Newman's Bo Bordelon commits to LSU

BySHEA DIXON 13 minutes ago

LSU's 2022 recruiting class has taken off and evidently isn't slowing down any time soon.

On Sunday, Newman's Bo Bordelon shut down his recruitment and committed to the LSU Tigers and head coach Ed Orgeron.

The Tigers had offered the New Orleans product a verbal scholarship offer earlier this week, and it took only a matter of days before Bordelon dialed Orgeron back up and handed over his commitment.

Bo will follow in the footsteps of his father Ben Bordelon, a three-year starter and team captain on the LSU football team in the early-1990s.

“Of course, my dad played at LSU for a while. My mom went there. My sister is there now. My grandma, they all love it. Everybody in my family is a big Tiger fan. It was a really special offer,” Bordelon said in a televised interview with Garland Gillen at Fox8 in New Orleans this past week.

Bordelon, who plays left tackle for the Greenies, is the second LSU in-state commitment on the offensive line for the Tigers this weekend. On Saturday, Neville's Will Campbell, who is ranked as a top five offensive tackle prospect nationally, also committed to the Tigers.

LSU now has three offensive linemen committed for the 2022 class, with Bordelon and Campbell joining Mobile, Ala., offensive guard Lucas Taylor on the list for offensive line coach James Cregg. The Tigers have a third Louisiana offer out on the offensive line in Catholic High's Emery Jones. The 247Sports Crystal Ball favors LSU for the Baton Rouge native.

For Bordelon, he joins an LSU class that's already deep with Louisiana talent. Campbell also got on board this weekend, and the pair will block for one of the nation's top quarterbacks in St. Thomas More's Walker Howard. Howard, another LSU legacy, committed to the Tigers this past summer.

LSU also has two receivers committed in Green Oaks wideout Decoldest Crawfordand Edna Karr receiver Aaron Anderson. LSU also has an in-state commitment in from Acadiana cornerback Laterrance Welch. The Tigers have 19 verbal offers out to juniors in Louisiana's 2022 class, which is the highest mark of Orgeron's tenure when it comes to making moves on Louisiana's best at this stage of the cycle. Now, six of the nine commitments hail from the Bayou State.

The other three commitments in the class are Lucas and a pair of cornerbacks who jumped on board earlier this month. Georgia's JaDarian Rhym committed to the Tigers on Jan. 8, and the Lone Star State's Marcus Scott followed suit on Jan. 20. Welch, the Acadiana High standout who is the third cornerback commit in the class, committed on Jan. 24.

With Bordelon now in the class, five of LSU's nine commitments all came over the past three weeks.

LSU Football: New Tigers commit ready to help bring elite talent to Baton Rouge

http%3A%2F%2Fallfortennessee.com%2Ffiles%2F2013%2F09%2FZach-Ragan_avatar.JPGby Zach Ragan10h ago

LSU football landed a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Will Campbell on Saturday evening, giving the Tigers their eighth commitment to their 2022 recruiting class.

Campbell, a Louisiana native, is ranked as a top 50 overall player by 247Sports.

This is obviously a huge get for LSU. Campbell is an elite offensive lineman and he’s an in-state player. These are the kids that Ed Orgeron and his staff can’t let slip away.

The staff did an extremely nice job of recruiting Campbell and not assuming that he’d commit to LSU simply because that’s what folks expected him to do.

With Campbell, the Tigers aren’t just getting a talented offensive lineman that will be able to help LSU win in the trenches. They’re also getting a kid who is ready to help recruit even more elite talent to Baton Rouge.

LSU football’s newest commit is ready to recruit

Campbell is all when it comes to being a Tiger.

In fact, Campbell told Rivals recently that he’s going to immediately get hard to work trying to sway some recruits to LSU.

“I’m going after Emery Jones and Malik Agbo, some defensive linemen like Jeremiah Alexander from Alabama, and Omari Abor out of Duncanville,” said Campbell. “We’re gonna get guys in the trenches that can help us win a national championship and bring one back to Baton Rouge.”

Emery Jones is a three-star offensive tackle from Baton Rouge, while Malik Agbo is a four-star offensive tackle from Washington. Omari Abor is a four-star defensive end from Texas. All three would be great additions for the Tigers.

