Chris Hilton Jr. who stands just under 6' high jumped 7' 1/4"  He can high jump himself with a foot to spare!!!!  Get the man a jump ball in the endzone!!!!

Hilton cleared 7 feet, ¼-inch on his second attempt to set a meet record. The jump also tied the Carl Maddox Field House record for high-schoolers and is currently the nation’s top indoor mark.

Ed Orgeron explains how LSU will manage its roster as signing day, transfer decisions loom

Keith Farner | 32 minutes ago

At a press conference on Tuesday to introduce LSU’s new defensive assistants to the media, coach Ed Orgeron addressed roster management issues as National Signing Day is set for Wednesday and transfer decisions are likely to follow into the spring.

“We have two solid commitments right now,” Orgeron said. “We have a couple that we’re 50/50 with. It could go either way. We’ll see how it goes tonight. I also want to keep a couple open for transfers or graduate at need positions.”

One of those positions is linebacker, he said. But the best player available is always welcome.

“It doesn’t hurt to have maybe two or three scholarships to fill with transfers at specific needs,” Orgeron said.

LSU’s class is currently ranked No. 3 in the SEC and No. 4 in the country, according to 247Sports, as the Tigers had nine early enrollees who signed in December.

New linebackers coach Blake Baker, previously the defensive coordinator at Miami, said this position was the only one he would have left Miami for, and is excited to recruit in-state prospects to LSU. Baker agreed that the linebacker position has evolved in recent years and he explained what he’s looking for in a recruit.

“First thing I always want to look for is toughness, are they tough?,” he said. “You want them to have good length, good speed, they’ve got to be able to play in space. The ability to make open-field tackles and then high character guys. I really believe that if a guy’s willing to come in and work, take care of his business, he’s going to be a really great player for you one day.”

I hope Brian Thomas takes note that Arik Gilbert's departure would likely mean he'd get fed the ball early and often.

Brian Thomas signs with LSU!!!

WR, 6' 4", 185, Dandy Don had him ranked the #4 player in the state.  LSU signed all 5 of the top ranked recruits in the state, a great recruiting year.  I am not sure if this will elevate the overall class rank of LSU, but we were top 5 before this signing.  That still leaves LSU with 2 spots unfilled, and word was O wanted a LB and an OL out of the transfer portal.

This recruit boiled down to a battle between LSU, A&M and Bama, and I am glad the good guys won this one.  Thomas said that when he announced his choice at his high school, O did not know where he was going.  Said he spoke to O yesterday.

BREAKING: Brian Thomas commits to LSU

BySHEA DIXON 45 minutes ago

LSU entered National Signing Day a week ago with a top five class, and the Tigers left the day ranked No. 4 on the 247Sports Team Rankings with three scholarship spots still available.

On Tuesday, one of those spots was filled when LSU landed a verbal commitment from four-star Brian Thomas Jr., who is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 9 wide receiver prospect in the entire country. He's a consensus Top 100 overall prospect on the 247Sports rankings and the 247Sports Composite.

The commitment pushed LSU over Georgia in the 247Sports Team Rankings, and now the Tigers have the No. 3 class in the country behind only Alabama and Ohio State.

It's massive news for an LSU program that is coming out of a 5-5 season, and now the staff has added a fifth wide receiver to the class. LSU previously signed Chris Hilton, Deion Smith, Malik Nabers and Jack Bech as part of December's Early Signing Period.

"I think with just the physical gifts, Rueben Randle is a pretty good comparison," Walker High head coach Chad Mahaffey told the Geaux247 staff. "Brian has maybe got a little more natural explosion and physicalness off the ball. Rueben was a really smooth athlete and really built up. Definitely a little bit of differences, but again, that kind of guy of having the size -- not a skinny kid, he's got a physique and can kind of do it all. Brian made some big plays for us defensively too. He helps in all three phases for sure."

When it came to reeling in a commitment from Thomas, it was all hands on deck for the staff in Baton Rouge.

