In a recent ESPN article, College Football writers picked "Breakout players from the top 25 teams to watch in 2024."

Senior writer Mark Schlabach picked running back Kaleb Jackson, who will see an increased role as a sophomore in 2024.

quote:
12. LSU Tigers
Tigers running back Kaleb Jackson already had a viral moment early in his freshman season when he stiff-armed a would-be tackler to the ground and then bulldozed defensive back Isaac Smith on a run in a 41-14 victory at Mississippi State. Former LSU receiver Malik Nabers compared Jackson's powerful running style to former Tigers star Leonard Fournette. ESPN analyst Jesse Palmer compared his massive legs to Eagles star Saquon Barkley's. Jackson, who played high school football about three miles from Tiger Stadium, ran for 165 yards with four touchdowns as a freshman. With Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. leaving for the NFL, Jackson should have a much bigger role in 2024. -- Mark Schlabach

Jacob  Hester said Jackson needed to improve his pass protection and receiving out of the backfield.

No problem! Yeah, we haven't really seen much. This was only our second spring practice we were given access to, but on Saturday, we should see a lot because we have access to the entire practice.

Hey guys! We got to see a whole lot today. These were some of my takeaways. The full practice report and article is below!

1. Da’Shawn McBryde is a beast and a name to keep an eye on in the DB room.

2. Sage Ryan had three interceptions in practice and did it out of the nickel position.

3. Tyree Adams and Bo Bordelon were getting more first team reps at tackle with Emery Jones being limited.

4. Kyren Lacy is playing like the team’s WR1.

I saw a report, Frank Wilson keeps yelling at Kaleb Jackson.  Kaleb needs to learn the plays better, in particular pass blocking role.  Josh Williams is running #1.  They want to get Jackson in the game, but he has to know what to do.  Caden Durham from Duncanville Tx does not arrive until Summer.

I saw this happened last month: NEW WIND LEGAL PR  Sr. Caden Durham runs his fastest wind legal  10.39 -100m here at TCU HS Invitational, he finished second by .02.  That would beat Kaleb Jackson's high school time in the 100 M, by about .2, but Durham is about 20 lbs. lighter.

Hmmm good on one side but bad on the other!

Both Burrow and Daniels had good but not great years for their first year starting for the Tigers.  Burrow had not played for the 3 previous years so he was understandably rusty.  I would expect Nuss to be the same.  The first quarter of the bowl game Nuss looked rusty, then he improved.  It was as fifth year seniors when Burrow and Daniels excelled.  Burrow had the great fortune to have Joe Brady come in and transform the offense, and to have Jefferson, Chase, and Marshall plus Moss to throw to, it was an NFL offense.  Nuss will have good talent to throw to, but not as good as 2019.  I expect Nuss will have a good and not great year his first year as a starter, and to be better in 2025.  I hope he is even better than I expect.  For LSU to improve their record, we need to see a lot of improvement on the defense, and without Daniels we will need to see improvement from the running backs and run blocking from the o-line.

Kelly has always made use of TE’s on offense, when he has a good one, or more. We finally have a group of TE’s to get the advantage on defenses. Many NFL teams use 12 personnel. One RB, 2 TE’s and 2 WR’s. Minnesota Vikings use 12 personnel over 8% of the time. Remember they have Tiger Justin Jefferson as their #1 WR.

6 TE’s taken in the first 63 picks of last years NFL draft. Kellys TE from ND went in the second round, the 35th pick.

With the usage of 2 TE’s, it helps the QB in more of a ball control offense. As for TE’s, a cover LB, could be too slow, a CB, too small, making a Safety having to come down in the box, spread out wide, etc. It creates mismatches. Will we use 13 personnel this season?

The extra TE’s help with the run game and play action.

“Using more double tight end formations (12 personnel) isn’t a new idea in the NFL. It’s been tried with mixed success over the last dozen years or so as a counter to the rising trend of using more 11 (3WR) personnel since the Patriots first started using it back in 2011 with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. The general idea behind it is that as modern defensive personnel have gotten smaller, using formations with larger bodies will create mismatches the offense can exploit to its advantage. The use of 12 personnel can also put opposing defenses off balance, as it can be used effectively in both the run and pass. In that sense, it pairs well with play-action in the pass game as the formation invites the idea of a run play with an extra blocker at the offense’s disposal. Those advantages made 12 personnel the most efficient passing formation in the NFL 2022 season, despite it not being used all that often.”

From the Advocate:

A grand jury on Friday rejected the charge of attempted second-degree murder against LSU running back Trey Holly, who was arrested in connection with a shooting earlier this year in Union Parish.

The Union Parish grand jury still charged Holly with one felony count of illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrumentality. His attorney, Mike Small, said Holly will plead not guilty.

CBS Sports recently made a post of the pyramid of the best players in college football as we enter the 2024 season. The list was created by Blake Brockermeyer from 247Sports.

According to Brockermeyer, LSU offensive lineman Will Campbell is one of the top players in the country. There is a reason why Brian Kelly awarded Campbell the historic No. 7 jersey when he was only a Sophomore. Due to NCAA rules, Campbell is not allowed to wear the No. 7 jersey during games. So, Kelly placed a No. 7 patch on his jersey.

Brockermeyer has Campbell listed as the No. 6 player in college football. Here is what he had to say about him.

“The top offensive tackle in the country, Campbell has excellent technique as a pass protector and does a nice job getting to the proper spot in protection with square shoulders,” Blake Brockermeyer wrote. “Campbell is generally a two-hand puncher, which can lead to problems if done exclusively, but generally stones his opponents and has excellent feet to recover if he slightly gets beat. He has strong hands and grip strength and if he’s able to get them on defenders, it’s over.”

Campbell will be entering his junior season this fall for the Tigers. As the top offensive tackle in college football, this is likely his last season in college before being drafted by the NFL.
