ANDREW OLSON | 13 HOURS AGO

LSU signee Marcel Brooks has a bright future ahead of him in Baton Rouge.

In Saturday’s All-American Bowl high school all-star game in Houston, Brooks impressed with seven tackles. The Flower Mound, Texas product has one more high school football game to take part in before starting his Tigers career.

The Polynesian Bowl, billed as “a premier all-star football game featuring the world’s elite high school players of Polynesian heritage and other ancestries” announced Brooks’ participation Sunday. The game is set for Jan. 19.

Brooks is rated the No. 3 outside linebacker, No. 6 Texas product and No. 44 prospect overall in the 2019 recruiting class. He signed with LSU in December.

Stingley's already impressing Aranda, Burrow

BySHEA DIXON Jan 9, 12:08 PM

Five-star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.. moved into his new home this week, enrolling at LSU and beginning classes as he gears up to be a full participant in the spring with the football team.

It’s the head start that gives freshmen across the country the chance to make up some ground ahead of their first season on the field, adding a full semester of school to get adjusted to college life and participating in double-digit spring practices with the team.

By the time the rest of the 2019 signees arrive in June, Stingley will be well-adjusted to life as an LSU football player. If there’s a way to get ahead of the curve, this was it.

But when he straps on the helmet for spring practices in March, he won’t be doing so for the first time. Thanks to a last-second decision last month, he’s already gotten a taste.

Stingley began practicing with the LSU football team during bowl preparations for UCF, which brought with it the chance at some first-team reps with the defense.

Despite being 17 years old and just a few weeks removed from a high school classroom, Stingley shined. And he shined bright.

Ed Orgeron called him one of the best football players he had ever recruited. After getting an eye on him in bowl practice, defensive coordinator Dave Aranda came with his own praise.

“He looks like the best guy we’ve got,” Aranda said after the Tigers practiced without their starting cornerbacks, Kristian Fulton and Greedy Williams, during bowl practice. “In the practices we had, I think he had three picks.”

For LSU starting quarterback Joe Burrow, the idea that he’s returning for his senior year and will be surrounded by some talented new faces is promising. But it also comes with reservations.

“I always tell people that you can never really count on freshmen,” Burrow said. “You can’t bank on them being really good players in year one. If they are really good players in year one, then that is kind of icing on the cake. A lot of guys aren’t ready to come in and play right away.

“I don’t know if the guys are going to come in and be ready. You never know until you get into camp. But as much help as we can get, if we can get some really good players on this team, we will take it.”

That’s his general take on newcomers.

After facing off against Stingley, and being on the other end of the interceptions the true freshman grabbed, Burrow doesn’t see a college player who went to high school across town just a month ago.

“No, he does not look like a 17-year old, I will tell you that,” Burrow said with a grin.

“He’s a pretty good player. I was trying him. He was only at practice for three days I think, but you know, I was impressed with him. I was trying him all three days. He stepped up to the challenge. So I was actually impressed, surprisingly.”

If it takes a lot to impress Burrow, the same can be said for Aranda.

LSU’s defensive coordinator is one of the most highly-regarded minds in college football, and his track record of success has kept the Tigers as one of the best defensive units in the country.

And while defensive backs coach Corey Raymond was the point-man in Stingley’s recruitment, Aranda also played a key role - and had a front seat view for the action. His kids are enrolled at school in Dunham, where Stingley just graduated. He also has been on staff for nearly as long as Stingley was in high school, giving him a chance to see his development up close.

And while Stingley has already been tabbed by the 247Sports Composite as a five-star and the No. 1 cornerback in America, what does Aranda see that makes him a “can’t miss” prospect at 17 years old?

“He has a real quiet, strong confidence about him,” Aranda said. “So, he owns the field when he walks on it. He has great athleticism, great strength. There is a complete package there.

“You talk about how he approaches the game, there is a humbleness to him. So he’s willing to learn and willing to adjust, but when it’s competition, he owns it. That’s the combination you are looking for.”

What LSU’s looking for now is a replacement for Williams at cornerback. If Kristian Fulton returns for his senior season, Stingley could line up opposite Fulton in what would arguably be one of the nation’s top cornerback tandems. Orgeron has also tabbed Stingley as an early option on special teams as a punt returner.

The next question is one that likely won’t bring an answer until September, but it’s worth pondering in an offseason where no football is played.

Is Stingley ready to handle the pressure to perform that will come with being the program’s highest-ranked signee since Leonard Fournette?

When asked that question, Aranda paused, then passed along his take.