Commits being able to “recruit” other players is something that’s extremely overlooked. Coaches can only do so much recruiting. And ultimately, it’s the relationships between players that can be the most important ingredient to a team’s success.

It’s good news for the Tigers that Campbell is willing to get into the recruiting trenches to help make LSU a better team.

LSU Football Adds Newman Receiver AJ Johnson to 2022 Recruiting Class

LSU lands a top tier New Orleans recruit to the 2022 class

LSU has added another high end Louisiana recruit to the 2022 class. On Friday, receiver AJ Johnson announced his commitment to the Tigers' program, joining offensive tackles Will Campbell and Bo Bordelon as the third addition to the class in the last three weeks.

The Tigers also now have 10 total committed players in the 2022 recruiting cycle, including two receivers in Decoldest Crawford and Aaron Anderson. Johnson really broke onto the scene last season at Newman High School as the Greenies No. 1 target for quarterback Arch Manning.

We profiled Johnson last summer, who said that he could feel that an LSU offer was coming, but that the program just needed to see him play after transferring from McMain High School.

"I just feel like 99.9% of the time I will come down with the ball, my vertical is 42 inches so I'm definitely able to come down with those jump balls," Johnson said. "Since I really couldn't play for a year, I'm more explosive and that's what I've been trying to add to my game."

Johnson also talked about his relationship with Manning, who is a high target for practically every program in the country out of the 2023 class.

"We're actually real close, we're like brothers honestly and we have a lot of fun with each other," Johnson said. "Putting in that bond off the field is what we've been doing. We've talked a lot about remaining humble throughout the recruiting process, that's the No. 1 thing.“

LSU has been on a recruiting frenzy over the last two weeks and will now turn its sights to filling out the 2021 class on the right note. The Tigers have plenty of irons in the fire with how they could potentially fill out the final tapir of the class after landing Brian Thomas and Clemson grad transfer Mike Jones Jr.

BREAKING: AJ Johnson commits to LSU

BySHEA DIXON 3 hours ago

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron and his staff have landed another commitment for the 2022 recruiting class, and once again, it's a Louisiana domino that drops.

On Friday, the Tigers reeled in a verbal commitment from Newman wide receiver AJ Johnson, who is ranked as one of the Top 15 prospects in a deep Louisiana class this cycle.

Johnson shut things down and committed to LSU's staff over offers from Georgia, Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Virginia, and several others

LSU wide receivers coach Mickey Josephand offensive analyst Carter Sheridan both played key roles in Johnson's recruitment.

"(Johnson) has that size with a big catch radius and is such a hard worker,” Newman head coach Nelson Stewart said. “You watch him just for a little bit and you quickly see why the college coaches jumped on him so fast.

“All the kids have really worked hard, but when you have kids like AJ and Arch leading the way it makes it easier for all to see hard work pays off."

In eight games as a junior this past season, Johnson became the top target for Newman quarterback and Top 100 prospect Arch Manning as he led the team with 33 catches for 481 yards and five touchdowns.

Ranked the No. 33 receiver in the country in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, Johnson currently checks in as a Top 250 prospect after his first season of football since his freshman season at McMain. Johnson sat out the 2019 season as a result of transfer rules.

The Tigers remain ranked as the No. 3 recruiting class on the 247Sports Team Rankings, trailing only Ohio State and Georgia.

The commitment from Johnson pushes LSU up to 10 commitments for the 2022 class, and seven are from the state of Louisiana. Johnson is the third receiver commitment on board, joining Edna Karr's Aaron Anderson and Green Oaks' Decoldest Crawford.

The Tigers also have in-state commitments from quarterback Walker Howard out of St. Thomas More and Neville offensive tackle Will Campbell. The staff also has reeled in a verbal pledge from Johnson's high school teammate at Newman in offensive lineman Bo Bordelon. Acadiana's Laterrance Welch is the other in-state commitment for LSU.

The 2022 recruiting cycle is seeing QB dominos fall harder than ever before

BySTEVE WILTFONG Feb 18, 11:42 AM

At one point in the process, it looked like Lincoln Riley was going to do it again. And by again, we mean scoring a commitment from the Top247’s No. 1 quarterback in the country, like he did with his current starter Spencer Rattler and in 2021 with Caleb Williams.

The passer we’re talking about this time is Quinn Ewers, the Southlake (Texas) Carroll five-star, and original recruiting domino at the position in the 2022 cycle.

