Wiltfong's Whiparound: Coveted IMG prospects nearing decisions

LSU landed a commitment from Lake Charles College Prep running back TreVonte' Citizen on Monday, he announced on Twitter. The four-star in-state recruit becomes commitment No. 15 for the Tigers in the 2022 class, which is firmly in the Top 5 classes in the country.

Running backs coach Kevin Faulk and recruiting specialist Mason Smith helped key the commitment from Citizen, who took an official visit to LSU the last weekend of June after checking out Auburn, Texas and Texas A&M on official visits.

On the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, the 6-0, 217-pound back ranks as the No. 143 overall prospect in the nation, No. 11 running back nationally and No. 9 prospect in Louisiana. On 247Sports, Citizen, who owns offers from Auburn, Texas, Texas A&M, USC and others, ranks as the No. 201 overall prospect and No. 20 back in America.

Here's a look at his 247Sports scouting report from national recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks.

"Good build relative to the running back position. Owns college-ready size so lack of length is not much of a concern in regards to frame potential. Plays both ways as a running back and linebacker and produces solid numbers in each capacity. Profile would be great as an off-ball linebacker but physical tools definitely lean running back in the long term.

"Shows impressive initial burst. Accelerates naturally with urgency. At his best as a linear slasher or in one-cut situations. Runs hard and finishes runs. Generally runs with good pad level and leverage. Displays enough top-end play speed to provide a big-play threat. Also runs track. Personal bests are 11.31 in the 100 and 22.19 in the 200, the latter of which suggests good top-end speed in particular.

"Not a dart-and-dodge back, but shows enough close-quarters athleticism to make the first defender miss. Gears down to change direction. Can improve inconsistencies in contact balance. Track data adds context, but is limited and does not accompany any verified combine testing. Lacks desired pass-catching opportunities to this point. Limited production because of measured approach to carries, mostly as a result of two-way participation.

"On the bright side, enters college with very low mileage relative to the vast majority of running backs. Pure football player who projects to the Power Five level at running back with potential to become an impact starter."

Playing both ways for Lake Charles College Prep, Citizen totaled 615 yards and eight scores on just 62 carries while adding five receptions for 48 yards.

For track and field, Citizen ran an 11.33 100 and a 22.19 200 as a junior. He ran the third leg of Lake Charles College Prep's 4x200 relay that won gold at the May 2021 Louisiana 3A state meet and ran first leg of the 4x100 relay that placed second.

The commitments on board beyond Citizen are five-star Monroe (La.) Neville offensive tackle Will Campbell, three-star New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman offensive lineman Bo Bordelon, four-star New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr defensive tackle Tygee Hill, five-star Lafayette (La.) St. Thomas More quarterback Walker Howard, five-star Ponchatoula (La.) safety Jacoby Mathews, four-star Watkinsville (Ga.) Oconee County tight end Jake Johnson, four-star Lafayette (La.) Acadiana cornerbackLaterrance Welch, four-star New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr wide receiver Aaron Anderson, four-star Valdosta (Ga.) cornerback JaDarian Rhym, four-star New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman wide receiver AJ Johnson, Michigan kicker Nathan Dibert, three-star Shreveport (La.) Green Oaks wide receiver Decoldest Crawford, four-star Florida linebacker DeMario Tolan and three-star Lafayette Christian Academy lineman Fitzgerald West.

Mason Taylor, son of Dolphins great Jason Taylor, commits to LSU

SOUTH FLORIDA SUN SENTINEL
JUL 29, 2021 AT 10:48 AM

The son of one of the best Miami Dolphins players in the team’s history is headed to the Southeastern Conference.

St. Thomas Aquinas tight end Mason Taylor, the son of legendary Dolphins defensive lineman Jason Taylor and the nephew of former Dolphins linebacker great Zach Thomas, committed to LSU on Thursday afternoon.

“The coaching staff [was] on me every day about going there, talking to me about how they’d use me,” Taylor said. “Just built a really good relationship with the coaching staff there. It felt like home. When I went up there, everything was for me. They were just doing everything they could for me. I just liked the comfort.”

Taylor said he built a close relationship with LSU coach Ed Orgeron and graduate assistant and tight ends coach Derek Shay.

“They’re kind of down, short on tight ends right now, so the chance to play early is what they told me,” Taylor said.

The Raiders tight end also said getting the chance to play for an SEC program like LSU appealed to him.

“It’s going to be crazy,” Taylor said. “SEC — that’s where I feel like I belong. And Death Valley, that place gets loud, that place gets rowdy. So it’s going to be really fun and it’s going to be a really great experience.”

Two of Taylor’s former teammates at St. Thomas, offensive linemen Marcus Dumervil and Marlon Martinez, currently play for the Tigers, and he spoke to them when he visited the campus.