LSU wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph, running backs coach and area recruiter Kevin Faulk, offensive analyst Carter Sheridan and head coach Ed Orgeron were all among the coaches keeping tabs on the state's No. 2 overall prospect over the past year-plus, which went a long way towards the Tigers reeling in the talented in-state prospect.

"They got a good school state school wise, education wise," Thomas said. "Top notch locker rooms, everything is top notch. Good school, I mean phenomenal atmosphere and good coaches all of that, and National Champions."

Thomas picked LSU over a double-digit offer list that had been narrowed down to three teams, with the Tigers joined by Texas A&M and Alabama.

As a junior in 2019, Thomas recorded 75 catches for 1,272 yards and 17 touchdowns, making him one of the most productive playmakers. As a senior this past fall, he caught 30 passes for 507 yards and seven touchdowns.

Here's what 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks said about Thomas as a prospect, comparing him to former Baylor star and New York Jets rookie Denzel Mims.

"Tall, long-framed outside receiver with functional athleticism to move around the formation. Ample frame space to add needed mass in college. Basketball player who has reported D-I offers. Athleticism and ball-winning ability reflect basketball bounce. Shows good body control and timing in high-pointing situations. Dangerous red-zone weapon who can win balls over defenders. Displays good initial quickness in first lateral move to foster impressive run-after-catch ability. Opens it up as a long-striding speed-builder downfield. Owns a large catch radius and generally keeps the ball away from his body as a catcher. Huge production as a junior, but dipped as a senior. Played fewer games but per game averages noticeably declined. Can better leverage defenders into breaks as a route-runner. One of the top couple of wideouts in a stellar in-state class in Louisiana. Projects as a multi-year high-major starter with long-term early-round NFL Draft potential."

LSU jumps Georgia for No. 3 spot in 247Sports Composite 2021 team rankings

BySONNY SHIPP 2 hours ago

LSU ended National Signing Day with the No. 4 recruiting class for 2020 in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Team RankingsEd Orgeron's 22-man class edged out Clemson for that fourth spot by a narrow .17, trailing only Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia in order.

The Tigers added their 23rd commitment on Tuesday when the nation’s No. 13 wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. picked LSU over Texas A&M and jumped Georgia for the No. 3 spot in the Composite’s recruiting rankings.

LSU increased its point total from 291.37 points to 295.61 and surpassed Kirby Smart’s 20-man group by 1.06 points. That also gave the Tigers their third-best score during the modern recruiting era, dating back to 2002 in the Composite, behind only the 2014 (299.29) and 2020 (298.62) classes.

It marks Orgeron’s third consecutive top 5 class, with his 2022 haul already ranked No. 3 with nine commitments on board.

Thomas waited nearly a week after signing day to decide and now gives the Tigers five receivers. He joins Deion SmithChris HiltonMalik Nabers and Jack Bech to give the Tigers one of the best group of wide outs in the country.

Along with his two finalists, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Auburn, and many others offered Thomas, who the Composite ranks as the No. 88 prospect overall in America. After landing the state’s No. 4 prospect overall in Thomas, LSU pulled in six of the state’s top eight prospects in the Composite, with only Destyn Hill and Kaine Williams signing with Florida State and Alabama, respectively. LSU offered both early in their recruitment, but neither had a spot in the class when they were ready to make their commitment.

LSU is in the midst of one of its most successful three-year runs in recruiting. The only stretch that was more impressive was 2014-2016 when the Tigers landed a pair of No. 2 classes in 2014 and 2016, and a No. 5 class in 2015.

I saw Brian Thomas high school coach, he was stoked that he chose LSU.  They asked the coach what high school player Thomas reminded him of, and he said Ruben Randall.  If Brian contributes to LSU the way that Randall did, this would be a significant signing for sure.

I saw the same comparisons and agree with you 100% on the impact this kid could have if those comparisons are true.

I guess the question that time will answer is if Ruben Randall is his floor or his ceiling.

I'm hoping for the former.