Ewers took an early visit to Norman and from the moment he stepped on campus that day he felt like he was walking around his future home. He and Riley found a whiteboard and were drawing up plays and talking X’s and O’s and the chemistry was phenomenal.

The blue-chipper, who’s been hailed as the best QB prospect since Trevor Lawrence, left thinking he potentially found the one.

But time goes on and tastes change. Ewers ultimately committed to Texas in August but the trajectory of Tom Herman’s program wasn’t what he thought, leading to his decommitment in October and ultimate pledge to Ohio State.

The Buckeyes were ultimately the runner-up for Ewers and never relented after he originally committed to the Longhorns. In fact Ryan Day, lead recruiter Corey Dennis & Co. turned it up for Ewers and ultimately won his word. Since Steve Sarkisian was hired in Austin, Day and his staff have come even harder, continuing to communicate with Ewers at a pace like he isn’t committed at all.

In the end, Ewers committed to Ohio State over Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and USC, setting off a cascading wave dominoes:

  • Make no mistake: Sarkisian is still coming after Ewers with everything he’s got, contacting the kid and his family and also his coaches at Carroll (the Longhorns are still recruiting local passer Cade Klubnik of Austin Westlake as well). But over the weekend, Texas secured a pledge from another 247Sports Composite five-star Maalik Murphy, the country’s No. 2 pro-style passer and No. 30 prospect overall. UCLA was the runner-up for Murphy and at this point is the only signal-caller Chip Kelly and his staff had offered.
  • Texas A&M ended up casting a big net at quarterback but ultimately got the No. 2 guy in the state in Conner Weigmanwho chose to play in College Station over the Longhorns, Sooners and several others.
  • Oklahoma went to the transfer portal for its quarterback, landing former Penn State player Micah Bowens, the nation’s No. 16 dual-threat player in the 2020 class. Riley is not expected to take a high school quarterback this cycle with his only other offers having gone out to Weigman and Ty Simpson, who we’ll touch on soon. The Sooners are instead all-in on elite 2023 Malachi Nelson moving forward.
  • USC ultimately found their guy in September in Queen Creek (Ariz.) High’s Devin Brown. They are done and like the Sooners have turned their attention all the way to Nelson in 2023, who also happens to be the only quarterback Day and the Buckeyes have offered a full-ride to.

EWERS ISN'T THE ONLY 5-STAR QB TO SHUFFLE THE DECK

I can't find any precedent where the top 2 QBs in a recruiting class decommitted from their original destination. Gunner Stockton, the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback out of Tiger (Ga.) Rabun County who gave South Carolina an early verbal back in August. Stockton had some particularly strong relationships in Columbia, particularly with then-offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and Connor Shaw, but once head coach Will Muschamp was fired during the season ultimately sending Bobo to Auburn in the same role, he reopened the recruiting process in January.

While Auburn appeared to have momentum because of the Bobo hiring on the The Plains, there was too much doubt regarding the program and their new staff moving forward and Stockton found his way to Georgia, committing to the Bulldogs on Jan. 28.

When the Auburn staff saw the writing on the wall with Stockton, they offered another Peach State standout in Holden Geriner on Jan. 26 and he didn’t take long to take Bryan Harsin up on the opportunity, committing on Feb. 1.

South Carolina has turned its attention to the likes of Tanner BaileyDrew Allar and Tayven Jackson.

THE NEXT BIG DOMINO FALLING SHORTLY
With four of the top-five ranked quarterbacks already committed, the next big domino is Ty Simpson

We have Ewers to Ohio State, Stockton to Georgia, Murphy to Texas and Walker Howard staying home to play for LSU. Next up to make a move is Simpson, the No. 5 overall quarterback who has a Feb. 26 commitment date locked in.

While Clemson is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite, Alabama is very much in this. The other two finalists are Ole Miss and Tennessee.

If Clemson loses on the Simpson sweepstakes, they’ll continue their pursuit of Braden Davis (No. 152 overall) and perhaps make a move on Klubnik.

Alabama has several offers out at the position but like Clemson, there is no doubt Simpson is the top target.

