Arik Gilbert's stunning commitment catches even LSU by surprise

BySTEVE WILTFONG 4 hours ago

As LSU was practicing on the field Wednesday night preparing for Saturday’s showdown in Baton Rouge against No. 9 Auburn, personnel guys started sprinting out of the building.

“Oh s***, the building is about to blow up,” one source thought.

Nope, just the nation’s No. 1 tight end Arik Gilbert — in fact, the highest-ranked tight end recruit ever at No. 10 in the 247Sports Composite — announcing an absolutely shocking commitment to LSU. The 247Sports Crystal Ball was trending Alabama for the last few weeks, favoring the Tide at 88 percent before Gilbert’s decision. Georgia figured to be the Tide’s biggest challenger down the stretch. All wrong.

Ed Orgeron and his staff pulled out another big win on the trail, with Gilbert now being the jewel of a class that ranks No. 3 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

Recent history says it’s typically Alabama stealing one or two a cycle from LSU: Patrick Surtain Jr., Landon Collins, Cam Robinson, Ishmael Sopsher last cycle. For the first time in a long time the shoe is on the other foot, and this is the Tigers’ biggest win over Alabama ever for a prospect not from the state of Louisiana.

There’s a different kind of juice about LSU right now. The offense is exciting with quarterback Joe Burrow setting the record for most touchdown passes in a single season in school history. The facility those personnel guys were racing out of to share the news is among the best in college football. Gilbert’s official visit was the weekend the Tigers beat a top-10 Florida team in primetime in front of one of the best atmospheres in college football.

All finalists were in the dark when Gilbert announced his college decision, donning a purple cap … while the rest of us waited for it to pull a bait-and-switch. His mom and sister remained in touch with the LSU staff leading up to the announcement, giving some hope they had a chance.

With that, LSU didn’t just land the top tight end in this 2020 recruiting class, they landed arguably the top pass catcher and certainly one of the best prospects in the country in Gilbert, winning another battle royale on the recruiting trail. One of the more physically impressive prospects in this class with NFL measurables, Gilbert is also one of the most polished regarding his craft. He is an instant impact player that should quickly emerge as one of the top tight ends in college football. His blend of size, speed, route running ability and, more than anything else terrific hands, make him unique. Gilbert adjusts to the football, isn’t fazed in traffic and adds after the catch ability. All of that adds up to him being the biggest mismatch from a receiver standpoint in this class.

LSU’s top four commits ended up in the fold in a bit of a surprise. Five-star cornerback Elias Ricks popped on Christmas when USC and Ohio State were the perceived early favorites. Top247 receiver Rakim Jarrett committed on April 27 when Tennessee looked like the one to beat. It only took one visit in April for another blue-chip receiver in Jermaine Burton to join the fold. Gilbert adds to what is now — arguably — the top receiving corps recruited among all 2020 classes.

What’s not up for argument is that this is the biggest surprise of the cycle, maybe even in year. It won’t be topped.

If the offensive side doesn't work out for him, he's an elite defensive end as well.

We have that side of the line taken care of, TE is his position. Over the years we have taken a number of players from the defensive side and moved them to OL. At one time 4 of the 5 OL at Virginia Tech were former TE’s. I agree, he would make a good DE, but TE’s like him, few and far between. He saw what we did with Moss as a TE, he sees what we are doing with the position. He has great hands, locates the ball, comes down with it. He’s a big athlete that can play the position. He can stretch the field. A mismatch against any defense. Very seldom I see a top player at a position that needs to move to the other side, Joe Barksdale, one of the top 5 DT’s coming out of high school, I said he would be better at the OT position. Days in camp, he was moved. Hines came in, DL, moved to the other side, now working the OC position. Stevens was moved around, once he settled at a position, he’s taken off. Agree, he’s that good.

Yes, LSU currently has 22 total commitments for the class of 2020 with needs at multiple positions but they do want another safety in this class.

Evaluation

Good frame with skill set to play safety with nickel ability. Comfortable in backpedal. Easily flips hips and runs with receiver. Instinctual and smart player. Physical in run game. Does not shy away from contact. Can disengage and set edge. Good open-field tackler. Has plus body control. Plays with quickness. Adding strength in upper body important. Concern about size to play consistently in box. Needs to be more consistent with jams and re-routing receiver. Multi-year starter at Top 20 program. Day 3 NFL draft potential.

Athletic Background

Malcolm Greene is a 5-10, 180-pound Safety from Highland Springs, VA.