Meet LSU's 2021 recruiting class

ByBILLY EMBODY Feb 9, 2:00 PM

LSU currently has 23 signees on board for the 2021 recruiting class, which ranks No. 3 overall in the country and No. 2 class in the SEC, according to the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting rankings. LSU added an elite in-state prospect almost a week after National Signing Day when four-star Walker (La.) wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. committed and signed with LSU in a ceremony.

Thomas put pen to paper at his announcement, giving LSU a cherry on top to a loaded wideout class for wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph. Thomas picked LSU over Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M and others. The 6-4, 190-pound in-state standout ranks on the 247Sports Composite as the No. 88 overall prospect in the country, No. 13 overall wideout in the nation and No. 4 prospect in Louisiana. 247Sports is even higher on him, ranking him inside the Top 10 wideouts nationally.

Ed Orgeron & Co. have signees from 11 different states with quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, offensive tackle, offensive guard, defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, cornerback, safety and a specialist being the positions addressed.

Now, with two spots remaining, LSU will look to address needs via the NCAA Transfer Portal like linebacker or offensive line. Here's the rundown on the rest of the signees for Orgeron & Co with Thomas now on board.

In-state punter Peyton Todd out of West Monroe (La.) was the first commitment for Orgeron in the class and signed during the early signing period. The 6-5, 210-pound punter ranks as the No. 1 punter in the country on 247Sports. He's now on campus for spring workouts with the Tigers, looking to start right away.

LSU landed one of the top defensive linemen in the state of Florida when Ocala Vanguard School lineman Bryce Langstonannounced he had signed with the Tigers. The 6-3, 255-pounder is the No. 158 overall prospect in the country, No. 12 strong-side defensive end in the nation and No. 23 overall prospect in Florida on the 247Sports Composite. The Gators were the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite before LSU's late push came to fruition. Auburn, Oklahoma and others also offered the four-star prospect. He'll enroll in June.

National Signing Day saw St. James (La.) defensive end Saivion Jones and Niceville (Fla.) offensive lineman Kimo Makaneoleput pen to paper with the Tigers. Jones, a long-time commit, wanted to sign with his teammates while Makaneole flipped from Florida State on New Year's Eve to add a second offensive lineman in the class for LSU.

On 247Sports, Jones is the No. 131 overall prospect in the country, No. 10 weak-side defensive end and No. 5 overall prospect in Louisiana while Makaneole is the No. 23 overall offensive guard in the nation and No. 52 overall prospect in Florida. Both will enroll in June.

The headliner is five-star defensive tackle Maason Smith, who picked the Tigers over Alabama, Georgia, Miami and others. On the 247Sports Composite, the 6-5, 315-pounder ranks as the No. 19 overall prospect in the country, No. 2 defensive tackle in the nation and No. 1 prospect in Louisiana. The Tigers led the 247Sports Crystal Ball wire to wire on this in-state prospect, picking up the first pick back in January 2019. In January, Smith arrived on campus to begin work as a Tiger, enrolling early to pursue early playing time. Smith is the highest-ranked prospect in the class.

Going into Florida, LSU went after Pensacola Catholic defensive back Damarius McGhee, who was committed to Tennessee earlier this fall, but defensive backs coach Corey Raymond started his push for the 6-1, 163-pound prospect. Eventually, LSU picked up the 247Sports Crystal Ball edge and landed him in December in a nationally televised announcement. On 247Sports, he's a Top 100 prospect, landing at No. 89 overall in the country, the eighth-ranked cornerback nationally and the No. 13 overall prospect in the Sunshine State. He's the No. 187 overall prospect in the country and No. 13 ranked cornerback nationally on the 247Sports Composite. Alabama, Georgia, Miami, USC and others were among his offers.

Another impressive land was out of Alabama, where running backs coach Kevin Faulk pushed for the four-star running back out of Hewitt-Trussville, Armoni Goodwin. A consensus Top 100 prospect, the 5-8, 190-pound back averaged nearly 10 yards per carry as a senior coming off a torn ACL. Goodwin decommitted from Auburn in December and LSU became the team to beat right away. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 79 overall prospect in America, No. 5 running back in the nation and No. 4 overall prospect in Alabama. In the 2020 season, Goodwin carried 152 times for 1,424 yards and 18 scores to help his team to a second round appearance in the Alabama 7A playoffs. He followed that up this month by winning the state 60-meter dash, setting a record with a 6.82 60.