There was a time where Tennessee looked to be in great position for Simpson but following the coaching change in Knoxville, it set the Vols back some. Head coach Josh Huepel and his new staff are doing all they can to keep the coveted in-state player home but if they can’t, look for them to go all in on a guy like fellow All-American Sam Horn (who likes Missouri quite a bit right now).

ANOTHER QB COMES OFF THE BOARD SOON

Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy quarterback and California native AJ Duffy will announce his college decision in March. Arizona State is trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball with his other finalists being Florida State, Michigan State, Penn State and Oregon. The Seminoles already have a quarterback commit in Nicco Marchiol but they’d certainly take two if the other was Duffy.

The 2022 season is loaded with talent in the state of Louisiana. LSU won’t have to look outside the state for much. Having that much D-1 talent, we won’t get them all, but will get our share.

Back in the early 90’s, Ruston had a team, they had 15-16 players off that team sign college scholarships. They one state that year. Loads of talent, I think the Tigers signed 3 of the Ruston players.

LSU Football: Tigers should be a lock to land nation’s top tight end

http%3A%2F%2Fallfortennessee.com%2Ffiles%2F2013%2F09%2FZach-Ragan_avatar.JPGby Zach Ragan2d ago

LSU football should be the team to beat for one of the nation’s top-rated 2022 tight ends.

Jake Johnson, 6-foot-5/210 lbs from Bogart, GA (Oconee County), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 tight end in the country.

Johnson is a priority for the Tigers, due to the loss of tight end Arik Gilbert, who recently announced his transfer to the Florida Gators.

And fortunately for LSU, Johnson appears to be destined for Baton Rouge.

LSU football could be the team to beat for Jake Johnson

There have been four 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions made for Johnson and all four have the Tigers landing the four-star tight end.

There’s a very good reason for the optimism surrounding Johnson to LSU.

It’s because Johnson is the younger brother of Max Johnson, a former four-star quarterback who signed with the Tigers during the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Clemson and Georgia will also be factors for Johnson, but this is LSU’s recruiting battle to lose.

At this point, the only way the Tigers miss on Johnson is if his brother grows unhappy at Baton Rouge over the next year and decides to transfer.

That’s certainly possible, considering the amount of players that are hitting the transfer portal these days (and the one-time transfer rule that’s eventually expected to be passed by the NCAA). But there’s nothing so far to indicate that the older Johnson is unhappy at LSU.

Johnson played in eight games as a true freshman for the Tigers last season, passing for 1,069 yards, eight touchdowns, and only one interception. He’ll likely start the 2021 season behind Myles Brennan on the depth chart (TJ Finley will also be a factor), but the potential is there for him to have an impact on LSU’s offense.

LSU Football: Why Bo Bordelon is an important commit for the Tigers

http%3A%2F%2Fallfortennessee.com%2Ffiles%2F2013%2F09%2FZach-Ragan_avatar.JPGby Zach Ragan21h ago

LSU football currently has 10 commits to its 2022 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation.

One of those commits is three-star offensive lineman Bo Bordelon.

Bordelon, 6-foot-5/265 lbs from New Orleans, LA (Isidore Newman), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 74 offensive tackle in the country. He’s also ranked as the No. 784 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

Usually, LSU commits are ranked quite a bit higher than Bordelon.

I’m sure there are some folks who think the Tigers are only taking Bordelon because his father, Ben, played at LSU from 1993-1996.

But that is nowhere near the case.

Bo Bordelon is an important commit for LSU football

Bordelon may not be viewed as a highly-rated player by the recruiting services, but Ed Orgeron and his staff clearly like what they see from the Louisiana native. Otherwise, the Tigers wouldn’t be using a valuable scholarship on Bordelon.

The key reason LSU likely took a commitment from Bordelon is because of the incredible versatility he’ll be able to provide the Tigers.

Bordelon’s high school coach, Nelson Stewart, recently spoke with 247Sportsabout that versatility.

“I think they like him as a tackle, but I do think he could play guard too,” explained Stewart. “He’s so long, and has a great reach, where I think it’s hard to not play him at tackle. He’s so smart and so gifted, I think he could play anywhere along the line.”

247Sports writer Sonny Shipp also noted that there’s been some “speculation” that Bordelon could possibly play center in the SEC.

That kind of versatility is absolutely invaluable in college football. Programs can never have enough depth along the offensive line.

