Punter Peyton Todd of West Monroe is a LSU commitment

By Mike Scarborough
August 1, 2019

LSU's special teams has been very special over the years and it went next level with the addition of coach Greg McMahon.

McMahon arrived on the LSU coaching staff and found specialists Cole Tracy and Avery Atkins so he has an eye for great talent.

After months of scouting and contact with Class of 2021 punter Peyton Todd‍, the LSU offer arrived and the commitment was accepted.

“I’ve been in contact with Coach Mac, the special teams coordinator, for a couple months now within legal contact periods of course and when Coach O called my head coach yesterday morning I had already had my mind made up,” Todd said.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Todd gives LSU their second commitment for the class of 2021.

“LSU is where I’ve wanted to be my entire life and I dont see any other school changing my mind so why not take it?,” Todd said. “I’m really blessed to be presented this opportunity and I’m gonna do my best to make the most of it!”

LSU football in the mix for 5-star WR from west coast

LSU football is one of several programs in the mix to land a five-star wide receiver from Washington.

LSU football is hoping they can convince 2021 five-star wide receiver Emeka Egbuka to leave the west coast for Baton Rouge.

Egbuka, 6-foot-1/190 lbs from Steilacoom, WA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 7 overall player in the nation.

247Sports recruiting editor Brandon Huffman describes Egbuka as a player with “elite size and strength”, while noting that he is an “aggressive runner after the catch and elusive in the open field.

1.jpg?mode=stretch&connatiximg=true&scale=both&height=169&width=300

Huffman predicts that Egbuka will be a future first round selection in the NFL Draft.

The dynamic wide receiver recently told247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong that Ohio State, Clemson, Oregon, LSU, Stanford, Oklahoma, along with his home-state school Washington, are the programs recruiting him the hardest right now.

Egbuka told Wilftong that he speaks with LSU head coach Ed Orgeron “regularly”.

The Huskies could be hard to beat for Egbuka, but the elite wide receiver told Rivals last month that “location really isn’t a factor” in his recruitment. However, Egbuka mentioned that playing in front of a lot of people is key, which could make Baton Rouge enticing to him.

LSU appears to be on the verge of becoming the go to school for elite wide receivers. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Orgeron and his staff lure Egbuka away from Washington.

The Tigers currently have four players committed to their 2021 recruiting class, including four-star wide receiver Deion Smith.

Talking with a few high school coaches I know in the Houston/Cypress/Katy areas. LSU, O, Faulk and the staff, are hitting this area hard. A RB in this area is one. I’ll be making a practice this season, plus games, trying to see some of the talent locally.
Kevin Faulk will be making his rounds. Kevin is personable, having spent time with Tom Brady and the Pats, kids like this.
I like the part where O uses this opening by Kevin, to hire someone from the other side of the ball.

It seems a little slow in recruiting for 2021 class, compared to the Miles era.  It seems like by now, Les would have 6 or 7 commits and at least 15 by the end of June.  Maybe when you go after bigger fish and out of state fish, they take a little longer to make up their mind.  It will be good if this results in pulling in a higher quality class.

LSU Football: Recruiting analysts predict where 5-star DT will land

LSU football is hoping to land an elite 2021 five-star defensive tackle from Louisiana.

LSU football is one of several programs pursuing 2021 five-star defensive tackle Maason Smith.

Smith, 6-foot-5/316 lbs from Houma, LA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 2 defensive tackle in the nation.

The Louisiana native, who also holds offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Oklahoma (among numerous other schools), is the type of player who can anchor a defensive line.

247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks describes Smith as a versatile defender who is “strong at the point of attack” with the “tools to fit multiple roles/schemes”. Brooks also noted that Smith could be an early round NFL draft selection.

In other words, this is a player the Tigers definitely need to keep in-state.

Fortunately for LSU fans, two of the nation’s leading recruiting analysts are expecting Smith to land in Baton Rouge.

Rivals’ Chad Simmons and Sam Spiegelman recently made their predictionsfor Smith and they think he’ll sign with the Tigers.

