The LSU football program has received one of the biggest commitments for the class of 2023 as running back Trey Holly‍ of Farmerville (La.) Union Parish has announced his pledge to the Tigers.

The 5-foot-8, 180-pound Holly committed to LSU over offers from Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas A&M, Florida State and many others.

The four-star running back finished his junior season with 2,633 yards and 33 touchdowns.  LSU now has five commitments for the class of 2023 with Holly’s decision.

Watch his tape, they have him as a 4* player, he shouldn’t stay there long. He’s as good a RB as I’ve seen in a long time. His field vision, watching blocks setup, hitting the hole, can catch the ball out of the backfield, too many things to like.

CEH 2.0?

Or Dalton or Faulk, anyone of the three. He’s a little of his own style. But look at his tape, I like his style, too much of the good stuff. A true Freshman that can come in and get playing time from the start.

News: Tigers Land 2023 Wide Receiver Kyle Parker

Parker becomes sixth commit in 2023 class, provides versatility at the receiver position

The Tigers gained a huge piece to their 2023 recruiting class with three-star wide receiver Kyle Parker announcing his commitment Thursday afternoon. The Texas native has been on quite the recruiting tour over the last few weeks, ultimately feeling at home with the Tigers.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound speedster chose LSU over Texas, Louisville and Oklahoma State, among others. Parker officially visited all four schools this summer with his desired commitment date coming before his senior season.

With family in the New Orleans area, this helped the Tigers significantly in the recruitment process, wanting to be closer to them and giving a chance for his family to attend home games at LSU.

Parker finished the 2021 season with 48 receptions for 775 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also added 403 yards as a punt return specialist with two touchdowns and averaged 30.8 yards per kick return.

Throughout his high school career, Parker has shown his versatility on the football field. The ability to make something out of nothing on a screen pass or go up and become a deep-ball threat is what intrigued the Tigers. Parker’s physicality is a piece of his game that will go a long way at the collegiate level.

Parker is the sixth commit in the Tigers 2023 class and the first wide receiver to announce his pledge. With the recruitment process shut down, Parker now has the chance to maximize his senior year and prepare his body for college.

The Tigers are set to continue adding to their recruiting class with a number of targets set to make their college announcement in the coming weeks. It’s been a busy month of June for this staff with results beginning to unfold.

LSU football recruiting: Four-star EDGE Jaxon Howard commits to Tigers on CBS Sports HQ

3h ago1 min read
clear.gif

LSU picked up some momentum on the recruiting trail on Friday evening when four-star edge rusher Jaxon Howard chose the Tigers over a group of finalists that included Miami, Michigan and Minnesota live on CBS Sports HQ.

As the top-rated commit in LSU's 2023 recruiting class, Howard provides an immediate boost in the recruiting rankings for a Tigers class that started the day at No. 48 in the country and No. 8 in the SEC.

As a prospect, Howard ranks No. 96 overall in the 247Sports Composite and checks in as the No. 11 edge rusher in the 2023 class. The Minneapolis native also ranks as the top prospect in the state, giving Brian Kelly a notable recruiting win against the likes of Michigan and Minnesota in the Big Ten footprint. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Howard is a multi-sport athlete who also plays baseball and participates on the track team throwing the shot put and discus. 247Sports' recruiting analyst Allen Trieu writes that Howard "has an ideal frame" for the defensive line and "looks physically ready to compete early in his career." More from his scouting report:

Has been recruited as both a tight end and defensive lineman and has played both positions at the high school level. As his body continues to grow and develop, we are leaning more towards defense in college. He has an ideal frame for that position. He has filled in and looks physically ready to compete early in his career. He shows some twitch and ability to get off the ball on defense and pursues hard. On offense, he is a good route runner and can make a little happen after the catch also. As it stands, we believe he is a Power Five prospect at either position, but he may be more of a rarer specimen on defense. We believe he can be a combo inside-outside player on the defensive line.