“That’s a good question,” he said. “I am familiar with the Dunham program and the community there. I mean, he is a legend there. The way he handles my kids, who are big fans of his, or the way he handles the dads of random Dunham students, he’s been in the spotlight before, a little bit. Obviously the light is going to get pretty bright coming up.

“But I think you look at him and his nature and that calm, quite confidence he has, I would bet on that.”

Some accomplishments by defensive back Derek Stingley Jr. sound like myths rather than reality.

The Dunham School standout never gave up a touchdown pass in his high school career, which included a season as an eighth-grader when he weighed just 125 pounds.

No passes were completed on Stingley during his senior season. He gave up only one reception and made 11 interceptions as a junior.

Story Continued Below

Though Stingley signed last month and is now enrolled at LSU, the awards keep coming. Add the Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance/Louisiana Sports Writers Association Mr. Football award to the long list.

“Wow … that is big. This was one award I didn’t think I could win. There are great players in Louisiana and I know what they did and what they bring to the game,” Stingley said. “For me, it is always about doing whatever my team needs. An award like this means hard work paid off. It means a lot.”

Stingley also was selected as the Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year and as a national Gatorade Player of the Year finalist. Other awards, including the LSWA’s Outstanding Defensive Player in Class 2A and The Advocate’s Class 3A and below All-Metro MVP for defense, also were a part of the résumé for the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Stingley. He is the first Dunham player to win the Mr. Football award.

Rated as the nation’s No. 1 cornerback prospect by two recruiting services and the nation’s top overall prospect for 2019 by one service, Stingley was an all-around asset for the Tigers.

Stingley was rarely targeted as a defensive back and as a senior, finishing with 19 tackles, 11 assists, three pass breakups and two interceptions, one of which he returned for touchdown. He returned three punts for TDs, caught 23 passes for 667 yards and eight TDs and also rushed for 201 yards and two TDs. Stingley finished his career with 27 interceptions, 17 pass breakups and 14 punt returns for TDs.

“As a 13-year-old, eighth-grader, you could see Derek was a really good player,” Dunham coach Neil Weiner said. “But the way he has worked to get stronger and improve his skills, especially over the last couple of years, has made it possible for him to achieve so much.”

Weiner noted how coachable Stingley was and also pointed out that he routinely won the school’s Top Tiger award given to the team’s strongest player based on weight lifts in the offseason.

“As he has grown physically, Derek continued to get better and better,” Dunham offensive coordinator Randy Leindecker said. “He is a once-in-a-lifetime player for a coach.”

Future Tiger turning heads at the Polynesian Bowl.

DT Siaki Ika

The LSU commit is a massive individual, weighing over 370 pounds at the All-American Bowl two weeks ago, but for his size, he moves extremely well, is nimble on his feet, has a variety of moves but then also uses his sheer size and strength to get into the backfield. He blew up a number of plays for his own team's offense and even lined up at defensive end and showed some burst off the edge.

Marcel Brooks, Siaki Ika move up in 247Sports Composite

ByBILLY EMBODY 19 hours ago

It's nearing the end of the 2019 recruiting cycle with National Signing Day just weeks away. The ranking services are making their final updates to rankings with all-star games all but in the rear-view mirror. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite saw its update come through after other services dropped new rankings.

With that, 2019 Flower Mound (Tex.) Marcus outside linebacker and LSU signee Marcel Brooks earned his fifth star on the 247Sports Composite, jumping up from No. 44 to No. 28 overall and is now the consensus No. 2 outside linebacker nationally. 247Sports already rated Brooks in five-star territory at No. 23 overall ahead of the update.

LSU signee and four-star defensive tackle Siaki Ika saw a bit of a jump, going from No. 159 to No. 134 overall, after his impressive performance in the All-American Bowl.

Baton Rouge (La.) Southern Lab offensive guard Kardell Thomas dropped a few spots from No. 32 to No. 37 overall, dropping to a four-star prospect. His teammate and LSU running back signee Tyrion Davis slid up a spot from No. 142 to No. 141 overall and is the No. 8 overall running back nationally.

Memphis (Tenn.) University School defensive back and LSU commit Maurice Hampton dropped from No. 63 to No. 125 overall and to the No. 13 overall cornerback in the country. The two-sport star is in Baton Rouge this weekend for a visit with the baseball team and is also considered a top flight MLB Draft prospect.

On the uncommitted prospect front, Amite (La.) defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsherdropped from No. 9 overall in the country to No. 32, just on the edge of five-star territory. When speaking with 247Sports at the Polynesian Bowl, Sopsher said Alabama, LSU and Ole Piss are expected to receive the final visits.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball is shifting to Alabama for the No. 3 defensive tackle nationally while in-state LSU holds an edge overall still.