Arik Gilbert

He is by far the highest rated TE ever on the 24/7 board. Never fear, we are still in the running for a number of top players. I like where this is headed this year. A number of players are on campus now. More to come.

Highlights: New LSU safety commit Malcolm Greene

ByBILLY EMBODY 12 minutes ago

2020 Highland Springs (Va.) safety Malcolm Greene committed to LSU after taking his official visit for the LSU-Florida game, giving the Tigers 23 commitments on board in the 2020 class already. Check out his midseason senior highlights above.

On the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, Greene ranks as the No. 310 overall prospect in the nation, coming in as the No. 26 safety nationally and No. 6 prospect in Virginia. On 247Sports, the four-star prospect ranks as the No. 246 overall recruit in the country, No. 23 safety in the nation and No 5 prospect out of Virginia.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball was all LSU when the 5-10, 180-pound prospect committed to Ed Orgeron & Co., but he held offers from the likes of Clemson, Duke, Michigan, North Carolina and plenty of others before deciding to commit. LSU was the only official visit that he has taken, up to this point.

In the 2020 recruiting class, Greene joins fellow East Coast prospect and four-star safety Jordan Toles at the position while Dallas area defensive back Lorando Johnson fits in at the nickel. At the cornerback spot, LSU has five-star cornerback Elias Ricks and four-star cornerback Major Burns pledged to the class already.

Here's a look at the 247Sports breakdown of Greene's ability from recruiting analyst Brian Dohn:

"Good frame with skill set to play safety with nickel ability. Day 3 NFL draft potential."

The LSU recruiting train continues to roll as class of 2020 safety Malcolm Greene‍ of Highland Springs VA. has committed to LSU.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Greene committed to LSU over  Clemson, Michigan, Duke Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame and others.

Greene took his official visit to LSU for the massive Florida-game weekend. In an interview with TigerBait.com earlier this fall he stated that he plans to sign in December but he’s not a midterm graduate.

LSU safeties coach Bill Busch is the Tigers coach responsible for getting Greene to Baton Rouge.

“He (Coach Busch) likes how explosive I am and he knows how I’m not afraid to get in there and make a tackle,” Green said. “I attack the ball at all times.”

Greene is considered a consensus four-star prospect across all recruiting networks.

This guy looks a bit undersized to play safety.  He won't grow up to be a LaRon Landry.  Then again, I thought Tyrann Mathieu was too small to be an NFL safety, I thought he would play corner.  Now, this kid will grow a little, he could play at 6' 200 or there about.

Has the role of safety evolved in the new spread offense world, to more of a pass defender than in the past, so you need a different type of player for the position?

Keep in mind that he could still be growing and might wind up in the 6'1" or 6'2" range.

ByBILLY EMBODY 9 hours ago

LSU landed a huge addition to the 2020 recruiting class with Marietta (Ga.) defensive end BJ Ojulari on Sunday and that four-star commitment moved the Tigers up to the No. 2 overall class in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings. Ed Orgeron & Co. moved up above Alabama and are now just behind Clemson.

That looks like a InbredGumps class.  It lacks a little star power at QB.  Maybe the staff thinks Brennan is the real deal, will have the job for two years, and we can try to attract a 5* signal caller next year to be ready to compete for the job when Miles B. graduates.  Of course, Johnson and Finley may turn out to be the real deal and develop into SEC starter level QBs.  Notably absent is a RB.  CEH is a junior, but he could leave after this year, and Curry has not played much this year, which does not look good for him.  If Clyde leaves, IMO we need 2 RB.  You might say Clyde should stay another year, but if he did, in this offense, would he have a better year?  If not, why not try to go pro after a spiffy looking junior campaign and not risk an injury next year?  We want the DT Guillory.  Running out of room.  I think InbredGumps's last class or 2, they only took one 3*, but sometimes your long snapper is a 3*.

O looks like he is doing what he is good at, recruiting.  I remember his first class was not so hot, but he took over mid year.  Some of those kids had a relationship with Les and were not happy that Les was gone.  O said nowadays, it takes a two or three year relationship with a kid for him to feel comfortable giving his commitment.  We're at the 3 year mark now.  And I am sure winning makes a difference, and running a slick offense.

This class is fluid, look for more movement. Staff are in on a number of  really top players. Now looking a couple need positions. Grades starting to come into play. Signing day is closing fast. O and the staff are moving players around. Some players are hurting themselves. Next couple weeks, let’s see who stays and who goes.

Talking about QB in your first few words, don't assume QB recruiting is done. Think next class 2021 😉

Honestly, don't assume anything. It's crazy right now.