Even the short time that Brian Kelly has been LSU's head coach should let us know that this is just the beginning of the Tigers continuing to improve the quantity and quality of their 2023 recruiting class. The transition from Ed Orgeron from Kelly included a significant amount of turnover on the roster, but the LSU staff closed strong on the trail and worked the transfer portal to finish the 2022 cycle ranked No. 12 in the country and No. 3 in the SEC.

BREAKING: Four-star DE Jaxon Howard commits to LSU

By Mike Scarborough
July 1, 2022

LSU head football coach Brian Kelly and Tigers defensive line coach Jamar Cain have their first defensive lineman for the class of 2023 on board,

Four-star defensive end Jaxon Howard‍ of Minneapolis (MN) Robbinsdale Cooper has announced he’s committed to LSU.

“I will be committed to LSU,” Howard announced on CBS HQ.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound edge rusher chose LSU over Miami, Michigan and home-state Minnesota.  He’s rated as the No.1 prospect over all from the North Star State.

This spring and early summer he made several visits to LSU.  He was on campus for the Tigers spring football game and then returned last month for an official visit.

Howard pointed out his relationship with Cain as a big factor in his decision to choose LSU.

“Over the years I have had a great relationship with Coach Cain the defensive line coach and also the other coaches and support staff,” Howard said. “I had met coach Kelly when I went to Notre Dame last summer and it’s been an amazing experience getting to know him.”

Howard is listed by many as a tight end and he could absolutely play that position at the next level but he’s been recruited to LSU as a defensive end.

With Howard’s commitment, LSU now has seven commitments for the class of 2023.  Howard’s father Willie Howard was drafted out of Stanford by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Recently 3 of La.'s top 10 recruits have committed out of state.  QB Manning to Texas, 5* safety Derek Williams to Texas, and QB Eli Holstein to Gumps.  It's been a long time since LSU lost 3 of the top 10 recruits in state.  To an extent, Manning and Holstein are understandable, both are QB's and LSU signed 5* Walker Howard last year and Garrett Nussmier is a soph.  But Williams at safety, there is no excuse for LSU to lose him; we have safties but several came in from the portal and are upper classmen.  Unless Texas smooth outbid us.  Now every year a kid in La. just wants to play out of state.  Maybe that is it.  But Kelly said a reason to come to LSU was because of the recruiting base in state.  He needs to get the next 6 of the top ten (RB Holly has committed already).

I'm not worried yet.  Kelly did not have the last 2 or 3 years to develop relationships with these players.  Will La. have the NIL money to compete with aTm and Gumps, or Georgia, and Texas is coming into the SEC.

Defense wins championships. At least, the Tigers will certainly hope that’s true.

LSU has now landed two four-star edge rushers in the past two days in Jaxon Howard and now Joshua Mickens, who announced his commitment on Sunday. Mickens is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound edge rusher from Indianapolis, where he plays for Lawrence Central.

According to On3, Mickens is a top-50 player in the country. He becomes the eighth commit of the 2023 class for LSU and the second edge rusher. He’s rated as the No. 2 prospect in the state of Indiana and the No. 164 player in the country.

Coach Brian Kelly is known for building great recruiting classes and he is well on his way as he already has eight four-stars committed for 2023. The Tigers’ class now ranks 37th nationally with the addition of Mickens, so there is still a lot of work to do between now and signing day.

SI on 4 star CB Christian Gray out of St. Louis:

Quote

LSU - The Tigers weren't considered much of a contender for Gray early in the process, but that changed when Robert Steeples was hired as the new corners coach. Steeples used to be the head coach at DeSmet, and his previous relationship with Gray became a very important aspect to this recruitment. LSU was considered the leader following Gray's April visit to campus, and he also visited for an official from June 3-5. LSU is considered the top contender at this point.

2 other players that have LSU at or near the top of their list that are announcing today are Ashton Stamps (CB out of Rummel) and DE Dashawn Womack (DE out of St. Francis Academy in Baltimore).

Womack is considered 95%+ likely to sign with LSU.

Jamar Cain has been putting in the hours!

Interesting discussion.

I think it's too early to hit the panic button.

