BATON ROUGE – LSU quarterback Joe Burrow was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this year on Monday, the league office announced.

Burrow joins Tommy Hodson in 1989 and JaMarcus Russell in 2006 as the only quarterbacks in LSU history to earn SEC Offensive Player of the Week three times in a single season. The honor is the fifth for Burrow during his LSU career as he won the award twice in 2018.

Burrow’s honor came for his record-setting performance in LSU’s 66-38 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday as the senior set a school-record with six touchdown passes in the Tiger victory.

Burrow completed 25-of-34 passes for 398 yards as the Tigers scored the most points in regulation in a SEC game in school history. With 398 passing yards against the Commodores, Burrow became the first play in LSU history to throw for 350 yards or more in three straight games and he extended his school-record streak of consecutive games with at least 20 completions in seven straight.

Of Burrow’s 398 passing yards, 357 came in the first half, which is also a school record and the most by a quarterback in the SEC in the last 15 years.

Overall through four games, Burrow has more completions (100), passing yards (1,520) and passing touchdowns (17) than any player in school history over that span.

LSU currently leads the nation in scoring offense (57.8 points per game) as the Tigers have scored more points through the first four games of a season than any other team in school history during the SEC era.

Burrow has led the Tigers to a 14-3 mark during his 17 starts as the Tiger quarterback.

The Best?

Derek Mason is sold on LSU, calls Joe Burrow best QB he's faced at Vanderbilt

Keith Farner | 4 hours ago

Since Derek Mason has been the coach at Vanderbilt in the last six years, the Commodores have faced some NFL talent at quarterback. That group includes Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott, Ole Piss’ Chad Kelly, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Georgia’s Jake Fromm, Notre Dame’s Ian Book and Missouri’s Drew Lock.

But Mason, in an interview on the “Wake Up Zone” on 104.5 in Nashville, put LSU’s Joe Burrow in a class by himself.

“The best one I’ve seen since I’ve been in the SEC,” Mason said. “I know people talk about some of the Alabama teams. I think Alabama a couple years ago was pretty dynamic. You watch this LSU team and just based on what they can do, they can run the ball good enough. It’s not the typical LSU run game, but it doesn’t matter. Because of what’s happening with Joey Burrow and what he does with the football, and the matchups that they create, the stress that they put on you, and really his ability to be accurate with the football. That’s one thing that really set Drew Brees apart is his accuracy and his ability to find tight windows and get the ball to his guys. I think Joe Burrow may be the best quarterback I’ve seen since I’ve been here.

Mason then understood the high praise and magnitude that the comment held.

“That’s saying a lot, but I think Joey Burrow is definitely the best quarterback that we’ve played against,” he continued.

Burrow certainly had a big day on Saturday to cause that opinion to take shape in a 66-38 LSU victory. He had a school-record six touchdown passes, and was 25-for-34 passing for 398 yards. He completed passes to seven receivers. Mason said his defense’s poor showing contributed to that.

“Just the early start,” he said. “The way we started this game, I thought my guys were a little off just in terms of our depths, what we were doing, like on the back end a little bit. It led to some explosive plays. We couldn’t find angles, we didn’t do a very good job. Our tackling, early in this ball game and I think it just had everything to do with us not getting into a rhythm and being able to be consistent.”

LSU football: Ranking Tigers' 10 best players after 4 games

Les East | 1 hour ago

LSU has received significant contributions from players in all three phases during its 4-0 start.

The offense has been outstanding, the defense has been good enough and the special teams have been very good as the No. 4 Tigers enter the first of their 2 open dates.

Already there have been several conference and national accolades bestowed on individual Tigers for their standout performances, most notably quarterback Joe Burrow being named SEC Offensive Player of the Week 3 times.

Here is a rundown of the Top 10 LSU players through 4 games:

10. DL Breiden Fehoko

Key stat: 3 tackles for loss

Fehoko has been the most consistently disruptive force on a line that has been limited by a series of injuries in the early going. The defense has taken some hits, but it has been relatively stout against the run, allowing fewer than 100 yards per game.

9. PK Cade York

Key stat: 7-for-7 field goals

The freshman had one hiccup when he sliced a missed PAT against Northwestern State, but otherwise he has been everything head coach Ed Orgeron had hoped for. The longest kick of his 7 is from 48.

8. S Grant Delpit

Key stat: 16 tackles

In reality Delpit hasn’t lived up to his lofty standard entirely, uncharacteristically missing tackles and not making a bunch of big plays. But even a sub-par start keeps him among the best. He’ll figure it out. Dave Aranda’s front 7 can help by getting more pressure on the QB, something that will matter more later in the season.

7. RB Clyde-Edwards Helaire

Key stat: 433 all-purpose yards

The running game hasn’t been great and it has certainly been overshadowed by the passing game, but Edwards-Helaire has been the leading rusher. He has rushed for 5 touchdowns and been involved in the passing game and return game.

6. LB Jacob Phillips

Key stat: 35 tackles

He is the leading tackler on the team by a margin of 13 and also has a fumble recovery as one of the leaders of a defense still finding its identity.

