cut by the Eagles during training camp last August and had not been re-signed.

A three-year starter, Stevens played in 42 games during his LSU career. He finally settled at safety his sophomore year and became a key player during the Tigers' 2019 title run, finishing second on the team in tackles (92) and sacks (five). He added nine tackles for loss, three interceptions and six pass breakups that season.