The way I look at it is that the relationships the new LSU staff has established over the last couple of years are with recruits primarily outside of Louisiana with an emphasis on Midwestern kids. The kids committing to LSU right now are kids that had ND, Oklahoma, and others near the top of their lists up until Kelly was hired and pulled his staff in. Once those assistants came to LSU, these players came for a look-see and are following the guys they wanted to mentor under.

This is no different from when Saban and Miles came in and pulled kids from elsewhere while they fortified the so-called 'fence around Louisiana'. Much of Orgeron's success in Louisiana is due to the fact that he had been here building relationships, so there was no dropoff from Miles.

Saban pulled in recruits like Whitworth and others in his 1st couple of years. It took him a couple of years to build the relationships in Louisiana (some of which he has kept over the years). Kelly will need a little time to establish and solidify those relationships.

NIL adds another factor. Any LSU coach will get the players that dreamed of growing up to play in Death Valley. The ones we're "losing" are kids who are going for the money instead of fulfilling their dreams. IMHO, these are kids that have their priorities misplaced in the early period of the NIL era. Some might just go play for another school for a year or two, take the NIL money, and come back in the portal.  Others we might not want/need in the long run.

I'm liking the guys Cain is hauling in. Historically, LSU always had great linemen.  Nice to see that emphasis back.

Number of LSU Targets Making July 4th College Announcement

High-priority targets making commitment Monday, Tigers look to continue string of prospects choosing LSU
BY ZACK NAGY

The Tigers are on pace for a tremendous week on the recruiting trail with a number of recruits set to make their college announcements. Head coach Brian Kelly and his staff certainly put in the work during June, hosting an abundance of prospects to campus, but now is time to see that work pay off.

On Monday, three LSU targets will be making their college announcements and the Tigers feel they are definitely in the mix. Even landing two of the three prospects would elevate this 2023 class to the next level as things begin taking shape.

Here’s a look at who is set to make their decision July 4th:

This is something I wondered about, would BK emphasize "character".  There is some evidence of it, Mickens carries a 3.8 average in high school.

From Dandy Don today:

Quote

With Mickens’ pledge, LSU’s 2023 class currently contains eight commitments and continues to climb in the recruiting rankings. The Tigers are now No. 37 in 247Sports’s composite team rankings and No. 9 in similar rankings by on3.com. The huge disparity in the rankings shows just how subjective this ranking stuff is, but two things seem clear: The Tigers are on a roll right now and don’t appear to be slowing down any time soon, and the players Brian Kelly and staff are targeting seem to be high character kids.

Jamar Cain has kicked some ass on the recruiting trail!  I think Kelly had a relationship with some of those kids up north.  Hey, that's OK.

A comment from Darron Reed who just committed:

“I liked the hospitality. I felt at home when I was down there,” Reed told The Bengal Tiger. “Coaches showed me a great time and I had a great time all over. They showed me the mechanical engineering program, we talked ball and chopped it. I liked how (engineering) was hands on. They got a race car team that they build one and then race so it’s a lot of hands on stuff.

“I had great relationship with the players when we went out. We talked about football and I just hung with them like I was one of them.”

On3.com has Darron Reed ranked as the nation’s No. 29 overall prospect, No. 4 defensive lineman and No. 2 prospect in Georgia. According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Reed ranks as the No. 170 overall prospect, No. 22 defensive lineman and No. 16 prospect in Georgia.

There's more on the link.

He talks academics, mechanical eng. is not easy so the guy has to be pretty smart.

DB from Rummel Ashton Stamps commits to LSU!

Ashton Stamps has been one of the offseason standouts as he turned heads at SEC campuses all over this summer. That includes the coaches up the road at LSU.

After camping in Baton Rouge and securing an offer last month, Stamps committed to the in-state Tigers on July 4. The three-star Metairie (La.) Rummel defensive back who checked in at 6-foot-1 and 183 pounds with a 4.5 40 at camp in June quickly shot up LSU’s board this summer as the staff turned up the heat on the New Orleans standout.

“It came pretty easy to me,” Stamps told On3. “It’s close to home and I always wanted to play at LSU. It’s a great school.”

Wow, a lot happened around the 4th!