Sopsher's teammate and four-star athlete Devonta Lee slid down from No. 130 to No. 164 overall. The 247Sports Crystal Ball has LSU with the 95 percent edge over Alabama to land Lee on Feb. 6.

A trio of Mississippi defensive linemen, all with LSU interest, made moves as well with Nathan Pickering moving from No. 65 to No. 59 overall, Charles Moorejumping from No. 105 to No. 71 and Byron Young moving from No. 88 overall to No. 82. LSU is hosting Pickering for an official visit weekend while Moore and Young are tripping to Baton Rouge for the final weekend before National Signing Day to get a look at campus.

Alabama defensive back commit Christian Williamsdropped from No. 115 to No. 133 overall. LSU is expected to host Williams for an official visit on the final weekend of the contact period.

Stick with 247Sports for our final ranking updates, due out next week, which will again shift the 247Sports Composite.

5-star Marcel Brooks moves up even more

BySHEA DIXON 13 hours ago

After a big showing during both his senior season and at the 2019 All-American Bowl in San Antonio, one of LSU’s highest-rated signees has moved up even further in the rankings.

Marcel Brooks is now ranked as a five-star prospect and the No. 17 overall recruit in the country on 247Sports, up from No. 23 overall in the last round of rankings on the site. The 247Sports team revealed the final five-stars, 32 in total, on Tuesday morning.

Brooks entered the day ranked No. 28 overall on the 247Sports Composite, where he checked in as the No. 2 overall outside linebacker prospect in the 2019 class. That ranking is likely to move up once the final 247Sports rankings are revealed this month.

Brooks is a dominant athlete on the high school football field, excelling at a number of positions on both sides of the ball. As a senior at Marcus High in Flower Mound, Texas, Brooks saw time at outside linebacker, safety and wide receiver, among other positions.

He caught 31 passes for 635 yards as a wide receiver this past fall, though he has his eyes set on stepping into LSU’s defense as an early-impact addition, where he can both rush the passer and spend time in coverage.

At the All-American Bowl, Brooks checked in at 6-1.25 and 192.80 pounds, and this past summer at The Opening Finals, he clocked an impressive 4.60 40-yard dash, a 4.36 shuttle and 36.70-inch vertical jump/

247Sports Midlands Region Recruiting Analyst Gabe Brooks said the following about Brooks after tracking him across his high school football career.

“Tall, long, rangy athlete with outstanding frame. Good height and a huge wingspan. Bulking potential is very high given his frame. Dynamic athlete who shows outstanding playmaking ability on both sides of the ball. Dominant at times against strong competition in Texas' largest classification. Has shown impact playmaking ability at outside linebacker, receiver, and even DB. Projects to outside linebacker with a very high ceiling as a pass-rusher. Outstanding top-end speed relative to projected position. Explodes off the edge and closes fast. Dangerous in backside pursuit. Powerful striker. Scheme-versatile. Plays with a mean streak. While the frame potential is outstanding, considerable bulk addition must occur to play in the box at the high-major level, possibly leading to an adjustment to playing heavier. Raw from a technical standpoint relative to his projected position. A bit narrow and will need to build size and strength to combat college linemen, particularly in the running game. Will need to acclimate physically and technically to every-down grind at the line of scrimmage if asked to play from the edge.”

In addition to competing in The Opening Finals and the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Brooks was named one of the top performers at the Polynesian Bowl this past week.

Emery finishes as No. 1 RB in America

LSU signed Louisiana’s top-ranked running back last month when Destrehan’s John Emery inked his scholarship papers with the Tigers, making things official in one of the most heated running back battles in the 2019 cycle.

The LSU staff ultimately flipped Emery away from a verbal pledge to the Georgia Bulldogs, with a turning point coming after the Tigers knocked the Bulldogs off in front of a sold out Tiger Stadium crowd.

Now, the Tigers aren’t only getting the state’s top running back, but the No. 1 running back in the country.

On Tuesday, the 247Sports team revealed the final 32 five-stars for the 2019 class, and not only was Emery in that mix, but he moved up in the rankings to become the No. 1 running back in the country.

Emery entered the day as a five-star on 247Sports, but he was ranked as the No. 12 overall prospect in the country and the No. 2 running back in the class, behind Alabama signee Trey Sanders.

But in the final rankings release, Emery pulled ahead of Sanders, with Emery checking in at No. 11 overall and Sanders at No. 14 overall.

Emery is the highest-rated running back to sign with LSU since Leonard Fournette in 2014. He helped Destrehan to a 13-2 record during his senior year, rushing for 1,693 yards and 26 touchdowns in leading the Wildcats to the 5A state semifinals.

