2019, 1st Game Vs Ga Southern

Will go a little deeper into this one as we get closer. One of those so called, Rent-A-Win teams. Ga So. went from 10 losses in 2017, to 10 wins in 2018. They lead the Nation in turn over stats, +22. The OC Bob DeBesse has over 30 years coaching experience. The DC Scot Sloan played at Clemson, then was a GA there for 4 years. The returning QB ran for over 1,000 yards and passed for a little under 1,000. Get this, 10 TD’s passing, no Ints. Also, 15 rushing TD’s. They went to Clemson last year, and were +2 there in TO’s. Every game but 2, they were in the + column in TO’s. When you see, +5, +4, +3 in games, that has a cause for concern.

The last time they beat an SEC school, 2013, UFla.

I plan to make the first LSU home game. Will drive to La Thursday night, after catching a opening game at Lamar, in Beaumont. A friend on the staff there, texted me that I have a sideline pass if I want one. So catching  a early game to start the season, then once in La, might try to catch a Friday night, high school game.

LSU got its first break of the 2019 season when it was announced Friday morning that season opening opponent Georgia Southern has suspended starting quarterback Shai Werts and defensive end Quan Griffin.

GSU coach Chad Lunsford said Werts was arrested Wednesday in South Carolina for speeding and possession of cocaine. Griffin was arrested in Florida in a domestic dispute incident.

Werts, a junior, was second-team All-Sun Belt Conference last season for the 10-3 Eagles. Starting all 13 games, he rushed for 908 yards and 15 touchdowns and passed for 987 yards and 10 touchdowns with no interceptions.

Redshirt junior Griffin played in every game last season and started once. He had 22 tackles, 3 sacks and led the team with 3 forced fumbles.

“In keeping with our student athlete Code of Conduct, Georgia Southern University suspended quarterback Shai Werts and defensive end Anquan Griffin from all football related operations after we received information that the two were involved in separate incidents this (past) week,” Lunsford told the media before his team’s first preseason practice Friday morning.

“The suspensions are in place to protect Shai, Quan and the university.”

Both of Werts’ backups from last season didn’t return for this year. The only QBs now listed behind Werts are 5-11, 175-pound redshirt freshman Justin Tomlin, 6-2, 200-pound sophomore Jaalon Frazier and 6-3, 195-pound true freshman Jaden Jenkins.

Of the three QBs, Tomlin is the only one who has actually taken a snap in a game. He took one snap against Coastal Carolina last year, fumbled it and Coastal Carolina recovered to set up a late TD.

LSU plays Georgia Southern on Aug. 31 in Tiger Stadium.

LSU's opening opponent suspends starting QB, along with key defender following two separate arrests

The Tigers were already nearly a four-touchdown favorite to open the season at home against Georgia Southern (the line is currently at LSU +26.5) and now the outcome of that game looks all the more certain as the Eagles have suspended two key players heading into fall camp.

Georgia Southern will likely be without starting quarterback Shai Werts and starting defensive end Anquan Griffin when the Eagles open the season in Death Valley as GSU head coach Chad Lunsford recently announced both players have been suspended indefinitely.

If you were unaware, Georgia Southern runs a triple-option offense. Now without the centerpiece of the team’s offense, GSU looks far less intimating.

Last fall during his sophomore season, Werts threw for 987 yards with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 908 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns for Georgia Southern. Based upon the charges levied against him, it’s hard to imagine he returns in time for the opener against LSU.

“Shai was arrested Wednesday in South Carolina during a traffic stop. It is our understanding he was charged with speed and misdemeanor possession of cocaine after some residue was discovered on the hood of the car,” Lunsford added. “Quan was arrested yesterday in Baker County, Florida. It is our understanding he was charged in conjunction with a domestic dispute. The suspensions are in place to protect Shai, Quan and the university.”

Georgia Southern suspends starting quarterback, defensive end

LSU opens training camp as a 27-point favorite against Georgia Southern, and that number is about to get even bigger after the latest news out of Statesboro, Ga.

Georgia Southern announced the suspension of starting quarterback Shai Werts and starting defensive end Quan Griffin because of arrests last week. Both players face indefinite suspensions, meaning they are either out for the opener against LSU or will not have a full training camp to prepare if reinstated.

“In keeping with our student-athlete Code of Conduct, Georgia Southern University suspended quarterback Shai Werts and defensive Anquan Griffin, from all football-related operations and after we received information that the two were recently arrested in separate incidents this week,” coach Chad Lunsford announced, via WJCL reporter Frank Sulkowski. “Shai was arrested Wednesday in South Carolina during a traffic stop. It is our understanding he was charged with speed and misdemeanor possession of cocaine after some residue was discovered on the hood of the car. Quan was arrested yesterday in Baker County, Fla. It is our understanding he was charged in conjunction with a domestic dispute. The suspensions are in place to protect Shai, Quan and the university.”

Back at LSU, the Tigers checked in yesterday as the No. 6 team in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll. LSU opens the regular season on Sat., Aug. 31 in Tiger Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU. At Southeastern Conference Media Days, Orgeron said he thinks his team is ready for the next step.

"Last year I felt we had a good season. We were two players away from being 12-1," Orgeron explained in Hoover, Ala. "We've got to expound on that this year. We cannot make the mistakes we made against Florida. We had opportunities to win the game at Texas A&M. Those are the two things we need to look at.