LSU Tigers lose commitment from 2022 safety Jacoby Mathews

On Friday morning it was bad news for the LSU Tigers on the recruiting front. Five-star safety in the 2022 class, Jacoby Mathews decommitted from the program. He was the No. 2 ranked safety according to 247Sports composite.

The announcement of his decommitment came from On3 Recruiting via Twitter. Mathews had the following statement:

First off, I want to thank the man above and the entire staff at LSU. To all the Tigers fans and commits, it will forever be love whether we get together or battle on Saturdays.

After deep consideration, my parents and I have thought a lot through and I have decided to decommit from Louisiana State University and re-open my recruitment.

Respect it, please and thank you.

With Mathews re-opening his commitment, there are other players that LSU can target other safeties on top of continuing to re-land Mathews. Other notable safeties with offers from the Tigers include the No. 1 safety Kamari Wilson, Xavier Nwankpa, and Bryce Anderson. Anderson is expected to commit to the Texas Longhorns.

BREAKING: Emery Jones commits to LSU

By Mike Scarborough
July 30, 2021

High four-star offensive guard Emery Jones‍ of Baton Rouge (La.) Catholic High has announced his verbal commitment to LSU.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Jones announces his commitment to LSU via Twitter.  He chose LSU over Florida State, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, Georgia, Penn St., Ole Miss and many others.

Jones pledge gives LSU 16 commitments for the class of 2022.  He is the fourth offensive lineman to commit to this years class and he’s without a doubt out one of the best guard prospects to come out of Louisiana this century.

In the month of June, Jones visited Florida State, Arkansas and Tennessee officially.  He also had a stand-out performance on one of Ed Orgeron’s camp days.

New LSU offensive line coach Brad Davis was recruiting Jones when he was at Arkansas so their relationship has been building for quite some time.

LSU Football Faces Critical Stretch in 2022 Recruiting Class With its Skill Position Players

Tigers have a nice variety of receivers, tight ends but work is far from done to keep class together

Evaluating the LSU tight end and wide receiver recruits provides a look into the future of the passing game, and the Tigers could really excel with the commitment of one more talented wide receiver.

LSU’s passing game averaged 401.6 yards passing during the 2019 national championship season, and 312.2 yards passing during the 2020 season. There’s been extremely talented players involved in the LSU passing attack like Justin Jefferson and Terrace Marshall playing for the Tigers, and LSU continues to search for players to continue in their footsteps.

Looking into the 2022 recruiting class, there are two tight ends and two wide receivers committed to the Tigers that will help keep the tradition going, and the chance to bring in one more local talent could provide LSU with another future group of pass catchers that light up scoreboards.

Jake Johnson

Vitals: 6’5”, 225-pounds

Position: Tight End

High School: Watkinsville (Ga.) High School

Recruitment: Committed to LSU

One of the nation’s top tight ends, Johnson was purposely listed first amongst this list because he’s much more than just a receiving tight end. The way Johnson moves out of a three-point stance is very natural and provides insight about his natural flexibility and athletic skills. He’s smooth.

Once Johnson goes into his route, he’s very difficult to defend with receiver-like movements and cuts. Combined with his frame, those skills make it hard for a defensive coordinator to find a defensive back or linebacker that matches up with Johnson. The Tigers have talented wide receivers in this class as well, but one could argue that Johnson is the most unique passing target from the 2022 recruiting class because of his combination of size and ability to move more like a 200-pound wide receiver than a traditional tight end.

Mason Taylor

Vitals: 6’4”, 230-pounds

Position: Tight End

High School: Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Saint Thomas Aquinas

Recruitment: Committed to LSU

Taylor’s role will likely be a combination of skills working with the other talented Tigers’ passing game targets. With the frame to play tight end, H-back, fullback or be a flex tight end, Taylor will be able to help each personnel package because of his own position flexibility. That’s first and foremost.

He’s already a consistent pass receiver and plays well against zone or man coverage. Depending on how big Taylor becomes, he could be used as an in-line blocker or move out wide much like Johnson will likely do the majority of the time.

Decoldest Crawford

Vitals: 6’1”, 180-pounds

Position: Wide Receiver

High School: Shreveport (La.) Green Oaks

Recruitment: LSU Commitment

Crawford could be compared to Jefferson in terms of recent LSU receivers. Because of Crawford’s hands, route running skills, and ability to make plays after the catch, any modern offense would love to place into the lineup. He’s simply an athlete that chose to play wide receiver and now he’s become a multi-faceted passing game threat.

Crawford would be another player that could find himself moving around into different positions. Whether it will be slot, outside or boundary, Crawford may find a consistent niche at any one of the three primary wide receiver spots. That also means opposing teams will have a hard time knowing how to stop the LSU commitment.

