Former LSU outside linebacker and tight end Dantrieze Scott will continue his football career at Grambling.

The 6-foot-5, 229-pound Ferriday High graduate spent one season in Baton Rouge before entering the NCAA transfer portal in early March, and now Scott will play for the Tigers up north, a Grambling official confirmed Friday morning.

"I'm trying to get on the field right now," Scott told the Ruston News-Star. "And they made me feel at home when I went to up there."

Scott was the third LSU scholarship player to enter the NCAA transfer portal, a group that swelled to five when former running back Tae Provens entered the portal on March 21 — a week before Provens was arrested and booked on a count of third-degree rape.

Scott is the first of those five players to declare his new destination, and since he is transferring to a program in the Football Championship Subdivision, he will be eligible to play immediately at Grambling. Scott, who didn't play as a freshman at LSU, will have four years of eligibility remaining.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron said some of the turnover within his program has been because the football team entered the spring with eight scholarships over the 85 the NCAA allots every school, which happened because of low personnel turnover and a full, 25-man signing class.

With the intended transfers of five players, the Tigers would be sitting at three over the limit.

"We're getting close," Orgeron said Tuesday night during his LSU Coaches Caravan stop in West Monroe. "We're going to be fine. We're where we need to be."

Players can enter the portal by notifying their athletic department, and the school's compliance department will enter the player's name into the database within two business days. Players still have the option to remove their names.

Defensive tackles Davin Cotton and Dominic Livingston and tight end Zach Sheffer remain undeclared for their next destination.

The transfer portal became an option in October, giving Division I athletes the ability to transfer to a different school and receive a scholarship without asking their original school for permission.

In the previous model, athletes had to receive permission from their school to transfer to other schools, which allowed schools to "block" their athletes from transferring to other programs within their conferences or that were on their schedules in future seasons.

Davin Cotton is transferring to play college football at Southern University, the former LSU defensive tackle and four-star recruit announced on social media Sunday night.

The 6-foot-4, 279-pound Evangel Christian Academy graduate played in two games as a freshman in 2018, recording three total tackles.

Cotton was ranked as the No. 23 DT in the country ninth best prospect overall from Louisiana in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports.

He was the first LSU scholarship player to enter the transfer portal this offseason, which allows players to inform their current coaching staff of their decision to leave the program and be contacted by other schools.

Cotton first entered the transfer portal on Feb. 11, only to withdraw his name from the database two days later. Then, on Feb. 21, Cotton re-entered the portal.

Cotton is the second former LSU player to announce a new destination in the past week. Grambling State confirmed Friday that former outside linebacker Dantrieze Scott will be transferring into the program.

The 6-foot-5, 229-pound Scott did not play in his one season in Baton Rouge.

Defensive tackle was a focus point for LSU in its 2019 recruiting class, which included 6-4, 347-pound Siaki Ika. LSU coach Ed Orgeron said he expects Ika to play as a true freshman.

I’m excited to announce that I will be attending Southern University to further my education and play football @CoachClarkSU. #GeauxJags 💙💛

Southern plays in the Football Championship classification as opposed to the Football Bowl Subdivision, which is LSU's classification.

The Jaguars finished 7-4 last season.

Sometimes a 3* develops more than expected and plays like a 4* in college.  Sometimes a kid comes in as a 4* and turns out he was a 3* all along.  We say we trust the coaches, but O has said we need to improve on both lines.  It looks like we have made a few recruiting mistakes that have led to that.

Former LSU DL Dominic Livingston announces transfer destination: 'LSU just didn't feel like home'

ADAM SPENCER | 1 DAY AGO

Dominic Livingston was a 3-star defensive tackle out of Houston during the 2018 recruiting cycle, and ended up choosing to play for the LSU Tigers.

However, after one year in Baton Rouge, Livingston announced in February that he was entering the NCAA transfer portal and exploring his options.

Now, per 247Sports, Livingston has chosen a new school. Per the report, Livingston will go the JUCO route and play a season at Kilgore Junior College. He said LSU just never felt quite like the place he wanted to be:

“LSU just didn’t feel like home,” Livingston said. “I’m just trying to be at a place that I feel like it’s home.”