5. CB Derek Stingley Jr.

Key stat: 7 pass breakups

You knew QBs would challenge the freshman, and he has been up to the task. Stingley grabbed the Tigers’ long-awaited 1st interception against Vanderbilt last Saturday and he has been a consistent ball hawk in an inconsistent secondary. He also has helped bring life to the punt return team.

4. WR Justin Jefferson

Key stats: 21 receptions, 5 TDs

He has the most catches among the trio of Tigers wide receivers whose statistics are practically identical and he has scored 5 touchdowns. He’s part of the reason LSU leads the SEC in long completions (Tigers have 12 catches for 30+ yards).

3. WR Terrace Marshall Jr.

Key stat: 6 touchdown catches

He has found the end zone the most among LSU receivers and is tied for 2nd nationally, but he won’t be there for a while after undergoing foot surgery to repair an injury suffered against Vanderbilt.

2. WR JaMarr Chase

Key stat: 19.9 yards per catch

Chase has matched Jefferson’s 5 touchdown receptions while leading the team in yards per catch and he missed one game while suspended. LSU’s receivers rank No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 in the SEC in yards per catch.

1. QB Joe Burrow

Key stat: Pick one

Burrow has completed 80.6 percent of his passes for 1,520 yards and 17 touchdowns to start what might become the most efficient and productive season ever by an LSU quarterback.

He threw for 471 yards in a coming out party victory over Texas.

He broke the school record for touchdown passes in a game when he threw 6 in the 66-38 victory against Vanderbilt. In that game his 398 passing yards made him the first Tiger to throw for 350 yards or more in 3 consecutive games and he extended his school-record streak of consecutive games with at least 20 completions to 7.

LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is one of eight players that has been added to the Biletnikoff Award's watch list for nation's most outstanding receiver, the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation announced Tuesday morning.

The award adds players to the list during the season, and Chase now joins teammate Justin Jefferson, who was named to the list during the preseason.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Chase has played in three of LSU's four games games and ranks second nationally in receiving yards per game (132.3) and is tied for eighth nationally with five touchdown receptions.

Chase had a record performance in LSU's 66-38 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, when he caught 10 passes for 229 yards and four touchdowns.

The touchdown count set a single-game school record for an SEC game. The yard total was the fourth-highest in school history behind Josh Reed (293 vs. Alabama, 2001), Todd Kinchen (248 vs. Mississippi State, 1991) and Reed (239 vs. Illinois, 2001).

Chase, an Archbishop Rummel High graduate, was LSU's first receiver to log more than 200 yards receiving in a game since Odell Beckham Jr. recorded 203 yards on six catches against Furman in 2013.

2020 NFL Draft prospect Rankings: Top-five players at each offensive position

BY MICHAEL RENNER
SEP 26, 2019

Days away from the start of the fifth week of the 2019 college football season, I’ve listed my top-five 2020 NFL Draft prospects at every offensive position. Enjoy!

[Editor’s note: PFF’s Preseason 2020 NFL Draft Guide is LIVE and features 150 Two-Page Player Profiles, giving you advanced stats, game grades and much, much more. All existing EDGE and ELITE subscribers have access to the guide and can download it here.]

QUARTERBACK

1. Tua Tagovailoa

No change here and I’m not sure I expect one anytime soon. Tua’s combination of mobility, anticipation and accuracy is tailor-made for the modern passing attacks in the NFL. His lack of top-tier arm strength is far from a major concern in our world. He only has an 84.3 passing grade this season in large part because he hasn’t needed to attack downfield.

2. Justin Herbert

Our biggest worry for Herbert was his inability to show up big in big games. That’s come to fruition once again, as the Oregon quarterback earned grades of 55.6 and 70.1 against Auburn and Stanford, respectively, while he earned grades of 85.7 and 80.7 against Nevada and Montana, respectively. That has to change going forward, but his arm talent is still too impressive to drop too far down our list. He’s not just a big arm too, Herbert has shown accuracy at all levels of the football field, and we couldn’t help but wonder what he’d look like in a more vertical passing scheme as opposed to Oregon’s screen-heavy offense (over one-fifth of his attempts this year have been screens).

3. Joe Burrow

No one has shot up our board faster, and really the only thing holding him back from pushing higher is sample size. Through four games, he’s the highest-graded quarterback in the country and torched both Texas and Vanderbilt. His pocket presence is top-notch and has stepped into a ton of downfield strikes from tight pockets. He’ll get a chance to prove himself against vaunted Florida and Alabama defenses later in the year to prove he’s no fluke.

With less than half the regular season in the books, LSU senior quarterback Joe Burrow continues his climb up the school's all-time passing lists.

Burrow threw for five scores for the third time in five games in Saturday's 42-6 pounding of Utah State and now has 22 passing touchdowns for the season.

Before this season, only one other quarterback to wear an LSU uniform, Zach Mettenberger, had five touchdown passes in a game in the first 125 years of the program.

With his five touchdowns, Burrow is now tied for third for the most passing scores in a season in school history with Mettenberger, who did it in 2013, and Tommy Hodson, who had 22 in 1989.