Aaron Anderson

Vitals: 5’10”

Position: Wide Receiver

High School: New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr

Recruitment: Committed to LSU

This young man is the jack rabbit that few defenders will be able to bring down with but one defender attempting to tackle Anderson in space. Speed and quickness represent Anderson’s strong suits. Once the football reaches his hands, the games begin.

A lock to be involved with LSU’s punt and kickoff teams down the line, Anderson will likely be a slot receiver for the Tigers. He will be a player that opposing teams need to focus on with a really talented cornerback in the slot or he will torch a defense. He’s just too quick off the line of scrimmage for a safety or linebacker to cover him. Combining Anderson with Crawford will be interesting as the Tigers can mix and match formations.

Now, one more talented passing game piece needs to be added. Will it be a local talent? There’s certainly one very good player to keep in mind.

Shazz Preston

Vitals: 6’1”, 190-pounds

Position: Wide Receiver

High School: Saint James (La.) High School

Recruitment: Took official visits to Southern California (June 4) and Texas (June 18) thus far. Has been active with unofficial visits as well, taking trips to Baton Rouge and Tuscaloosa during this summer. There’s a long way to go for Preston’s signature, and several programs possess a chance to land his talents.

5-star LSU football commit Walker Howard out 4-6 weeks with fractured fibula

Koki Riley
Lafayette Daily Advertiser

Five-star quarterback and LSU commit Walker Howard will be out for four to six weeks with a fractured left fibula, an injury he suffered in Friday night's 51-24 loss for St. Thomas More, according to Cougars athletics director Kim Broussard.

In the third quarter, Howard (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) was running with the ball at Ruston's 15 before getting tackled at the 5 near the sideline, which was when the injury occurred.

Howard could not put any weight on his leg after suffering the injury and did not return to the game.

The LSU commit is the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the nation for the Class of 2022 and the No. 1 recruit in the state. He committed to the Tigers in June of last year.

St. Thomas More holds a 2-3 record, with wins against Plaquemine and Neville. The Cougars lost to Madison Prep and Alexandria in the first two weeks of the season and will be at Westgate next week.

Five-star cornerback Denver Harris unofficially visiting LSU for Florida game

ByBILLY EMBODY 23 hours ago

JP Poll Week 7 Edition: Movement At The Top For First Time In 2021 (Late Kick Cut)

2022 Houston (Tex.) North Shore cornerback Denver Harris is taking an unofficial visit to LSU on Saturday for the Florida game, his family told 247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong. The five-star prospect is considering the likes of Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M and numerous others.

With former five-star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. headed to the NFL next season, the need for a top flight cornerback is huge and defensive backs coach Corey Raymond is keeping the Tigers in the mix even as rumors swirl about Ed Orgeron's job status.

The 6-1, 180-pound prospect ranks as the industry-generated 247Sports Composite's No. 9 overall prospect in the nation, No. 3 cornerback in the country and No. 2 prospect in Texas. On 247Sports, he ranks as the No. 22 overall prospect in the nation, No. 4 cornerback in the country and No. 5 prospect in the Lone Star State.

Harris took official visits this summer to Alabama, LSU and Texas. The Tide and Longhorns both hold 247Sports Crystal Ball picks in his recruitment.

Even after a knee injury sidelined him for the entire offseason and the beginning of the 2021 season, Harris has made sure to keep his spirits high and work on the things he knows he can in the meantime which includes being a huge vocal leader for his North Shore team.

"Being a real vocal leader on the sideline. I can actually say a few cuss words so I'm very high energized," Harris told 247Sports last month. "I try to keep everybody sane and everybody hyped at the same time."

After his strong junior season, Harris was named a first-team MaxPreps Junior All-American and was the District 21-6A Defensive Player of the Year. In 2019, he helped North Shore to a 15-1 record and second consecutive Texas 6A D-I state championship.

LSU commit Demario Tolan of Dr. Phillips happy with hiring of Brian Kelly

ORLANDO SENTINEL
DEC 04, 2021 AT 6:50 PM

Dr. Phillips linebacker Demario Tolan committed to LSU in July. He was content with his choice and ready to move on to the next level.

Then his path hit a bit of a hurdle when LSU parted ways with beloved head coach Ed Orgeron. Coach O was a big part of what drew Tolan to LSU, so when the raspy Cajun was no longer in the picture, Tolan started to waver a bit.

In stepped former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly and all was back in order for Tolan.

Thought this just happens at LSU?

Florida Gayturds see mass exodus of commitments following Billy Napier's hiring

Central Michigan has a higher-ranked recruiting class than Florida in December.

What the heck is going on in Gainesville?

Florida hired new head coach Billy Napier to replace Dan Mullen on November 28. Since then, Napier has been tasked with building a coaching staff along with preparing for the upcoming Early Signing Period. Like most of the coaches in the country, he has been on the recruiting trail visiting prospects throughout the week.