"Now, we had some big wins. Auburn was a big win. Miami was a big win. Georgia was a big win. Those were big wins. We did not play well against Alabama. Now we have to go on the road and play them again. We have a tough schedule this year, but we have a good football team. We should be able to answer the bell."

In Week 2, the test will be facing preseason No. 10 Texas in the first of a home-and-home series in Austin. It'll be a matchup of two physical quarterbacks in returning starters Joe Burrow and Sam Ehlinger for the Tigers and Longhorns, respectively. Orgeron said Burrow's mentality permeates through the offense, which figures to pass the ball a little bit more with the addition of passing game coordinator Joe Brady.

"I do believe that Joe, if we let him, would run into a brick wall no matter what it took. He's that tough as a -- he has a linebacker mentality. We are going to use him on quarterback runs, quarterback draws, but we're going to be careful how many times we run him again," Orgeron said. "But it does add another element to our offense. We still want to be physical. We have physical backs. LSU is always going to be physical. We want to be 50/50 and run the football."

Georgia Southern faces Minnesota out of the Big Ten West in Week 3. The Gophers went 7-6 last season under PJ Fleck with wins over Wisconsin and Georgia Tech to close out the season. Minnesota received one vote in the Amway Coaches Poll. The Gophers faces South Dakota State and Fresno State before a Week 3 clash with Georgia Southern rounds out the non-conference schedule.

Georgia Southern's Shai Werts cleared of cocaine charges after contending 'it's bird poop'

Georgia Southern starting quarterback Shai Werts had charges of misdemeanor cocaine possession dropped on Thursday, one week after the 21-year-old argued with police officers over a white substance on his vehicle they said tested positive as cocaine.

Werts contended it was "bird poop."

Saluda County (S.C.) Deputy Solicitor Al Eargle told The Savannah Morning News that the substance confiscated could not be proven to be cocaine. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) tests revealed that no controlled substance was present on the samples taken from the hood of Werts' vehicle that was pulled over for speeding on July 31.

In the initial Saluda County (S.C.) Sheriff's Office report, a white powdery substance was collected from the hood of the car. Two separate field tests of the substance (cocaine kits) conducted by deputies returned positive for cocaine, according the police report.

That was crazy. Kudos to the kid for being composed during the traffic stop.

It really was bird shyte.

That PD needs to be investigated, at least to address their field test.

That USA Today article was kind. It was proven to not be cocaine. Not unable to prove it was.

Wait...they saw some white stuff on the hood of his car and that is where the sample was taken from?

WTF?

I assumed he was pulled over and they found a white powdery substance IN the car, not ON it.

Nope, on the effing hood and it was smeared. He told them it was bird shite and he tried to get it off with a squeegie, so it smeared.

Hopefully, idiot kids who can't 'TidePack' won't start snorting bird poop mixed with Windex.

The reinstated QB ran for over 900 yards and passed for over 900, ran for 15 TD’s and passed for 10 TD’s without an Int.

This is one reason for the season national lead in turnovers, a +22. They do a good job of forcing TO’s. They return at least 6 players that had at least one Int. last season.

They return 7 players on each side of the ball.

They return both kicker and punter, also their kick and punt returner. Wesley Kennedy returns both kicks and punts.

STATESBORO, Ga. —

They say good things come to those who wait.

The old saying was certainly true for J.D. King and the Georgia Southern Eagles Monday night.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) handing down their decision on the eligibility of the Oklahoma State transfer.

King, a Fitzgerald native, has been ruled immediately eligible for the 2019 season.

King transferred to Georgia Southern in January. He and the University have been awaiting word from the NCAA since the original request for eligibility was submitted to the NCAA on March 29.

King went through spring practice with the Eagles and has been a full participant in fall camp.

As a freshman in 2017, King was Oklahoma State's second-leading rusher with 469 yards, scoring five touchdowns (four rushing, one receiving). In 2018, he played in 10 games for the Cowboys, rushing 43 times for 153 yards.

Georgia Southern opens the 2019 season on Aug. 31 at No. 6 LSU.

A week until kickoff, LSU's football season ticket total nearing 70,000 mark from last season

Nearly a week until LSU's football team opens the 2019 season, a school official said the athletic department is nearing its season ticket sale mark from last season.

LSU has sold about 69,000 season tickets as of Friday afternoon, said LSU senior associate athletic director Robert Munson, and the number is expected to have more movement toward last year's approximate 70,000 total by the time the Tigers play Georgia Southern at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 31.

LSU's season ticket sales slightly dropped from a record-high of 74,350 in 2015 to 71,800 in 2017, and if the school's totals reach last year's mark, the sales will have been fairly consistent over the past three seasons.

The university has sold all of its flex pass tickets, Munson said, which for $360 each, gives a buyer seven passes and they can choose which matchup to redeem the their passes and the quantity of passes they want to redeem for each game.

Skyline Club and standard season ticket options remain available, although Munson said the home games for both Florida and Auburn (both top 25 teams in the AP preseason poll) have limited options. Some season ticket options require a donation to LSU's Tradition Fund, and the Skyline Club, which holds up to 1,500 people, has a full bar and a buffet.

Made a home game Thursday night at Lamar, they played Bethel. Due to the heat, I watch the game from the coaches office. Plus they had a nice spread of food across the hall. The final, 65-16 Lamar. Had to leave a little early, due to my drive to my place in S. La. Made it here at around 1:30. Going to do lunch with the crew around noon. We will start talking LSU Football and this upcoming game.