In the state of Louisiana, Orgeron & Co. opted to push for yet another Lafayette area standout over the final weeks leading up to the early signing period. Southside High standout Malik Nabers, who had to sit his entire senior season after transferring, committed and signed in December after being a Mississippi State pledge since July. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 149 overall prospect in the country, No. 19 overall wideout in the nation and No. 6 prospect in Louisiana. Nabers committing gave the Tigers five of the top six prospects in Louisiana on 247Sports before Thomas made it six-for-six.

Going into the junior college ranks, LSU inked an instant impact player in junior college linebacker Navonteque Strong. The Mississippi Gulf Coast standout averaged just shy of 10 tackles and two tackles for loss a game this season, helping him rank as the nation's consensus No. 1 junior college inside linebacker. The 6-0, 230-pounder was committed to Mississippi State since June, but LSU offered in late November and began to chip away at the Bulldogs' edge in his recruitment. Arkansas, Florida State, Texas Tech and others offered this fall as well. He enrolled at LSU in January to begin immediately competing for playing time in Daronte Jones' defense.

LSU went national for a key signee at safety when Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway standout Derrick Davis Jr. The four-star prospect enrolled early at LSU after picking the Tigers over Ohio State and Penn State. According to the 247Sports Composite, the 6-1, 195-pound prospect is the No. 64 overall prospect in the nation, No. 4 overall safety in the country and No. 4 overall prospect in Pennsylvania.

"Safety build with body type to carry 210 pounds. Physical, tough and plays nasty," his 247Sports scouting report. "Has man-cover ability. Mentality to play in box and runs well enough to play free safety. Nickel ability. Capable blitzer. Instinctual player who tracks ball well. Good change of direction. Strong on jams and re-routes well. Shows good acceleration and closing speed. Strong tackler."

Lafayette (La.) St. Thomas More wide receiver/tight end Jack Bech, who was teammates with 2022 LSU quarterback commit Walker Howardcommitted right after another Lafayette area star on Nov. 1. Bech, who was committed to Vanderbilt earlier in the process, opted to stay home to play for the Tigers. According to the 247Sports Composite, the 6-2, 215-pound pass catcher ranks as the No. 57 overall wide receiver in the nation and No. 11 overall prospect in Louisiana. He committed to LSU over fresh offers from the likes of Mississippi State, Notre Dame, TCU, Texas and others. He'll enroll in June.

Lafayette Christian five-star safety Sage Ryan, committed to LSU over Alabama and Clemson on Halloween. There wasn't much drama after that as he signed in December. The nation's No. 2 safety was an Alabama lean entering the week leading up to his announcement, but a push by LSU kept him in the state of Louisiana, a massive recruiting win for Ed Orgeron & Co. On the 247Sports Composite, he's the No. 29 overall prospect in the nation and No. 2 overall prospect in Louisiana. His cousin is LSU running backs coach Kevin Faulk while his uncle is Trev Faulk, another former Tiger and his current coach at LCA. He's the second highest-rated LSU commitment in the class and will enroll in June.

New Roads (La.) Catholic of Pointe Coupee safety Matthew Langlois committed towards the end of October as a part of a major run of in-state prospects. Langlois became a four-star prospect on 247Sports thanks to a huge senior year. He reeled in an LSU offer early in his season because of that showing. Notre Dame also offered in October just before he committed to the Tigers. He'll enroll in June as a part of the talented group of safeties brought in. On 247Sports, he's ranked as the No. 23 overall safety in the country and No. 11 overall prospect in the state of Louisiana.

Olive Branch (Miss.) tight end Jalen Sheadcommitted on Aug. 30 and never wavered, giving LSU its first tight end in the 2021 class. Alabama, Kansas State, South Carolina and others offered the 6-4, 240-pounder. Shead's former teammate is LSU offensive lineman Xavier Hill, who took Shead with him on a visit to Baton Rouge as a recruit that got him interested in LSU in a big way. On the 247Sports Composite, Shead ranks as the No. 52 overall tight end in the nation and No. 14 overall prospect in Mississippi.