Simmons and Spiegelman mentioned LSU head coach Ed Orgeron’s ability to keep elite defensive linemen in-state as the one of the main reasons they think the Tigers will sign Smith.

Smith, thanks to his unusual athleticism for a big man, has the potential to dominate games. He would be a perfect fit in Bo Pelini’s “attacking” 4-3 defense.

By the way, Smith isn’t the only elite 2021 recruit that Rivals is predicting LSU will land.

Simmons and Spiegelman also believe the Tigers will sign Kaine Williams, a four-star safety from Marrero, LA. Rivals noted that Williams is “always quick to return to Baton Rouge” and that Pelini “has Williams’ attention”.

It sounds like LSU is on the verge of landing another elite recruiting class.

Recruiting analyst predicts LSU football will land elite QB

2584fa0c7945d9e9c460744eec40f904?s=44&d=mm&r=gby Zach Ragan15h ago

One national recruiting analyst is predicting LSU football could land an elite 2021 QB in the not-so-distant future.

Rivals national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell is predicting some good news for LSU football.

Farrell said this week that he believes 2021 four-star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will end up committing to the Tigers.

Nussmeier had previously indicated he’d commit on April 18, but it’s unclear if those plans will change due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

But regardless of when Nussmeier commits, it won’t be shocking if it’s LSU.

That’s because Nussmeier, 6-foot-2/182 lbs from Flower Mound, TX, has a unique connection to the Tigers.

Nussmeier’s father was actually coached by Scott Linehan, LSU’s new passing game coordinator, in college at Idaho.

The younger Nussmeier told Rivals in February “He (Linehan) is a great coach and an even better person….I think he’s going to bring a great passing attack. I really like his identity on offense.”

Nussmeier is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 16 player in the state of Texas and the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the nation.

247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks describes Nussmeier as a player who has “good touch on timing routes and other deep throws outside the numbers”.

Brooks also noted that Nussmeier is “quick-footed in the short area and often makes first rusher miss to buy time” and has an “encouraging ability to throw on the run”.

Nussmeier tossed for 3,788 yards and 38 touchdowns as a junior at Marcus High School, which competes at the 6A level.

LSU is also in the mix for five-star quarterback Caleb Williams. It appears, however, that Williams is currently trending toward Oklahoma.

We have to get a top QB, we all know that was a barrier to us the last decade, till Burrow solved the issue for us, along with modernizing the offense.  The modernized offense will allow us to attract an elite signal caller.  And the other thing, QB has to be SMART.  It takes smarts to do what Burrow did, read the defense and know where and when to get the ball off.  And Burrow studied a lot.

170 pounds is awful small for a safety.  I liked guys like Ronnie Lott and LaRon Landry, both around 220.  But I thought Mathieu was too small to play safety in the NFL, but he does, and he got a super bowl ring to prove it.

As teams go more to the passing game, has the role of a safety evolved to a smaller faster guy who can help on astounding wide receiver talent, even at the tight end position.  That is what it appears to me.  But when a big back like Fournette gets loose in the secondary, he's going to have a field day.

At times, I never worry about size, you can play the position or you can’t. DBU has always hit well on those type players. This virus thing has taken a hit on recruiting, but LSU is real close on another kid.

Hope this clears up soon, we need to do lunch.

Elite 2021 cornerback explains what he loves about LSU football assistant Corey Raymond

LSU football is hoping to land an elite four-star cornerback from Dallas, TX.

LSU football was recently included in 2021 four-star cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem’s top eight schools.

One of the main reasons the Tigers were included?

The presence of LSU cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond.

Ibraheem recently told 247Sports “He’s (Raymond) a straight up dude and he doesn’t sugarcoat nothing”. The dynamic recruit added “He told me he’s going to get me in and he’s going to have to develop me and be patient with me.”

It’s not a surprise to hear that Ibraheem is a big fan of Raymond, who played for the Tigers from 1987-1991.

LSU’s cornerbacks coach is one of the best developers of talent in the secondary in college football. Raymond, who has coached at LSU since 2012, has developed stud players like Eric Reid, Tyrann Mathieu, Jamal Adams, Greedy Williams and Donte Jackson, just to name a few.