Bordelon is the type of player that LSU can plug in anywhere, at any point. He may not wow recruiting services, but the Tigers obviously realize what kind of value he could bring LSU.

Landing These Three In State Prospects Would Solidify LSU Football’s 2022 Class in Elite Status

Tigers putting a premium on Louisiana talent in 2022 class with early commitment success
BRIAN SMITH

  •

The Tigers are off to a fantastic recruiting start, and there are at least three key recruits LSU needs to bring into the class of 2022 to accomplish its recruiting goals.

As it has been mentioned prior, the 2022 in-state talent pool is tremendous. If LSU signed nothing but in-state players for 2022, it could easily sign a top 10 class. Yes, truly, this is a banner year for Louisiana high school football prospects, and we all know how deep the talent runs in the Pelican State. Here are three prospects to keep an eye on moving forward.

LSU holds an advantage that few college football programs can do, and that’s being located in a city that consistently produces big-time Division I recruits. One of the best players for the class of 2022 would be Istrouma High School running back Le’veon Moss.

0:44/0:50
logo.png

If you need an every-down back, this young man can provide that. Running inside the tackles and grinding out yardage is his main trait, as he’s a workhorse running back. What’s more impressive would be his overall skillset.

The 6-foot-0, 190-pound running back possesses the speed to the perimeter to score long touchdowns, a great stiff arm, bounces off tacklers, provides a good jump cut, grinds for extra yards after contact, and he’s a north-south runner that does not dance and waste opportunities.

Moss is the type of back the Tigers have long since utilized within its rushing attacks. He’s being recruited by the nation’s top programs, and LSU is one of the favorites. As for competition, keep an eye out for the Crimson Tide as it's usually the one program that consistently gives the Tigers a run for in-state players, but LSU is considered the favorite.

Moving east 45 minutes to Ponchatoula High School, that’s where one can find star safety recruit Jacoby Matthews. Much like Moss, Matthews is a do-it-all player for his high school that plays quarterback and defensive back. He’s moved around to take advantage of his natural athleticism and football IQ.

The best part of Matthews’ game is that he finds the football on defense. In fact, the 6-foot-0, 205-pound safety seems like he’s waiting for the ball when it’s in the air. This instinctive ball hawk patrols the deep secondary like he knows the other team’s play calls. He’s just uncanny with how he’s in the right spot at the right time.

As for his skills, Matthews can make moves that few can match. Stopping and starting on a dime, moving laterally coming out of a sprint, and hitting the jets in a moment’s notice.

This young man will have his pick of schools. The usual suspects are in pursuit, including LSU, Alabama, Florida State, Florida, Auburn, Georgia and Ole Miss to name a few. While the Tigers do not need to load up on safeties for 2022, they simply cannot miss on such a talented in-state prospect.

A third and final recruit to watch to discuss for 2022 would be Shazz Preston from the small Mississippi River community town of St. James. The Tigers have always prioritized players in this southern section of Louisiana, and Preston will not be an exception.

He’s special with the ball in his hands, and the 6-foot-0, 190-pound Preston is really difficult for a cornerback to keep up with as Preston makes hard cuts in his routes look easy. This is the in-state playmaker that LSU and every major college program would love to add to its roster.

Preston is intriguing for LSU’s wide-open offense because he’s not just a one-trick pony. He could play in the slot, be the outside wide receiver responsible for taking the top off a defense, and he’s capable of being moved around from play to play to keep defenses honest. As for recruiting, the Tigers will be in a battle.

Mississippi State signed Preston’s older brother, Shawn Preston, and he will be a junior for the Bulldogs this fall. The safety actually led Mississippi State with 11 tackles when playing against LSU this past September in the Bulldogs victory in Death Valley.

Beyond Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn and Georgia are all possible destinations amongst many offers. LSU will likely be in a battle until he actually signs his letter of intent on national signing day. Preston is a special player and schools will come after him even if he did in fact commit to LSU early.

Overall, the class of 2022 is headed in the right direction for LSU. Continuing to land the elite in-state prospects will continue to be a priority for the Tigers.

LSU Football: Tigers ranked as No. 1 contender for 5-star DB

by Zach Ragan21 hours agoFollow @zachTNT

One of LSU football‘s top targets in the 2022 recruiting class is five-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews.

