Fla injuries

Trask managing discomfort, Mullen expects Zuniga at 100% vs. LSU

ByTHOMAS GOLDKAMP 3 hours ago

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- No. 7 Florida emerged from its game against Auburn relatively unscathed, despite some scary moments and a handful of players leaving the game at various points due to injury.

The big one, of course, being quarteback Kyle Trask. Trask suffered a minor MCL sprain after Auburn defender Marlon Davidson fell into him, causing Trask's left leg to buckle under him.

But after going to the locker room and missing two offensive series, Trask returned to the game. Coach Dan Mullenis fully expecting him to play Saturday against No. 5 LSU

"Kyle should be good to play this week," Mullen said. "Came back into the game and finished the game for us obviously, so he should be good to go this week."

Perhaps the biggest question marks heading into that meeting with LSU this weekend are running back Dameon Pierce (head) and defensive end Jabari Zuniga (ankle). Pierce left the game after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. He was dazed when he got up, and trainers immediately escorted him to the locker room after checking on him.

Pierce did not return to the game.

"Dameon Pierce’s got a chance to play as the week goes on," Mullen said. "We’ll see where he’s at coming off the hit he took in the game."

Zuniga, on the other hand, did not play against Auburn after Mullen had said earlier that week he expected the star defensive end to play. Zuniga did dress out, however, something that might indicate he's close to full health. SEC rules restrict the number of players that can dress out for conference games, so teams don't typically dress players who have no chance to play.

Of course, Mullen has been known to involve a little gamesmanship while discussing injuries. So it's hard to put full faith in his outlook on Zuniga this week, but there's a solid chance Zuniga is back against the Tigers.

"He was available (against Auburn)," Mullen said. "He was cleared to play but I don’t think he was 100%. Going into the game, our thoughts were, ‘Hey, if we cannot play him this week, gives him the opportunity to be 100% next week, instead of kind of playing at 80% on consecutive (weeks), you know, week after week as he was battling (the injury).' I know he wanted to play. He didn’t get into the game, but that’s a good thing for us because we expect him to be 100% coming into this game."

Zuniga suffered the left ankle injury in the first half at Kentucky on Sept. 14. He tried to return just after halftime but left the game for good after struggling through the first series of the second half.

He hasn't played since. His return would be a huge boost for a defensive line that is already playing terrific football without him.

Meanwhile, Mullen said safety Shawn Davis (shoulder) and defensive end Jonathan Greenard (ankle) are both fine after briefly checking out of Saturday's game against Auburn.

How healthy Florida can get prior to Saturday could be important. Florida looked much different against Auburn with a fully healthy defense, but a more balanced LSU team figures to offer a tough test.

Trask has played well when healthy, but he'll be working this week to minimize any discomfort playing on the slight MCL sprain.

"It's just day by day, I'll be ready to go on Saturday," Trask said. "It was (uncomfortable) at first but pain is kind of going away now. Like I said, training staff, they’re really doing a great job."

The Trask injury did draw some attention nationally after coach Dan Mullen said he thought it was a dirty play at halftime on the CBS broadcast. He has since walked back those comments.

Trask himself harbored no ill will toward Davidson for the hit. Davidson sought out Trask after the game to apologize.

"I really respected that," Trask said. "After seeing the play, I didn’t think he was trying to hurt me intentionally or anything like that. That says a lot about his character to come up and apologize even though he obviously wasn’t trying to do it on purpose. He just wanted to let me know and I really respect him for that."

Said Mullen Monday:

"Yeah, I'll put it this way: Maybe the use of that word, maybe that wasn't the right word at the time. I don't think that was being coached or there was intent to go injure him on that play. I think that's something when you look at player safety, we've got to really pay attention. I know as a league everyone wants to preach player safety, player safety, player safety... talk about it, but what are we doing about it? On those type of hits, I bet if those type of hits happen on Sunday they would have been called because they're talking about player safety. Maybe the choice of words at the time was wrong, but it's more a debate of 'I think those plays we want to try to get out of the game.' Plays where guys have a significant opportunity to get injured. Those are the plays, helmet-to-helmet hits, plays where players have a great chance of being injured we want to get out of the game."

Report: Injured LSU receiver returns to practice

Adam Spencer | 4 hours ago

The LSU receiving corps has been great all season, with Justin Jefferson looking like a star and Terrace Marshall Jr. and Ja’Marr Chase looking just as good.

However, Marshall suffered a foot injury during the Vanderbilt game and was out for LSU’s win over Utah State on Saturday.

01:10

Now, though, he’s already back in action, according to LSU reporter Brooks Kubena, who was at practice on Monday:

Big WR news: #LSU wide receiver Terrace Marshall is back and practicing. He has been out with a reported foot fracture in the Vanderbilt game, until now.

Marshall has 20 catches for 304 yards and 6 touchdowns already this season. He, Chase and Jefferson have combined for 19 touchdown grabs.

Will he be ready for this weekend’s showdown with Florida? We’ll see what coach Ed Orgeron has to say this week.

Week 8 SEC opening lines released

Michael Wayne Bratton | 2 hours ago

The first SEC point spreads for Week 8 have just been released courtesy of Las Vegas-based sportsbook Circa Sports.

Alabama rides into the Tennessee game having won 12 in a row in the annual series, which represents the longest streak in a series that dates back to 1903. Tennessee’s last win over Alabama came back in 2006.

LSU has a 3-2 advantage over Mississippi State in the five previous matchups with the Bulldogs winning the previous contest in Starkville by 30 points. The 37-7 game represents the largest margin of victory for MSU in the series against LSU.

Florida and South Carolina have split the previous six matches evenly, with the Gamecocks beating the GayTurds 28-20 in Columbia back in 2017. Four of the last six meetings in this series have been decided by single digits.

“The Gus Malzahn Bowl” has been won by Auburn three years in a row and five of the previous six years. On the bright side for Arkansas, three of the program’s previous four wins in this series have come in Fayetteville.

Georgia has defeated Kentucky in nine consecutive seasons and is only one win away from matching the longest streak in the series, which came between 1978 and 1987.

Here are the Week 8 opening lines just posted by Circa Sports:

Kentucky at Georgia (-27)
LSU (-18) at Mississippi State
Florida (-6.5) at South Carolina
Auburn (-16.5) at Arkansas
Missouri (-21.5) at Vanderbilt
Texas A&M (-6) at Ole Piss
Tennessee at Alabama (-35.5)

BySONNY SHIPP 6 hours ago

LSU knocked off its second top-10 team of the season with Saturday's 42-28 win over Florida.