Raymond is also a tremendous recruiter, which is obvious from Ibraheem’s comments.

The Tigers were wise this offseason to hand Raymond a new contract. In January, LSU gave Raymond a three year extension. The contract came not long after Raymond turned down a job offer from Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M.

Raymond’s new contract came with a new title as well. He’s now the Tigers’ recruiting coordinator, in addition to serving as cornerbacks coach.

As for Ibraheem, the nation’s No. 9 cornerback, it’s easy to see why LSU wants the Dallas native in Baton Rouge.

Ibraheem is described by 247Sportsmidlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks as a “high-major cornerback prospect with terrific build for the position”. Brooks also says Ibraheem is “raw but owns great physical traits that could give him an NFL Draft ceiling”.

The four-star defensive back isn’t sure when he’ll commit. He’s still planning to take a few more visits before he makes his decision.

LSU currently has five players committed to their 2021 recruiting class.

2021 Receiver Cristian Dixon Talks Possibility of Joining Teammate, LSU Commit Raesjon Davis in Baton Rouge

Dixon talks most recent visit to LSU and why he loves the culture Ed Orgeron is building
By Glen West , Apr 13, 2020
YpR1cq79-720.jpg

Meter Dei High School in Los Angeles is considered to be one of the hubs of college football recruiting. In the last two classes alone, the Tigers have received commitments from five-star cornerback Elias Ricks of the 2020 class and five-star linebacker Josh White of the 2021 class.

Now LSU is turning its attention to another member of the 2021 class that plays at Meter Dei, four-star receiver Cristian Dixon. At 6-foot-2, 187 pounds, Dixon is currently the No. 33 ranked receiver of the 2021 class and holds nearly 20 offers from Division I schools.

A few of the programs showing Dixon the most interest at this time are California, Oregon State, Michigan, USC and of course LSU. Of those schools, the only visit he has planned currently is to Baton Rouge in the fall to catch LSU vs Alabama.

Most recently, Dixon and Davis took a visit to Baton Rouge on March 7, where they were able to hang out with Ricks for the weekend and experience more of an inside look at the program. The two were able to catch LSU's first spring practice of 2020 and Dixon said what stood out to him the most, is the competition between all of the players.

"LSU is known for being DBU so you can definitely feel the competition between the receivers and the defensive backs," Dixon said. "You've gotta show up and you've gotta go hard."

Dixon said Ricks and Davis don't try to force any decisions on him but rather tell him about why they chose LSU and why it'd be a great fit for him.

"It's just all love, there's no better place to develop and get you ready for the next level," Dixon said. "Ultimately that's the goal, to go to the league and LSU is going to prepare you for that and prepare you for life really."

Ricks attended IMG Academy for his senior season of high school so Dixon was never able to play with him. He did spend last year playing with Davis and the two are preparing for a state championship in their final season.

"We just want to win a state championship and go out with a bang senior year," Dixon said. "I really want that state championship and that's something we're both striving for."

In addition to leaning on words of encouragement from Davis and Ricks, Dixon has made sure to stay in touch with multiple members of the LSU staff throughout his recruiting process. Coach Ed Orgeron, receivers coach Mickey Joseph and passing game coordinator Scott Linehan are all coaches he's either communicated with or met.

"I know he [Linehan] was in the league for a long time so I know he definitely has a different perspective of looking at things," Dixon said. "Coach Mickey has basically told me that 2021 is a big class and that they need four or five receivers coming out because Ja'Marr and Terrace should be gone."

One of the biggest preaching points Orgeron wanted to hammer home with Dixon is that the train isn't slowing down. LSU wants to maintain that championship status and it's bringing in players like Dixon that keep the Tigers at the top of the mountain.

"The culture's changing and they want to be a powerhouse for a long time," Dixon said. "LSU is continuing to change itself and keeps leveling up. They definitely make you feel wanted."

Between past and present LSU stars at the receiver position, Dixon said the most exciting part about potentially playing for the Tigers would be living up to the standard set by those before him.