As a junior, Emery totaled 1,029 all-purpose yards with nine touchdowns, averaging more than seven yards per carry in six games before suffering a season ending injury.

Emery is currently ranked as the No. 12 overall prospect in the country on the 247Sports Composite rankings, where he’s ranked as the No. 2 running back. Those rankings could shift slightly on the 247Sports Composite following Tuesday’s release of the final five-stars. He’s ranked as the No. 2 prospect in Louisiana behind five-star Derek Stingley, who also signed with the Tigers in December.

At 5-foot-11 and 206 pounds, Emery clocked a verified 4.42 40-yard dash, a 4.20 shuttle and a 37.90-inch vertical jump at The Opening Finals in July 2018.

23COMMENTS

247Sports national director of scouting Barton Simmons said Emery is a “significant impact player at a major program and has first round NFL Draft traits”.

Stingley finishes as top CB in 247Sports history

BySHEA DIXON Jan 22, 11:20 AM

LSU’s highest-ranked signee has not only finished as a five-star prospect, but the No. 2 overall prospect in the country.

On Tuesday, the final 247Sports five-stars were revealed, and defensive back Derek Stingley Jr. finished as the No. 2 overall prospect on 247Sports.

"He's a guy we strongly considered at No. 1," said 247Sports national recruiting analyst Barton Simmons. "I don't think there is a safer bet in this class to hit."

Stingley finishes as the highest-ranked cornerback ever on 247Sports.

Stingley remained not only the nation’s highest-ranked cornerback, but also the highest-ranked defensive back in the 2019 class. He enrolled at LSU last month and participated in a handful of the team’s bowl practices ahead of the win over Central Florida, and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda and head coach Ed Orgeron both praised Stingley for his showing against college players.

With the final 247Sports five-stars locked in, all eyes will be on Stingley’s shuffle in the final 247Sports Composite rankings. Stingley entered the day ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the country behind Georgia signee Nolan Smith, but Smith checked in at the No. 4 overall spot in the final 247Sports rankings. The 247Sports Composite will be updated this week.

Stingley, a finalist for the 2018-19 Gatorade National Football Player of the Year and winner of Louisiana’s Gatorade Player of the Year for 2018, led Dunham to the Louisiana Division-III quarterfinals during his senior campaign, making plays all over the field in all three phases of the game.

As a senior, Stingley had four interceptions  - returning one for a touchdown – to go along with 24 receptions for 678 yards and eight touchdowns. He added 192 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He helped Dunham High School to back-to-back district titles for the first time in school history as a junior and senior, and he intercepted 14 passes over the final 20 games of his high school career.

Stingley saw action at safety, cornerback, wide receiver and return specialist in high school, and was also on the receiving end of Academic All-State honors on multiple occasions.

Stingley earned MVP honors on both offense and district for his district as well as being first team all-district on both sides of the ball, and he was selected to participate in the 2019  All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

At 6-0.5 and 188 pounds, Stingley had some of the best verified testing numbers in the 2019 class, recording a 4.30 40-yard dash, a 4.28 shuttle and a 42.00-inch vertical jump.

Stay tuned to 247Sports for more on the five-star rankings release, as well as the entire Top247 for the 2019 class.

As for DL, O and staff will have a couple in for visits this weekend, Charles Moore, Byron Young (Alabama commitment), and Nathan Pickering (Mississippi State commitment). Moore and Young will be making their official visits to LSU this weekend. From these 3 and Fonua, a get of two would be major.

WHY DEREK STINGLEY IS NO. 1

Derek Stingley Jr.
Nick Lucero/Rivals.com

is not ranked No. 1 in the country by anyone else, at least not to my knowledge, but in three years we will be hearing his name near the top of the NFL Draft. When we started to discuss the top of the 2019 class, we kept coming back to Stingley Jr. because of how rare he is as a cornerback prospect. Was this decision as easy as it was last year with ? Not even close, but I am confident in our choice.

Stingley Jr. has already shown he is ready to make an impact at LSU bowl practices and once he gets into a college weight room, he will add size, speed and power. Keep in mind, this is a prospect who is already 6-foot-1, 185 pounds and runs like a deer.

The first cornerback to be ranked No. 1 overall in Rivals.com history, Stingley Jr. is right up there with

, and a handful of others as the best at his position in my 20 years of scouting players.

Check back with me in a few years and congratulate us on being right.

LSU brought in a new edge-rushing commitment Sunday (Feb. 3) after official visits this weekend.