Mathews, 6-foot-1/204 lbs from Ponchatoula, LA (Ponchatoula), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 safety in the country and the No. 27 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

Suffice it to say, Mathews is a must-land player for the Tigers (LSU can’t afford to miss on one of the top-rated in-state players, especially with the program’s reputation as “DBU”).

Mathews, however, won’t be an easy player to land. He’s open to leaving the state, which will mean the Tigers will have to recruit him just like they’d recruit an out-of-state player.

Where does LSU football rank among the contenders for Jacoby Mathews?

Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Gorney “ranked the contenders” this week for Mathews.

And despite the talk that Mathews could leave the state, Gorney still has LSU as the No. 1 contender for the elite safety.

“Mathews has been open about considering leaving and wanting a change of scenery,” wrote Gorney. “That’s why others are still pursuing so heavily but the Tigers have such an excellent track record with in-state players and Mathews is so talented on the back end that LSU could be the spot.”

While Gorney has LSU as the No. 1 contender for Mathews, he has Florida as “1B”.

“If LSU is 1A then Florida is 1B and the Gators have a very real shot in Mathews’ recruitment,” says Gorney.

Clemson, Texas, Arizona State, and USC, in that order, round out Gorney’s rankings for Mathews.

There’s still a long way to go in this battle. And it’s clear the Tigers have some legitimate competition for the dynamic in-state recruit. But I’d be surprised if LSU isn’t able to secure a commitment from Mathews when it’s all said and done.

Adding a scouting report for new LSU commit Jacoby Mathews

  • by Andrew Ivins

Ed Orgeron's weekend got off to a good start on Friday as five-star safety Jacoby Mathews announced a verbal commitment to LSU over his social media accounts. Mathews, who the industry-generated 247Sports Composite pegs as the nation's No. 2 safety, picked the Tigers over Florida, Texas, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Alabama and plenty of others.

While Mathews is obviously ranked high, he's one of the more interesting prospects in the class of 2022 as he projects as a defender at the next level, but has spent much of the past two years playing primarily offense at Ponchatoula (La.) High. In most cases that would make for a difficult evaluation, but the team at 247Sports has been fortunate enough to size Mathews up at multiple camps and 7-on-7 tournaments over the past four months.

Below, is the scouting report I have added to Mathews' profile on 247Sports after getting a chance to watch him run around and then circle back on his film.

A big-framed athlete that looks more like a linebacker than he does a safety. Has spent the past couple of years doing a little bit of everything on Friday nights. Can get the job done as a run-first quarterback at the high school level, but future is on the defensive side of the ball. Changes directions extremely well for a player that could eventually carry 215 pounds or more. Fluid in the lower half and is able to open his hips and run. Takes sharp angles in coverage and has shown on tape that he can get to the deepest parts of the field when needed. Quick to read and diagnose. Aggressive when the ball is in the air and will use his core strength to outmuscle receivers. Didn’t get a ton of reps in the secondary as a junior due to offensive workload, but plays with a physical appetite and will try to lower his shoulder pads before running through a target. Tested well the winter before senior season posting strong numbers in both the vertical and broad jumps. Uses those explosive muscle fibers to throw down dunks on the hardwood. Could settle in as a big safety in college, but tweener body type suggests that he might ultimately be utilized as more of a box player. Will need to keep improving his craft over the next few years, but viewed by multiple college contacts as a future NFL player given how he moves. Should eventually start at the Power 5 level and could see meaningful snaps early on in his career as his skillset is conducive to slowing down up-tempo spread offenses.

As for a player comparison, I went with current NFL safety and former Alabama star Ronnie Harrison. The former four-star recruit also doubled as his high school's quarterback and was built much like Mathews at the same stage in his development. Harrison ended up playing three seasons for the Crimson Tide before being selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He's now with the Cleveland Browns where he earned a starting role in 2020.

Mathews could also be compared to former LSU safety JaCoby Stevens, who appeared in 42 games for the Tigers over the past four years. One trusted source at an SEC program seems to think that Mathews moves a little bit better than Stevens does, but agreed that Mathews could line up different spots in LSU's defense in hopes of creating turnovers and forcing punts.

Orgeron and LSU land all three Louisiana 5-stars

BySHEA DIXON 79 minutes ago

One of the biggest 5-star dominos in the country dropped on Friday when Louisiana safety Jacoby Mathews shut down his recruitment process and committed to LSU.

