LSU's RB commitment moves up in rankings

LSU landed the program's running back commitment for the 2020 class this past weekend when four-star Kevontre Bradford, a Lancaster (Texas) High School standout, jumped on board with his verbal pledge following his official visit to Baton Rouge.

This week, the final 247Sports rankings were released, and Bradford inched even further up the board, going from the No. 162 overall prospect in the country up to No. 158.

The shift in the rankings also moved Bradford up multiple spots at the running back position, finishing as the No. 13 running back in the country on 247Sports, which also made him a Top 25 prospect in the state of Texas.

On the 247Sports Composite, Bradford settled in as the No. 13 running back prospect and No. 129 overall prospect in America. He also finished his high school career as the No. 18 prospect in Texas.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball trended to LSU started last week once Bradford reached campus for his official visit in Baton Rouge, and while Texas made an attempt at a late run at Bradford, the Longhorns were not able to get the four-star running back on campus before his decision to commit to the 2020 National Champions.

Bradford, who owns almost 30 college offers, is coming off a strong senior campaign that saw him run for 1,563 yards and 23 touchdowns on 9.2 yards per carry. He also caught 12 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns on 20.2 yards per reception.

During the past three seasons, Bradford has run for more than 3,000 yards for a consistently talent-laden Lancaster squad. Bradford is the lone running back commitment for LSU in the Tigers' 2020 recruiting class, putting an end to a multiple-year push for backs that was headlined by names like four-star Zachary Evans. LSU's addition of Bradford pushed the Tigers ahead of Ohio State and into the No. 4 spot in the 247Sports Team Rankings.

LSU established a rapport with Bradford starting with his September offer and maintained a relationship with him ever since. Ohio State was considered the top contender for Bradford in September and into October, which saw Bradford take an early-month official visit with the Buckeyes. But Ohio State wound up getting a commitment from an in-state running back, and the buzz around Bradford and the Buckeyes died down as the fall progressed.

Texas offered Bradford in December, while Florida State targeted Bradford with hopes of getting a Jan. 17 official visit from him. That visit did not happen. Despite the attention from Florida State and Texas, the belief that LSU was the frontrunner for Bradford gradually grew during the past couple of weeks.

Here's a breakdown from 247Sports analyst Gabe Brooks on what Bradford brings to the field:

Bradford is an explosive big-play running back with the requisite size and frame potential for the position. In the 5-foot-11, 190- to 195-pound range as a high school senior, Bradford owns the frame space to get to the 215-pound range in a college strength and conditioning program. He is already a strong, well-built athlete, so maximizing his frame will give him that much more power as a runner.

Early in Bradford's recruitment, he was considered an athlete prospect for the majority of schools pursuing him, but as his high school career progressed, it became obvious that his long-term destination would be running back. Bradford's build and athleticism would allow him to succeed at the FBS level as a safety or a receiver, which were positions that schools considered him early in the process.

As a runner, Bradford has shown a slashing style that sets up his ability as an open-field galloper who regularly hits the home run the ball. Over three years on Lancaster's varsity squad, Bradford averaged 9.9 yards per carry and a touchdown every 7.3 rushing attempts. Another positive from Bradford's high school career is that Lancaster did not overuse him; Bradford averaged only 102 carries per season. During his junior and senior campaigns, Bradford averaged 11.2 carries per game.

Bradford displays impressive initial explosion as a downhill runner and on the cutback. He is a dangerous candidate for the stretch game in a zone-blocking scheme. He is not a side-to-side, juke-heavy back, but he does accelerate explosively off a stop. Bradford's top-end speed is terrific in the open field and he is not somebody many defenses will be able to run down when he gets loose.

Bradford's speed is not verified in a combine testing environment. His junior track season was cut short because of a minor, nagging injury, so there is not much context in that department, either. But trust us when we saw Bradford has home run-hitting top-end speed in a functional, on-field capacity.

Improving pad level and consistency in that category are keys for Bradford, who is often an upright runner who presents a bigger target than necessary for defenders. Bradford has shown encouraging pass-catching ability when asked -- even lining up in the slot occasionally -- but his targets have been limited at the high school level (25 catches in three seasons). Learning the nuances of blitz pickup will be important, as it is for any back, and while Bradford does not have a fumbling issue, he plays a bit loose with the ball occasionally.