Utah junior college defensive end Soni Fonua announced his commitment to LSU on Saturday, three days before National Signing Day on Feb. 6.

Fonua is a 6-foot-4, 264-pound edge rusher from Salt Lake City who played at Mesa Community College in Arizona. The victory with Fonua gives LSU a second win in Utah this recruiting season, joining 4-star defensive tackle signee Apu Ika.

Fonua is a 3-star prospect, according to 247Sports Composite rankings, who is ranked the No. 63 junior college prospect in this class. He had offers from Nebraska and Oklahoma State, among others.

LSU signed 19 players in December’s early signing period, and the Tigers now have 21 commitments with the addition of Fonua.

The other is two-sport star defensive back Maurice Hampton, who is also a top MLB Draft prospect. He’s expected to sign with LSU Wednesday.

Ruston tight end and tackle Ray Parker is still publicly committed to LSU, but LSU sources said LSU moved on from Parker. He didn’t sign in December, and 247Sports reported he may not be academically eligible.

Now, the Tigers have four spots remaining to fill by Wednesday. Defensive line is a large focus.

This was on Dandy Don this morning.  I think Mo Claiborne won a state 100m dash title, and he did well at LSU.  I hope Mr. Palmer does as well.  The wide receiver stable is looking pretty good.

Congratulations to LSU wide receiver signee Trey Palmer of Kentwood High for winning two state titles in track and field yesterday. Palmer won the 100m with a time of 10.42 and broke the Louisiana Class 2A record with a 21.11 200m. With all the wide receiver talent LSU has returning this year, we sometimes forget about Palmer, but he’s going to be exceptional. As a wise man used to often say, speed kills.

LSU signee Maurice Hampton announces he's coming to LSU

ByBILLY EMBODY 92 minutes ago

2019 LSU football signee and Memphis (Tenn.) University School defensive back Maurice Hampton made the announcement Monday night during the 2019 MLB Draft that he's coming to Baton Rouge on Twitter. The two-sport star will suit up for both the baseball and football team this fall.

"God knows my worth and has a plan for me," Hampton said in the tweet. "Baton Rouge I’m coming home and I’m ready to work. #ForeverLSU

Another LSU signee, Georgia Premier Academy pitcher Daniel Espino went No. 24 overall to the Cleveland Indians, which has a slot value of $2,381,300. The right-hander's fastball sits between 94 and 96 mph, but has hit 100 mph before in competition. With the No. 49 overall pick, Cincinnati selected LSU signee and IMG Academy third baseman Rece Hinds, who is expected to sign with the Reds, where his slot value is $1,507,600.

For the 6-0, 205-pound safety and outfielder, he's one of the top athletes in the country on 247Sports, ranking as the No. 90 overall prospect in the country, No. 12 overall cornerback nationally and the No. 1 overall prospect in Tennessee. The four-star prospect picked LSU over Auburn, Ole Piss and plenty of others during the recruiting process. He's told his dad a simple message ahead of the draft.

“He always says, ‘Dad, going to LSU isn’t such a bad thing at all,' his father added."

His father, Maurice Sr., told Geaux247 before the draft that he wasn't expected to last past the first 41 picks in the draft. The slot value of the No. 41 overall pick is $1.8 million, but teams don't have to spend that amount. There's not a magic number for his son in terms of what he's looking for to go pro, his father reported, but that pick had come and gone and Hampton had not been selected.

“It’s one of those things where if they give you an amount you can’t refuse then you have to go,” Maurice Sr. told Geaux247 last month. “But, if they give him a small amount then he understands his worth and knows what is waiting for him in Baton Rouge and the opportunity to play both. He’s not looking for a reason to go straight to work. It has to be a reason for him to not go to LSU.

“But, it’s not just about money. It’s got to be the right situation with who he goes to and the opportunity has to be there for him to advance professionally.”

The Under Armour All-American projects as a second to third round pick on 247Sports, comparing favorably to Tampa Bay Buccaneers defender M.J. Stewart. 247Sports director of recruiting Barton Simmons broke down Hampton's game in his scouting report:

"Stocky, thick defensive back with limited length but versatile enough to play multiple positions in the secondary. Elite baseball player that has played safety and corner in high school and has been dominant at wide receiver. Outstanding ball skills with the ability to win 50-50 footballs. Excellent acceleration and long speed. Regularly runs past and away from defenders at receiver. Speed in pads is much better than documented track times. Has special teams value as a very productive returner. Linear athlete. Can be physical when he wants to be. Can play cornerback but may project better long term as a safety. Does have some hip stiffness. Multi-year Power 5 starter that can impact the game in all three phases. Potential high-round NFL Draft pick."
