Ohio State transfer defensive back Sevyn Banks committed to LSU, he announced on Tuesday. Banks visited Baton Rouge earlier this spring to get a feel for Brian Kelly’s program. The school announced Banks as a signee shortly after.

Banks is a “Super Senior” and left Ohio State as a graduate. Missing the first two and last three games in 2021, he notched eight tackles, one tackle for loss and a pass breakup.

After leaving the program in December, Banks announced he was withdrawing from the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s been focused on finishing rehab from his injury that hampered him this fall.

“First and always, I give thanks to God for blessing me with amazing strength and tenacity through all things,” Banks said in a note posted to Twitter. “At this time, I am very grateful that my rehab is going great. To which, I will continue getting stronger by the day preparing for the 2022 NCAA football season and the 2023 NFL Draft.

NCAA: Over 40% of FBS transfer portal entries did not land at new school

This offseason, the transfer portalstayed active as players looked for new homes. According to new data from the NCAA, not all of them found what they were looking for.

Only 54% of FBS transfers wound up enrolling at a new school, the NCAA said Monday. About 5% of portal entrants withdrew their names and 41% either stayed in, enrolled at a non-NCAA school or left their sport.

In its data, the NCAA broke down the figures even further. More than 2,500 players wound up transferring while 1,798 portal entrants remain “active” in the portal from August 2020-July 2021. One year prior, 1,583 players put their names into the portal, which shows how much more active things are getting. The data also found 59% of players who entered ended up on scholarship at their next school.

What did you used to say about sometimes it's a good thing we lose certain players?

You got it. I also said, many times you lose a player for off the field actions, more than on the field play.

ALABAMA’S ELI RICKS WAS DRIVING A MERCEDES WHEN ARRESTED FOR SPEEDING AND MARIJUANA POSSESSION

Nice wheels.

When Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks was arrested Sunday afternoon near Laurel, Mississippi on charges of speeding and marijuana possession, he was driving a 2018 Mercedes Benz BTM, according to Jones County Justice Court and Mississippi Highway Patrol records.

Alabama coach Nick Saban owns Mercedes Benz dealerships.

Saban has had no comment on Ricks, who was released by signature bond with no fee Monday afternoon after spending Sunday night at the Jones County jail in Ellisville, Mississippi. He appeared in court on Monday and pled not guilty.

The Mercedes model that Ricks was driving is valued at more than $40,000.

Jones County Justice Court Judge C. Grant Hedgepeth on Monday set a court date for June 23 at 9 a.m. According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, which pulled Ricks over Sunday afternoon, Ricks was going 91 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 59 near Laurel headed north. Patrolmen spotted marijuana and found that he had no proof of insurance.

Ricks was arrested on misdemeanor charges of first time marijuana possession, speeding and driving with no proof of insurance.

“Rammer jammer in the slammer,” said the Laurel Leader Call newspaper headline on Tuesday.

Saban had a speaking engagement at his Legacy Awards ceremony in Birmingham, Alabama Monday night, but he was not asked about it during media interviews.

Brian Kelly compares LSU transfer portal management to NFL operation

Coming down south for the first time in his career, head coach Brian Kelly has taken some time to settle in with the LSU program. Even so, there has been a lot of roster turnover compared to last season, with Kelly having to hit the transfer portal hard to improve his roster for the upcoming season.

Kelly recently revealed how the Tigers navigate the transfer portal on a day-to-day basis, comparing the process to an NFL operation. He said LSU’s staff for player personnel is huge, especially when it comes to guys from Louisiana. If they left the state during their original recruitment but are looking to come back home, Kelly wants to make sure they have a good report on each of them.

“When you talk about how you set up your entire operation now, your player personnel department has grown exponentially,” Kelly said. “Will Redmond handles that but he now has a large staff that is working in different groups. It looks like an NFL operation now. We have one board that is just for LSU players that are at other Power Five players because if they transfer, we need to know about those guys from the state of Louisiana. So that’s a whole operation in itself, managing the transfer portal.

“As you know, we had to hit the transfer portal but it was incumbent of us to find those young men that wanted to come back to the state of Louisiana. We found six of them that were Power Five players and so when we saw that kind of, rallying back to their state, we said ‘we better be ready but if somebody wants to transfer, we better know all of the Division I players that are playing Power Five football that have a tie to Louisiana.”

NFL teams have always had player personnel departments, scouting other teams from around the league in case somebody becomes available. Kelly is now doing the same in Baton Rouge, knowing he has to be prepared in case somebody enters the transfer portal.

LSU has brought in 15 players via the transfer portal this offseason, with a few originally being from the state of Louisiana. Of course, recruiting the state has been a staple of the Tigers’ program over the years but there’s a new dynamic when it comes to today’s modern college football. Players will always be looking to come home when transferring.

Daran Branch becomes latest transfer addition to LSU

While he’s a walk-on, Branch is another in a huge line of transfers Brian Kelly’s staff added this offseason. The Tigers have multiple spots remaining on the roster as well, if the right transfer arises, thanks to the NCAA striking down the signing class limits.

Joining Branch as new members of the secondary include Oklahoma Statedefensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse, Ohio State defensive back Sevyn Banks, Arkansas transfers Joe Foucha and Greg Brooks, and Louisiana’s Mekhi Williams-Garner.

On top of a remade secondary, Missouridefensive lineman Mekhi Wingo, Virginia linebacker West Weeks and Oklahoma State linebacker Kolbe Fieldsjoin Matt House’s defense.

Penn State running back Noah Cain, Louisiana wideout Kyren Lacy, Florida International offensive lineman Miles Frazier, East Tennessee State offensive lineman Tre’Mond Shorts and Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels round out the offensive transfers.

Nice recap list LSUDad, thanks!  It will be interesting to see how many are contributors this year.  I suspect we'll see lots of them in the secondary.  If Shorts and Frazier beat out our existing scholarship players, that would not speak too well to our o-line recruiting the last few years.

LSU fifth-year defensive end Soni Fonua entered the NCAA transfer portal Thursday afternoon. The senior put together a solid stretch of games towards the end of the 2021-22 season, starting the Tigers final five games of the year.

Fonua came to LSU as a transfer from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College in 2019, appearing in 20 games for the Tigers over a three-year span.

The LSU defensive line saw a number of players go down to injury last season and Fonua certainly picked up the slack when they needed him most. Recording 27 tackles and 6.5 tackles for a loss, Fonua really stood out against Texas A&M last season.

LSU Tigers linebacker Antoine Sampah is entering the NCAA transfer portal, the SEC program confirmed on Monday. A former four-star recruit, Sampah has battled injuries since his days in high school and did not make an appearance for LSU last season.

Head coach Brian Kelly says Sampah has been medically cleared and can play football. However, the plan is to find a new school and give a fresh breath of air to his career.

Sampah appeared in four games as a true freshman, locking down a redshirt spot. He was not able to record any statistics and will leave Baton Rouge without playing significant snaps for the Tigers.

FYI:

Per a report from the Dallas Morning News, SMU is now going to be shorthanded for the remainder of the season.

According to reporter Joseph Hoyt, multiple Mustangs will refuse to play the rest of the season to take advantage of what is a newer redshirt rule in college football.

Those same players will preserve a year of eligibility by not playing in another game. Per the report, they will then opt to transfer after the season.

Previously, any player who appeared in a college football game had used his eligibility for that season. but in 2018 the NCAA changed the rule to allow players who appeared in 4 games or less to take advantage of a redshirt year.