But make no mistake, Bradford is an impact running back and a terrific addition the 2020 recruiting class for LSU. He is a bona fide Power Five-caliber back with a lot of tread on the tires, the build for high volume, and the big-play athleticism to hit the long ball. Bradford possesses the potential to become a reliable starter with a long-term NFL Draft ceiling.

Does anyone (FH?) know if LSU stands a good chance to jump in the recruiting rankings when we get 5 or 6 more LOI on the 5th?  I wonder how many kids the teams ranked ahead of us signed on the early date?  I looked and InbredGumps signed 23 on Dec. 18.  If they only sign 2 more and LSU signs 6 more, would LSU gain a lot on them, possibly pass up InbredGumps?

I doubt it.

We only have one scholorship left, I think. The only impact player we have a shot at signing is Burch, however he is on his official visit to South Carolina this weekend. They are pulling out all of the stops this weekend (last before NSD) to try to prevent him from flipping to LSU.

He'll probably stick with his verbal to the Gamecocks, but if he does flip to LSU it likely would not move the needle that much.

I know it’s great with stars, rankings, etc. But this last season showed us just how good player development fits into a NC Season. Coaching, player development showed up very well. The main thing O and the staff played for one thing, a 15 game season. Sitting out players with bumps and bruises, players not 100%. Also allowing the younger players to get experience.

Meet the 2020 class. May or may not be added to tomorrow. Probably the best class in a decade.

e Tigers: LSU's 2020 Class

The LSU Tigers are sitting on a top five recruiting class for the 2020 cycle, signing 19 prospects in December before adding a commitment from four-star defensive back Dwight McGlothern on Saturday.

With five available spots left to fill ahead of February's National Signing Day, what's the outlook on LSU's haul this cycle?

We break down each position the Tigers have commitments and signees in from, which includes two quarterbacks, two tight ends and two wide receivers to go with a trio of offensive linemen. On the defensive side, the Tigers stacked up in the trenches and at edge rusher, also adding a pair of four-star middle linebackers and a handful of defensive backs. The staff didn't take a commitment or signature from a specialist this cycle.

I'm sorry, just seeing this.

No matter what happens tomorrow, LSU finishes with the 4th ranked class.

And it's technically the best class we've ever signed, without adding anyone tomorrow.

I'd put the 2001 class right behind them, they were the nucleus of the '03 Championship team:

That was a great class, no QB, but a bunch of everything else .

I saw Bull Hurley at Kyle Williams talk months back. Torran Williams, saw him a number of years back.

We have 8 EE on campus that will participate in Spring. We also have 11 signed. That’s 19. We have 5 verbals, 2 that you are waiting on as to where they will attend. 2 have grade problems of the 5 verbals. From the looks of things, tomorrow you could have 3 sign, with an outside chance of another. So almost a sure bet of 22. From there, wait on 2 guys to decide, odds against the Tigers, but these are kids, so. With a good shot at 22, the staff might have another. But for now, looks to hold out some for transfers, if they see something they like.

Man, I miss the Bash.

As Always, GEAUX TIGERS . 🐅

Muschamp's son just flipped to friggin GEORGIA. Was committed (recently) to Colorado State for a full ride, going to UGA as a friggin walk on.

I mean that ain't suspicious or anything.

He's BFFs with Jordan Burch btw...

I read somewhere that the top 5 classes are all equal.  I would buy that, but I think if you have a 5* QB in your class and the others don't, the class with the 5* QB is a little better.  The QB position is so important.  Ask us LSU fans, we played a decade without a really good one, and the team consistently under performed their potential.  Give us a Heisman QB, and we win a natty.

Meh...

Was surprised he comitted to Colorado State in the 1st place.

I'll be suspicious if Burch flips to UGA, though.

Sedrick Van Pran flipping from Georgia to LSU?

Don't do this to yourself lol.

The old saying, watch what they do, not what they say.  In this case, he's done nothing and said nothing to indicate he's interested in LSU.

McKinnley Jackson to TAMU

The only thing that gives me any hope on Burch is Steve Wiltfong predicted Jackson to TAMU when literally everyone else said InbredGumps, and he picked Burch 50/50 between LSU and USCjr when everyone else picked USCjr.  Well, Billy Embody picked LSU for Burch, so.........