Livingston didn’t record any stats in 2018, keeping his redshirt season intact. Now, he’ll head off to Kilgore Junior College in Kilgore, Texas.

If he plays well, he could end up back at a Power 5 school as soon as 2020, so we’ll see what happens this year at JUCO.

LSU cornerback Kelvin Joseph’s father: ‘He’s staying’

Kelvin Joseph is staying at LSU. Hours after the sophomore LSU cornerback’s name entered the NCAA transfer portal, his father told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune that Joseph is staying put.

“He’s staying,” Kelvin Joseph Sr. said Monday (May 20). “He’s not going anywhere.”

Joseph entered his name into the portal Thursday after a meeting with LSU administrators following a trip to Florida in which he went on stage with Baton Rouge-native rapper NBA YoungBoy, his father confirmed.

Joseph made the decision without speaking to his father or Ed Orgeron, who is in California on vacation. His name didn’t officially show up in the portal until Monday, but by then the situation had been put to rest.

Joseph was a consistent contributor his freshman season, competing for the starting cornerback spot in fall camp before Kristian Fulton sealed the job when he was ruled eligible by the NCAA. Joseph was suspended for the Fiesta Bowl against Central Florida for a violation of team rules.

Joseph, a top-50 prospect in the 2018 class from Scotlandville, is expected to compete for the starting cornerback spot opposite Fulton this fall with star freshman Derek Stingley Jr. With Fulton recovering from a 2018 injury, Joseph and Stingley started with the first-team defense in the Spring Game in April.

Joseph has spent time at both cornerback and safety while at LSU. The Tigers are expected to have a deep defensive backfield in 2019, including a five-cornerback 2019 signing class with Stingley, Maurice Hampton, Raydarious Jones, Cordale Flott and Jay Ward.

This is the first season in which the transfer portal has been in use, as the NCAA eliminated the procedure where transfers needed to get permission from their current school before receiving another scholarship.

Entering the portal does not mean a player has to leave the school. He can remove his name and return to the team, which Joseph plans to do.

Report: LSU wide receiver Jonathan Giles has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

That's not a big surprise.  I'm not sure what they saw in him at Tx. Tech, but he never showed it at LSU.  With Justin Jefferson and sophomores like JaMarr Chase and Terrace Marshall, and Devote Lee coming in, I'm sure he could see the handwriting.  It's a sane move for him IMO.  I wish him the best.

NCAA will reportedly make it more difficult for transfers to gain immediate eligibility

Michael Wayne Bratton | 2 hours ago

In recent seasons, college football has seen several notable transfers gain immediate eligibility and while that fact has not seemingly hurt the sport, the NCAA is reportedly planning on making it tougher for players to gain immediate eligibility after transferring.

The NCAA Division I council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss closing a loophole in the current language of the guidelines that allow players to often gain immediate eligibility when leaving a school via transfer. This news comes courtesy of Dan Wolken of USA TODAY Sports.

The current guidelines state waivers can be given for “documented mitigating circumstances outside of the student-athlete’s control and directly impacts the health, safety or well-being of the student-athlete.” While the new language is set to read “documented extenuating, extraordinary and mitigating circumstances outside of the student-athlete’s control that directly impacts the health, safety or well-being of the student-athlete.”

That slight change may not be much, but the current guideline has led to representatives for student-athletes to find ways to gain immediate eligibility — starting with Shea Patterson when he left Ole Piss for Michigan.

Waivers are currently decided on a case-by-case basis, with essentially no updates or rationale given for denial of waivers.

Report: LSU DB Kelvin Joseph re-enters transfer portal

Andrew Olson | 5 hours ago

For the second time this offseason, LSU DB Kelvin Joseph is considering transferring from the Tigers.

Joseph originally entered his name into the NCAA’s Transfer Portal back on May 20. By May 30, however, he had removed his name, deciding to stay at LSU (for the time being). During that time, Joseph’s father told reportersthat the young defensive back was staying with the Tigers.

AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, the Woj of NCAA Transfer Portal stories, tweeted Monday that Joseph is indeed back in the portal. A highly sought-after recruit in the class of 2018, Joseph was ranked the No. 42 overall prospect nationally on the 247Sports Composite. The Baton Rouge product played in 11 games last season as a freshman, logging 12 total tackles and a pass breakup.

