2020 LSU Football Commitments

Our average player rating (per 247) is 93.28.  We've previously never eclipsed 92.  That's why I've been saying this is technically the best class in LSU history.

If for whatever insane reason Burch winds up adding to this class, the average would be 93.56 or thereabouts.

Regardless, 4th in 247 class rankings.  We could neither lose 4th to tOSU nor leapfrog Clemson, InbredGumps, or UGA with whatever happened today.

Between Evans and this, I have quickly remembered why I got outta following recruiting too closely.

Friend texted me that link. I'll wait until a school officially announces he has signed.  And yes I don't follow recruiting like I used to, too much of  a circus to put in mildly

USC has confirmed he signed it, but also confirmed he hasn't submitted it.  They don't know why.

Haha, not so fast Herb!  Let's see where that NLI winds up lol.

Could be a battle royale between mom and son. Could be no big deal.  I'm sure not worrying about it.

That's what I'm thinking, but not sure which way.  He's 18 (or older), so he can sign without her if necessary.  Not sure wth he's/they're doing.

Now this'll be funny if it were to happen.

Some dude on another board (that Hatch hates lol) came on the other night claiming to be Burch's uncle James.  Said Burch would sign with LSU on FEBRUARY 7th, from NOLA, at a party for his grandmother.

February 7th is also my birthday (I am not Burch's grandmother), so I'd take it as a present if it happened lol.

I just watched Boom's presser.  Some reporter asked about a NLI that hasn't come in yet.

Perturbed with the question, he stated he couldn't talk about that. (which is true, if he is NOT indeed signed, he cannot be mentioned)

The reporter then asked why would someone not send in the NLI.  Boom replied "you gotta ask them".

Very weird situation

And here is the answer:

Quote

But as is often the case in signing day ceremonies nowadays, the piece of paper Burch sat down and signed in front of the cameras wasn’t actually his letter of intent. That’s commonly done before or after the ceremony and then faxed to the school. Only then can the program publicly acknowledge the signee.

What does LSU do with the remaining spots?

The LSU football staff reeled in three more signees on Wednesday's National Signing Day, putting the Tigers are 22 total signees for the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Given the NCAA has a 25-man limit on signing classes, what will LSU be able to do with the three remaining spots left that went unfilled on Wednesday?

Here's a look at some options for the Tigers, who landed the No. 4 recruiting class in the country on the 247Sports Team Rankings, finishing with the highest point total for the program in 247Sports history.

Adding 2020 prospects after National Signing Day

Wednesday is the first day in February that student-athletes can sign with a college program, but it's not the last.

Prospects can sign with a four-year college at any point ahead of the start date to the fall semester, as long as that school has open scholarships available. There are plenty of different prospects available that would fall under that umbrella, from late qualifiers - like former LSU wide receiver Justin Jefferson - to JUCO additions. That group also includes prospects that didn't elect to sign on Wednesday, but remain full qualifiers.

One name that LSU fans will be monitoring is longtime commitment CamRon Jackson, a defensive lineman out of Haynesville. Jackson made his official visit to LSU in January but didn't sign with the Tigers this week. The reasoning behind that decision came as a result of his academic standing, with Jackson planning to improve his GPA and test scores this spring in hopes of becoming a full qualifier out of high school. The NCAA allows schools to sign any prospect, but if they are not ruled eligible following their senior year of high school, the program wouldn't get that scholarship back - even when the recruit in question enrolled at a junior college instead of a four-year university. Because of that, LSU's staff took a cautious approach with signing academic risks on Wednesday, instead choosing to hold the spots until it's confirmed that prospects are fully qualified following their senior seasons.

The Transfer Portal

LSU has tested the NCAA Transfer Portal in year's past, and now three available spots allow them to do that again.

The biggest pull the Tigers have had from the transfer market during the Ed Orgeron era was quarterback Joe Burrow, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy and helped carry LSU to a 15-0 season and National Championship. In the same year, the Tigers also landed kicker Cole Tracy, who went on to become a record-setting specialist at LSU and set the NCAA record for points scored. The staff also inked cornerback Terrence Alexander in the same class as a graduate transfer.

LSU signed a full 25-man class a year ago in the 2019 cycle, which followed up the haul of Burrow, Tracy and Alexander in 2018. The year prior, the Tigers used the final scholarship on Jefferson, who became eligible just before fall camp of his freshman season.

What's available for the staff in the transfer portal this time around? You can check out the unsigned prospects in the 247Sports database, but it's a list that will only continue to add names this offseason. After losing a pair of starters in Jacob Phillips and Patrick Queen, plus names like Kendall McCallum entering the portal and Donte Starks being indefinitely suspended from the team, the middle linebacker position will certainly be one to watch when it comes to the Tigers searching for some immediate help building depth.

Another possible option: another offensive lineman, most notably at the center position following the departure of Lloyd Cushenberry.

"We are going to look at it," Orgeron said on Wednesday. "Obviously, we are always looking for offensive linemen. If there is a center position out there available, we would look at it. Maybe a linebacker, it all depends on what (Bo Pelini) thinks about the guys we have. We may need one, we may not. And, obviously, best player available."

Carrying the spots into the 2021 class

What happens if LSU still has spots available by the time the season begins next fall?

Instead of losing the scholarship spots, the NCAA allows college teams to carry those spots over into the 2021 cycle - as long as that program has that same number (or more) of early-enrollees from the class. Translation: if you carry over one spot from the 2020 class into the 2021 class, there needs to be at least one signee from the cycle who enrolls in college next January. That shouldn't be an issue for the Tigers, who signed eight early-enrollees this year.

If LSU keeps all three current scholarships and carries them into next year's cycle, the Tigers would be able to add those three to the 25-man limit and sign 28 recruits. If they carried just two spots into the 2021 cycle, they could add 27 recruits. If just one spot is available, then LSU would be allowed to ink 26 recruits.

While testing the transfer market and feeling out late qualifiers are both certainly in the cards, it won't be surprising if Orgeron elects to keep at least one scholarship spot from this year's class to use as part of the 2021 haul, which would give LSU even more room to add players in a year where Louisiana is deeper with top-end talent and the Tigers are carrying the title of reigning National Champions.