"Ja'Marr [Chase] won the Biletnikoff, Odell [Beckham] and Jarvis [Landry] went there so there are definitely ballers and you gotta live up to that standard," Dixon said. "You gotta work every day and you gotta come in and show them that you can live up to they hype."

Dixon is making sure to put in that work seven days a week as he strives to improve on his route running, releasing from the defensive backs, yards after the catch and making people miss.

"I feel I'm really good at the tough catches, the catches that most people aren't supposed to come down with. I feel like if I can continue to improve on some of the more technical parts of the game, I'll see a big jump in productivity," Dixon said.

No guarantee, but I'm guessing that the kids from Mater Dei are bright and of sound character.

Mater Dei at a Glance

  • 99% College Acceptance   - 139 National Merit Scholars   - 81% Of Students On The Honor Roll    - 6MIL+ In Financial Aid

Any way you slice it, that's a damn impressive high school academically.  As a college football coach, I'd like to be able to recruit from there.  If the kid can play football well enough, you probably won't have to worry about him getting arrested, again, no guarantee.  Or making his grades.

That is impressive and it looks like a great school.

I assume those are historic, aggregate totals as any school that had 139 National Merit Scholors in a single year would make national news.

For comparison, Jesuit in New Orleans typically has around 20 or more National Merit Scholors every year and had 35 National Merit Scholors in 2018 alone. (Over the past 10 years, Jesuit graduates have received over $220 million in university scholorships.) Mater Dei has about 800 more students (2177) than Jesuit (1372).

Where Mater Dei exceeds Jesuit is that Mater Dei has co-ed enrollment...I spent 5 years (8-12) at Jesuit where the only girls in sight were outside of the prison yard.

In recruiting and player development, the contrast between a physically talented and high character kid, say from Mater Dei, and a poor kid from the inner city, can be interesting.  In terms of work ethic, the inner city or country raised poor kid probably has more incentive to work out and succeed, because that is probably his best shot, maybe his only shot, to pull himself up out of the ranks of the poor and make some real money.  A bright kid from Mater Dei has more avenues to success, he can be a pharmacist, dentist, teacher, engineer, anything he wants.  If football doesn't work out, he can just do something else.  I like to see us recruit from a Mater Dei, but I wonder if kids who don't come from such a great background might not have more incentive to develop themselves.  As Joe Burrow said about his time at LSU, and this was in 2018 before he became famous, "there is no plan B".  For him, it was football or bust.  Of course we know he is a smart guy and could have done other things, bottom line, he LOVED football and that is what he really wanted to do.  He wanted to play for a natty, and develop himself to get a shot in the NFL.  SO, there are also some guys who just love it and are motivated by the game itself.

The player at LSU now that I enjoy watching play and be interviewed is JaMarr Chase.  I don't know his motivation, but he sure seems motivated to improve, and he improved a LOT from his freshman to soph. year.  But he plays with a lot of joy, really seems to enjoy himself while he is out there.  After beating Clemson they talked to JaMarr on the SEC network and asked him what he thought about being single covered by Clemson's best DB, and he said when he saw he was going to get single coverage he smiled REAL BIG and excitedly said "man, I was licking my chops!!!".  I thought it was the best line of the night, a kid who had really enjoyed himself.

USC is by no means a slam dunk however. Foreman has no issues leaving home, which is obvious since he already committed to a school on the other side of the country once before. LSU will make a big push and we know Foreman and Tiger commit Raesjon Davis are close and would love to play together in college as well. Davis had already been heavily recruiting Foreman to LSU for months.

Agree Herb, LSU has done this, getting a high school teammate to give a verbal.
2022 season:

JoJo Earle is the second player on Aledo's roster to commit to LSU. He joins fellow four-star Bryan Allen, one of the Tigers' early pledges in the 2022 class.

I'm no expert on recruiting, but the credentials of the commits, and the kids with LSU in their top 10, its looking stronger than recent years, IMO.

Geaux Tigers!

I’ll agree, right now, LSU is the household name. When LSU sends a letter, makes a call, comes to visit, you know that you are an elite player. LSU can continue this trend. Enjoy the moment, hope it lasts a while.