Ed Orgeron and company would certainly like to know soon if they should plan on having Joseph in the secondary this fall or not.

LSU specialist Josh Growden enters NCAA transfer portal

Michael Wayne Bratton | 1 hour ago

LSU’s special teams roster may be trimming up heading into training camp as one of the program’s punters has just entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

Senior punter Josh Growden is the latest SEC player to jump into the NCAA transfer portal as the Australian native is exploring his options elsewhere in 2019. This news was first reported by Matt Zenitz of AL.com. Growden handled all short-distant punts for the Tigers last season.

During his three seasons in Baton Rouge, Growden has attempted 96 punts with an average of 39 yards per punt. The coffin-corner specialist has seen 47 of his 96 punts downed inside the 20-yard line during his college career.

Growden also handles holding duties on LSU’s field goals and PATs, so if the program lost him, a new player would be responsible for this duty.

I was thinking the same thing about a suspension.  There are some thing you just don't do and if you don't want to be here, get gone already.

Sometimes we have an embarrassment of riches at certain positions.  Chalking this up to that, but there are still some disses you don't do.  That one was over the top...eff him.

If you can’t make it at DBU, someone will take your place. Even with the losses for the bowl game, we did well.

Former LSU lineman Cole Smith transferring to Mississippi State

Keith Farner | 2 days ago

LSU is expected to lose a lineman to a division rival, as Cole Smith, a Pontotoc, Mississippi native is looking to return to his home state.

Smith redshirted his true freshman season in 2018, and was expected to be the backup to center Lloyd Cushenberry III. He appeared in two games as a backup last season. Genespage.com reported the expected move, and added that a source said, “It’s official, Cole is coming home.” Smith was cleared to enroll for the fall semester at Mississippi State.

Smith is expected to go on scholarship in January, and take part in spring practice, according to the report. He would count toward the recruiting class of 2020, which currently has 23 verbal commitments.

Smith could be in the mix to replace senior starter Darryl Williams at center in 2020. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, 285 pounds, and can play multiple positions along the line.

Mannie Netherly announces he's entered NCAA transfer portal

ByBILLY EMBODY 2 hours ago

BATON ROUGE — On Monday, LSU released its depth chart ahead of the season opener and the two starting cornerbacks were unsurprisingly Kristian Fulton and Derek Stingley, Jr. Behind the pair is a group of true freshmen in Cordale FlottJay Ward and Raydarious Jones.

When head coach Ed Orgeron was meeting with the media, junior Mannie Netherly announced on Twitter that he's "officially in the transfer portal." In the spring, the Crosby, Texas native had entered the NCAA transfer portal before ultimately taking his name out and returning to spring practice. Orgeron feels "strong" about the group the staff has at cornerback.

"We're really really impressed with Cordale Flott. I think Cordale Flott has separated himself that if he were to have to start for us right now, we'd feel comfortable putting him in," Orgeron said at his Monday press conference. Jay Ward is a good tackler. He's very strong. Raydarious has had a couple injuries, so he's not ready to go right now. We really like those young guys. We think it's an excellent class. Christian is going to be ready to go, Derrick is going to be ready to go. We feel strong at corner.

Netherly played in 11 games last season, notching three tackles against Southeastern Louisiana, Rice and in the Fiesta Bowl against Rice. The 6-3, 185-pounder signed with the Tigers in the 2017 class, leaving high school as a four-star on the 247Sports Composite and a three-star on 247Sports.

When Netherly first entered the portal, Orgeron said he sits down with the players to hear their side of things before making a decision together. Orgeron has been vocal that he wished the portal did not exist.

"I talk to them, they come to me and they tell me why. I tell them, listen, we'd like you to stay," Orgeron said Thursday night. "If you change your mind, come back. We had to get down eight and we think it's going to work out. Those guys that leave, I hope they have success. I think every situation is different. I think they're making it too easy for players to leave. They should stay and fight it out."

Netherly joins sophomore Kelvin Joseph as the other defensive back to have transferred out of LSU this offseason. Neither one has announced a new destination yet. LSU kicks off its season opener at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU against Georgia Southern in Tiger Stadium.