Mathews, who is ranked by the 247Sports Composite as both a five-star and the No. 30 overall prospect in the country, chose the Tigers over a top six that also included Florida, Texas, Clemson, South Carolina and Arizona State.

Mathews is the No. 2 ranked safety in the country and the top-ranked defensive prospect in Louisiana, and he joins a No. 3 ranked LSU class that now holds 13 commitments, including nine from the state of Louisiana.

Entering the summer months, Louisiana has three five-star prospects on the 247Sports Composite for the 2022 class, and all three are now committed to the Tigers.

St. Thomas More quarterback Walker Howard is the state’s highest-ranked prospect as the No. 20 recruit in the country and the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the class. Neville’s Will Campbell is the state’s No. 2 prospect, checking in seven spots behind Howard as the No. 27 recruit in the class and the No. 4 offensive tackle in the country.

Just 10 spots separate Mathews and Howard as the summer ahead of their senior seasons approaches, and no matter the shuffle among the trio between now and the final rankings ahead of National Signing Day in February 2022, all three are now committed to playing their college careers in purple-and-gold - which is another massive win for Ed Orgeronand Co.

“LSU really went out and locked down the three difference makers in the state,” 247Sports Director of Scouting Steve Wiltfong said. “These three are the guys you would be really upset about if you missed on them. And one big thing is that Coach O burns up the phone line as much as any coach in college football, and the parents and targets or “champion” of the recruitment outside of the kid, they have access to Coach O at all times like the recruits do. Coach O is the keeper of the culture and program, and one way he will keep LSU prominent in college football is how hard he works at the top of the recruiting food chain. LSU can always have staff change, but the top targets will always have that access to the head coach.”

The trio marks the first time in Orgeron’s tenure as head coach that he’s landed three in-state five-stars in one cycle.

LSU signed both five-stars in the 2021 class in defensive tackle Maason Smithand Sage Ryan, the Tigers inked the only five-star in 2020 with the addition of wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, both Louisiana five-stars in the 2019 cycle signed with LSU in cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. and running back John Emery Jr, and the 2018 classes lone five-star on the 247Sports Composite rankings was wide receiver Terrace Marshall, who is now set to enter the NFL Draft this offseason as a potential first-round pick out of LSU. There were no Louisiana five-stars in the 2017 class, which was Orgeron’s first as head coach in Baton Rouge.

For Mathews, the bond he built with Orgeron and the staff and the chance to get to stay home and represent the Tigers in a deep Louisiana cycle was too much to pass up.

“LSU, that’s the first offer, and of course it’s the home town team. I don’t like the teams to shy away from me because it’s the hometown school. Coach O hits me up like three times a week, him personally telling me he was the first to offer, and that’s a special feeling. I like how the depth chart is looking. They don’t have anyone committed (at safety) and I feel I can go there and ball out on their defense three years in a row and get to the league.”

LSUDad, that is a great read about the signing of Jacoby Matthews.  When O was named head coach, we had all heard he is a great recruiter, and nothing we have seen gives any other indication, he is a GREAT RECRUITER!

I spoke with Dad yesterday, in one of his rare "non-travel" days, and I said I was not pleased to hear recently that O did not even interview Pelini for the DC job.  That is a cardinal sin in the hiring process in my opinion.  You ALWAYS interview the candidate.  I would phone interview them first to see if they warranted a half day in-person interview, where at least 2 others would spend an hour with them.  O seemed to rely on Pete Carrol's feedback, but that was stale information.  People change, their priorities change as they age (I am sure you will all agree with that!), and you have to find out where that person is RIGHT NOW, not a few years ago.

That is my way of saying, I try to look at O objectively, and I see some high highs, and some lows.

It may be that his highest high is in recruiting, and that is a very good place to have your highest high.  Recruiting is the lifeblood of any college sports program.  You can hire an OC and DC to coach them up, but somebody has to get the kids to Tiger Town, and O is that man.  There are a lot of coaches who can recruit, but our head coach has to go up against Nick Saban from Alabama for every 5* kid from Louisiana and every other state around, not to mention Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, Dan Mullen, and soon Steve Sarkisian who has an excellent offensive pedigree.  That's a pretty damn tough bunch of competitors.

From what I can see, O is doing an EXCELLENT job of recruiting.