July was a big month for LSU as Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic linebacker Greg Penn III, who picked the Tigers over Alabama, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and others, made his pledge on July 12. 247Sports ranks Penn as the No. 18 inside linebacker in the nation and No. 12 overall prospect in Maryland. According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, Penn comes in as the No. 212 overall prospect in the country, No. 13 inside linebacker in the nation and No. 10 overall prospect in Maryland. He'll enroll in June in Baton Rouge.

There was some thought for Zachary (La.) wideout Chris Hilton signing late with the Tigers, but he and his family opted to ink early after some talks with the LSU staff. The four-star prospect picked the Tigers over Alabama, Georgia and others in the summer. 247Sports ranks Hilton as the No. 57 overall prospect in the nation, No. 5 wideout in the country and No. 4 overall prospect in Louisiana. According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, Hilton comes in as the No. 78 overall prospect in the country, No. 11 wide receiver nationally and No. 3 overall prospect in Louisiana.

In June, LSU landed an elite offensive tackle in Clarkston (Mich.) lineman Garrett Dellinger, who picked the Tigers over Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and others. According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, Dellinger ranks as the No. 90 overall prospect in the country, No. 12 overall offensive tackle and No. 5 overall prospect in Michigan. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 95 overall prospect nationally, No. 13 offensive tackle in the country and No. 5 prospect in Michigan. After signing early in December, the 6-5, 280-pound lineman enrolled in January with hopes of competing right away for playing time on James Cregg's offensive line.

The first running back commit came from Cincinnati (Ohio) Roger Bacon running back Corey Kiner, a 5-10, 205-pound back who rushed for 1,869 yards and 34 total touchdowns as a senior on just 168 carries, good for an 11.1 yards per carry average. He's the No. 159 overall prospect, No. 7 overall running back in the country and No. 7 overall prospect in Ohio on the 247Sports Composite. Kiner picked the Tigers over the likes of Cincinnati, Florida, Ohio State and others in mid-May. Running backs coach Kevin Faulk made him a priority from the start, allowing the Tigers to win him over. To cap his record-setting career in Ohio, he was named Mr. Football in the state of Ohio.

Flower Mound (Tex.) Marcus quarterback Garrett Nussmeier picked the Tigers over Baylor, North Carolina, Texas, Texas A&M and others in early May. On the 247Sports Composite, the four-star prospect ranks as the No. 83 overall prospect nationally, No. 9 pro-style quarterback in the country and No. 14 overall prospect in the Lone Star State. Nussmeier led his Marcus team to an undefeated regular season record as a senior before a non-throwing hand injury ended his high school career early. The early enrollee likens his game to former LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow.

"Put 9's tape on from LSU last year. That's how I play," Nussmeier told 247Sports this fall. "That's the level I hope to aspire to play at one day, but that's the guy I feel like, honestly, my game models after a lot. I think that's why LSU's coaching staff was so drawn to me I believe. My job is just to go play. It just kinda happens naturally."

Atlanta (Ga.) Hapeville Charter outside linebacker Zavier Carter signed early after he committed to the Tigers over offers from Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Oklahoma, Tennessee and others to kick off May. A 6-4, 193-pound edge rusher, Carter ranks on the 247Sports Composite as the No. 214 overall prospect in the nation, No. 11 outside linebacker nationally and No. 19 overall prospect in Georgia. He enrolled early in January to start his LSU career.

"Long but skinny athlete that plays out of position in high school and will need to show the capacity for weight gain," his 247Sports evaluation reads. "Plays defensive end but is a standup pass rusher or more likely an off-ball linebacker at the next level. Uses hands effectively to maximize length and keep blockers off his body. Good reactive quickness. Slippery as a pass rusher. Good motor in pursuit."