Napier met with quarterback commitment Nick Evers on Tuesday night. Shortly after their meeting, Evers chose to back off of his pledge to Florida. He still plans on signing with a school during the Early Signing Period. Evers was the second Gayturds' commitment to reopen his recruitment yesterday.

Wide receiver Chandler Smith flirted with decommitting whenever Mullen was let go in November. He made that decision official on Tuesday with a note on social media.

The attrition continued into Wednesday as one of the top wide receivers in the country decommitted from Florida. Jayden Gibson reopened his recruitment and is looking for a new home within the next week. It's possible that Florida State gets involved after finishing among the runner-ups before his original decision. We'll see if the Seminoles can get Gibson on campus this weekend.

Following his decommitment, Florida's 2022 recruiting class dropped from No. 40 to No. 69. Then came another.

Defensive lineman Francois Nolton committed to the Gayturds nearly 10 months ago in February 2021. On Wednesday evening, he became the fourth player to defect from UF's class in roughly 24 hours.

In total, Florida has lost five commitments since Napier was officially hired; Evers, Smith, Gibson, Nolton, and Terrance Gibbs. Running back Terrance Gibbs decommitted from the Gayturds on November 30.

Napier had some interesting comments on recruiting during his introductory press conference on Monday.

"I think our approach here, we’re going to be very patient,” Napier said. “I think I know everybody wants to pedal to the metal here and go a hundred miles an hour, but I think this the most important thing that we do — the people we get into the building, the staff, the players. So we’re going to evaluate the situation a little bit this week over the next 10 days or so. But you can expect us to be very conservative, very patient, trying to position ourselves for post-signing day to evaluate all the players that are left over, all the players in the transfer portal."

“And then, when we do have our entire staff and organization put together, position ourselves for some really strong weekends in January, and then try to close strong in February," Napier continued. "But the reality is you’re getting in the game and there’s like 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter. And I think the last thing we need to do here is make some mistakes. So we’ll probably — I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t sign many at all [in December], to be honest with you. But there may be a few out there that are willing to jump in here in the last minute."

The Florida Gayturds' 2022 class has dropped to No. 76 in the country according to 247Sports. That's in the same territory as Arkansas State, Central Michigan, and Northern Illinois.

There are still seven commitments remaining but based on recent history, that number will dwindle down in the near future.

Will Campbell(Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)

247Sports Composite: 5-star | 0.9840 | No. 32 Overall | No. 5 OT
Recruitment status: Committed to LSU
Measurables: 6-6 | 300
Player evaluation: Tall with above average length. Wears his mass well and owns terrific frame potential. Active feet set up contact and foster drive-blocking effectiveness. Flashes some nasty as a block-finisher and will take targets to the ground if possible. Displays encouraging movement ability in space that reflects in second-level efficiency. Reaches those second-level targets with relative ease. Combines functional mobility and strength as consistently effective reach-blocker. Arriving impact improved as a junior and also showed in flashes at point of attack. Owns a high ceiling as a pass-blocker thanks to frame and above-average foot quickness. Generally does not allow naturally high center of gravity negatively affect pad level and leverage. Consistency as a puncher can still improve. Also can trust his frame/reach more in initial extension, especially in pass pro. Looks to be among the top 2022 offensive tackle prospects. Projects to high-major level with long-term potential to reach the early rounds of the NFL Draft. – 247Sports Midlands Region Recruiting Analyst Gabe Brooks

Walker Howard | QB | St. Thomas More (La.)

247Sports Composite: 5-star | 0.9836 | No. 34 Overall | No. 5 QB
Recruitment status: Committed to LSU
Measurables: 6-1 | 195
Player evaluation: Adequate frame with lean build that should add some mass in college. Established a following as an elite camp performer early in high school career before taking over varsity starting duties. Has posted encouraging testing numbers early in career (4.76 40, 4.40 shuttle). Consistent, accurate passer to all levels. Steps into throws and gets great zip on balls to the short-to-intermediate range. Posted stellar production in breakout junior campaign. Threw a lot of reps while also valuing the ball, as evidenced by only one INT per 63 pass attempts (five in 316 throws). Not a true dual-threat but functionally mobile with ability to extend plays outside the pocket. Remains accurate on the move. Squares shoulders and fires even when on the run. Plenty of arm strength but still probably some juice to squeeze out at the top end, which should come with add physical mass/strength. Typically stays on top of the ball but will have one sail a bit every once in a while. Possesses a good QB pedigree. Seems quite polished relative to age and could be a particularly high-floor QB at the next level. Projects to high-major competition with long-term NFL Draft potential. – 247Sports Midlands Region Recruiting Analyst Gabe Brooks
NFL Draft projection: 2-3 Round (Day 2)
