It’s King Cake Season.  ThereNare so many different kinds and flavors.

these are my top three

French King Cake fro Morgan’s Street Bakery in Madisonville.  Have to pre order, served warm and tastes like an almond croissant.  Instead of a baby, there is a cherry baked in. Who ever gets the cherry, keeps the Crown

Manny Randazzo’s in Metairie

Dong Phuong bakery in New  Orleans east is a cross between a croissant and cinnamon roll   (No picture)

For the past 5 months, I’ve been working in Downtown New Orleans and have tried a wide range of King Cakes this season.  Some were great, some were good and  a few not, so good

Bitter Sweet, Haydel’s, Caluda’s, Rouse’s, Manny Randazzo, Nonna Randazzo, Randazzo’s Camelia City Bakery, Hi Do, Cannata’s, “unidentified  bakery”it was a big donut,  Gambino’s, Swiss Confectionery and probably a few that I can’t remember.

Most were good, but IMO, worst one was for Swiss.  It was very dry and I ended up with the baby.  It was actually baked inside the cake.  Usually, a king cake will disappear within an hour.  This cake was there for 2 days and was thrown away

Happy Mardi Gras!

So...

I ordered 2 king cakes from Gambino's that were supposed to be delivered on Saturday.

I've been looking forward to them arriving and have been checking the tracking updates with Fedex. Saturday arrives and my wife and I decided to go a crafts show at the Baltimore convention center. We left our house right about noon (can't remember if it was right before or right after).

When we get home, I see a couple of packages on our front step and I get excited.

Unfortunately, the 2 packages were a few pairs of Levi's blue jeans I ordered online and a new flywheel for my 1985 Celica (putting in a new clutch).

So, I decide to go check the tracking number on the King Cakes I ordered from Gambino's. According to Fedex, they delivered them at noon. No signature required. They claim they were left on the fron steps.

I looked at all the other doors to the house to see if maybe they were left at the side door...nope. My experience with too many Fedex deliveries to count, Fedex sends a 'package delivered' email almost immediately after the package is signed for if the shipper has checkd the box to send a delivery confirmation email. I have done this myself probably a hundred times when shipping stuff for work or holiday gifts to family members.

Gambino's apparently set the shipment up so that I got a delivery confirmation when the package was delivered.  What is odd about this delivery is that Fedex says the package was delivered exactly at noon on Saturday.  I got an email at 3:47 saying the package was delivered, not at 12:00.

We've never had an issue with packages being stolen off of our front porch. Not a single time. There is a thicket of trees between our house and the road and you can't see any packages from the road.

This leads me to believe that it is highly doubtful someone took the King Cakes after Fedex left them on our front stoop. Besides, the 2 packages delivered by USPS were on the stoop waiting for us when we got back home. Each was worth more than the King Cakes.

I had Fedex run a trace and I got a call back from a CSR who agreed that something was not right here.  Fedex actually has a lot of data points they can look at and while the guy that called me back was being professional, he was not jumping to any conclusions.

I honestly think the Fedex delivery guy decided to falsify delivery and keep them.  Either that or he faked his delivery records to make it look like he finished his route and he went on "holiday" instead of doing his job (which means my Kind Cakes will get delivered Monday).

I was so looking forward to them.

My trip back from La. I stopped at Billy’s Boudin, got a King Cake there. It was really good.

I was at Pocorello’s a few weeks back, Pokie had some delivered, before I could buy one. He had let a few folks try it. I asked about the King Cakes, he said, they tasted like $hit, called them and told them to come back and pick them up.

Well that sucks!!!!!

So...update....

Yesterday when my son got home, the box from Gambino's was laying on the lawn.  In my son's words "it looked like the driver just tossed the box out of his window and onto the lawn instead of putting the box on the porch".

The good news is that both King Cakes were delivered, but they were both "broken" from mis-handling.

Ah well...I'll still enjoy them after all.