To cap April, LSU landed a commitment from Texarkana (Tex.) Pleasant Grove defensive end Landon Jackson, who picked the Tigers over Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M, USC and others. On 247Sports, the 6-6, 240-pounder ranks as the No. 109 overall prospect nationally, No. 7 weak-side defensive end and No. 18 overall prospect in Texas. On the 247Sports Composite, Jackson comes in as the No. 125 overall prospect and No. 8 weak-side defensive end. Unfortunately for Jackson, his senior year was cut short due to an ankle injury suffered in practice. He's in Baton Rouge continuing to rehab as an early enrollee.

A massive land out of Mississippi, four-star wide receiver Deion Smithcommitted to the Tigers in December 2019 over the likes of Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and others. LSU flipped him from the Bulldogs and held on to him after a late push from the Rebels to keep him in the class. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 66 overall prospect in the country, No. 8 overall wide receiver in the nation and No. 1 overall prospect in Mississippi. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite slots him at No. 69 overall in the country and at ninth nationally among wideouts. He finished at Jackson Academy after Provine High's season was canceled, starring as a senior. He enrolled early at LSU in January.

We've got one spot left, what is our greatest need.  O said he was looking for a LB (got one) and an o-line.  However, all of our o-linemen are coming back for this season, which we didn't plan on, we could have lost 3 of them.  I don't think o-line is that great a need.  I think we should look for another LB, we're pretty thin there.

What do you think our greatest need is now for that last spot?

It’s better at times to sign a OL at 285 lbs. than one at 340lbs. Removing weight at times is harder than getting them to add weight and muscle.

That makes sense to me.  And with a tackle, you need an athletic dude that has the quickness to deal with fast athletic outside linebackers that are terrors on the pass rush.  If a tackle is huge and strong, but is not agile and quick, those quick pass rushers will run by him.  It was said that Les used to recruit guards and convert them to tackles, and it worked until we played u know who, and their pass rushers could get to our QB.

We have needed some more athletic offensive tackles, and O looks to be improving that recruiting.  But, from what I see, it is one of the rarer skillsets, it seems much easier to find a guard than a tackle on the o-line.  Kind of like elite cornerbacks.

I'm not sure with the 3 safeties we already have that he'd come to LSU but you never know.

It's a question whether he'd come, and a question whether we need to take 4 safeties in this class.  But, we did seem thin on quality safeties last season, so maybe 4 would work for the next three year run.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - It’s fitting that in an unprecedented seasons like 2020 we witness the first ever defensive player to ever win the prestigious Warrick Dunn Award as St. James defensive end, Saivion Jones took home the honors.

Jones is one of only three players to strictly play on the defensive side of the ball.

A football season like any other and one that many thought might not even happen due to the COVID-19 finally got going in in early October.

Nominees and the winner for the Warrick Dunn Award must display the productivity on the playing field along with the intangibles like character, selflessness, and sportsmanship that Dunn exhibited over his long and successful playing career.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end terrorized quarterbacks and offensive lineman all season in route to earning all-state first team honors as a senior and was named Louisiana’s Class 3A Defensive MVP.

Jones had 75 tackles and 10 sacks in an abbreviated 2020 season, a year after he helped the Wildcats to a state title and a perfect 15-0 season with 103 tackles.

Among them 13 tackles for loss plus 13 sacks to go with 25 quarterback hurries, which earned him another state MVP and 4-star rating among recruits.

The LSU signee was one of the top players in the state according to 247Sports has Jones ranked as the No. 5 overall player in Louisiana. The state’s top six players all signed with LSU for the class of 2021.

Jones was a highly coveted recruit and chose the Tigers over offers from Florida, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and many others.

During 11 seasons in the NFL with the Tampa Bucs and Atlanta Falcons Dunn enjoyed a phenomenal career eclipsing the 10,000-yard mark in rushing, but what he may be best known for his Home for the Holidays program, which provides single working mothers with brand new furnished homes in Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Tallahassee, and Tampa.

Dunn’s mother, the late Betty Smothers, was a single parent and an officer with the Baton Rouge Police Department. She was working an extra late-night security assignment when she was shot to death while he was still a student-athlete. Dunn has tried to honor her memory with his performances and his generosity.
